Clearing Smart TV memory: how to solve the problem and what is its cause

Every year, smart TVs conquer more and more users. Undoubtedly, they have many advantages compared to standard ones: recording and playing only the content that interests you, the ability not to limit yourself only to movies, but also access to YouTube, social networks, full-fledged work with the browser and much more.

An additional advantage was the ability to connect additional equipment such as a keyboard and mouse. But even perfection has its flaws. Recently, many people have begun to face the problem of lack of memory. What to do with it and where it comes from – we’ll look at it in this article.

Causes of a memory full error

The problem is that when you next want to use the built-in browser, an error occurs: it is impossible to watch videos or listen to music online due to insufficient memory.

TV browsers have limited capabilities, so when you watch, for example, a video, it is initially loaded into the device’s memory, and only then can it be played. Then the memory is cleared, but, unfortunately, it does not always have time to free up the required amount, which causes the problem of its overflow. As long as it is not refilled, everything will function as it should; therefore, the movie can play up to half, and only then an error will appear.

Sometimes it may be preceded by the message on the screen “ the application will be restarted to free up memory ”, then the application or site crashes and reloads again, this can repeat several times in a row.

That is, the basis of the disadvantage is the unforeseenly small amount of initially built-in memory.

Sequence of actions to clear the memory of an LG TV

Smart TVs from LG are based on the WebOS operating system, which is based on the Linux kernel. And there is no function built into the OS to quickly delete the cache of all applications. If an error like “Insufficient memory” occurs, it is recommended to reset the software to factory settings. Before clearing the memory and deleting the cache on an LG TV, it is recommended to create and activate an online user account (for this you need to register with email confirmation). Then the basic application settings will be copied “to the cloud” and this data can be restored after resetting the TV to factory settings (passwords for applications, Desktop settings, list of saved playlists).

Reset is performed as follows:

  • Press “Home” or “Menu” on the remote control (depending on the installed version of WebOS);
  • go to the “Settings” section;
  • select “Advanced settings” and select “General” in the subcategory;
  • activate the item “Reset to factory settings”;
  • enter your account password (or factory reset password, default: 12345678);
  • Confirm the operation and wait for the device to reboot.

Sometimes when trying to reset, error E561 occurs. This means that a WebOS update is available for this model. First you will need to perform an Update and only then reset the settings to factory settings.

You can also use a solution such as clearing the browser cache on an LG TV: this functionality is provided by the manufacturer and allows you to free up 1–2 gigabytes of data. The settings of other applications are not affected. Before clearing the browser cache on your LG TV, you should bookmark frequently used pages. Next you need to do:

  • press “Menu” or “Home” on the remote control, go to “Settings”;
  • open the “Network Settings” category;
  • select the item “Clear Internet data storage”, sometimes after selecting the display asks you to enter a password - you need to confirm it.

At the same time, Cookies are also deleted from the browser, so when accessing some sites you will need to manually enter your login/password (auto-login is deactivated when cleared).

Memory Features

  1. Without its presence, downloading any information would have been impossible, but the manufacturers made a slight mistake with the quantitative characteristics.
  2. Self-cleaning (if loading content is slower than clearing the memory on the TV, then the error will not pop up)
  3. It cannot be increased by installing or using an additional one using a hard drive/flash drive, as on a PC.
  4. When viewing regular channels, the error does not occur, only when using Internet resources.
  5. The error has no connection to specific applications, pages, or sites.

Uninstalling apps

If, after clearing the cache, there is still not enough space for web browsers to work stably, then you should remove some applications. Some important programs are built into the TV system and cannot be removed, but those installed by the user can be removed. To do this, you need:

  • Enter the smart TV mode by pressing the Smart/Home button on the remote control.
  • At the bottom there will be a line with different applications. You can switch between them using the buttons on the remote control. The icon for the selected program increases slightly in size.
  • After selecting the application, hold down the “OK” button on the remote control. A cross will appear above the application icon.
  • Use the up arrow to move to this cross, then a face icon will appear at the top.
  • Press “OK” again, then a menu will appear with the words “Delete” and “Cancel”.
  • Using the same buttons on the remote control, click on “Delete” and confirm deletion.

Ways to solve the problem

  • First of all, you can try to update the software, due to the possibility that the new version has more correct memory allocation than the old one.
  • You can install special applications and watch videos with them, or install applications that will help clear memory faster or reduce loading speed.
  • Reset the settings to factory settings, there are several schemes:

Sequence of actions for LG TV:

Press the “Home” button -> go to “Settings” -> go to “Advanced settings” -> go to “General settings” -> find “Reset to factory settings” -> confirm the action.

Sequence of actions for Samsung TV:

Turn off the TV -> press the Info, Menu, Mute, Power buttons simultaneously and in exactly this sequence -> press the Mute, 1, 8, 2, Power buttons also simultaneously, without changing the sequence -> the TV will boot into service mode -> go to “ Settings" -> press the "Reset" button (Smart Hub settings will be reset as well, or they can be reset separately) -> confirm the action.

You can insert a flash drive into the TV, the cache from the browser will be written to it, this method does not help everyone, however, it’s worth a try.

