Stripes on the computer and laptop monitor screen: horizontal and vertical

Hi all! I’ll warn you right away that many sites contain outright nonsense and nonsense on this issue. I encountered this problem twice: once with a friend’s laptop. The second time the stripes appeared was due to my video card. The problem can occur in three cases and has slightly different symptoms:

  • Video card - most often associated with video cards released after 2010.
  • Monitor - due to normal breakdown or due to impact.
  • The loop most often occurs on laptops. On desktop computers, the problem may be due to a faulty cable.
  • Problem with the port on the video card.

In addition to vertical or horizontal stripes, squares, stripes and other artifacts, you may notice another symptom - the operating system has stopped loading. But you can still log in in safe mode. First, I will tell you how to identify the