Contact the support service, a specialist, thanks to remote access, will change the firmware to a newer one, reset the settings to factory settings on their own, or try to find the essence of the problem and fix it in another way, you will only need to confirm remote access.

How to avoid memory overflow

To prevent the internal memory of the TV from becoming clogged, it is necessary to promptly clear the cache of information garbage after each viewing of web pages through a browser.

You can install additional software that can reduce the load on the OS and thus avoid memory overflow.

When viewing an Internet browser, you should go to those sites where all data is stored in blocks. In this case, the cache will not become clogged with unnecessary information.

Another option is to update Web OS, as this will eliminate possible system failures.

It may also help to reset the TV to factory settings, first updating the operating system to the latest version. This will remove all “junk” applications.

Freeing up the built-in memory of Samsung SMART TVs

You can free up the internal memory of Samsung SmartTV receivers by performing simple operations such as deleting unused applications and clearing the built-in browser cache. If these actions do not lead to a positive result, then the TV owner will have to contact the Samsung Unified Support Service or, at his own risk, try to reset the TV settings to factory settings.

Uninstalling unused apps

Removing unused or unnecessary applications is one of the effective ways to free up the internal memory of your TV. To do this, you will need:

  1. log in to the SmartTV home page;
  2. open the applications menu (APPS panel);
  3. go to settings (icon in one of the upper corners);
  4. in the window that opens, find unnecessary (extra) applications and sequentially click on each of them, pressing the “Delete” button;
  5. Confirm your actions and close the window.

You can get a similar result if you reset all Smart Hub settings. This will remove all downloaded applications and resolve any errors. This will reboot and install all factory applications automatically.

Attention! Resetting Smart Hub settings can only be performed on TV receivers certified for use in Russia. Their code (indicated on the nameplate) ends in “XRU”, and also has the designation “EAC”. Uncertified television panels may become blocked after this operation.

Resetting Smart Hub settings can be done through the “Settings” menu, following the route “Support -> Self-diagnosis -> Reset Smart Hub”. There you will need to enter the security PIN code “0000” (default) in the appropriate line. After the “Reset complete” message appears, you need to go to the APPS panel, wait for the initial setup notification and, following the prompts on the TV receiver screen, enter the menu. There you will need to select the applications you need to use and press the “Finish” button.

In the case where resetting the Smart Hub parameters to the factory state did not lead to a positive result, you can carry out a similar procedure for the entire TV. How to do this is shown in detail in the video:

At the same time, on all Samsung SMART TV receivers (series 4, 5, 6, 7, etc.) the settings are reset in the same way. The only possible difference is a slight difference in the names of the menu items.

Clearing the built-in browser cache

You can free up your TV's internal memory by clearing the built-in browser cache. They do this as follows:

  • go to the main menu of Smart-TV;
  • launch the browser;
  • open the “Settings” menu;
  • in the “Delete history” section find the “Cache” item;
  • Click “Delete now” to confirm the action.

The cache clearing process may take a few minutes before video viewing should resume.

Contacting Samsung Electronics Unified Support Service

The unified Samsung Electronics support service has been operating in Russia since 1994. The remote service, thanks to which owners of television equipment of this brand, without leaving home, receive not only qualified advice, but also prompt technical support, has allowed the company to significantly increase public confidence in its products. By calling the hotline 88005555555 or leaving a corresponding message on the website www.samsung.com (Online Live Chat), the owner of the TV can notify the operator about the problem.

Important! Technical support service specialists, taking advantage of the unique proprietary Remote Management technology, will remotely update the device’s firmware or expertly reset its settings to factory settings.

To provide service specialists with remote access to your TV receiver, you must:

  • open the TV menu;
  • enter the “Support” section;
  • select “Remote control”;
  • provide the security PIN code to the service specialist.

In this case, the work is carried out online, and the service operator sees on the screen of his device only what is displayed on the faulty TV receiver. You should know that the company guarantees complete security of data that can be stored on the TV.

TV capabilities

Using LG Smart TV, the user can open pages on the Internet, just like on a smartphone, laptop or desktop PC, using the browser built into the TV. “Surfing” the Internet using a remote control is not very convenient, although it is possible to purchase a keyboard for this purpose. But managing built-in Internet services using the remote control is very convenient, because they open instantly.

The range of these services available on smart TV depends on the country of residence of the owner and on the firmware version of the software. Usually this is Skype, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, various TV channels. There is also access to multimedia resources.

How to clear cache on Philips smart TVs

All Philips TVs released after 2014 come with the Android TV operating system. It has a built-in function to delete the cache of all installed applications (including the system one) in a couple of clicks. To do this you need:

  • open settings and select “Storage” (in some models the menu item is called “Storage” or “Memory”);
  • click on the bar indicating the amount of free memory;
  • select "Clear data storage".

It also immediately displays exactly how much memory was freed. Philips installed WebOS until 2013 inclusive. In them, before clearing the application cache, the TV requires updating the software to version 2.0 and higher (available for all models). The required function is located in “Network settings” (select “Clear network data”).
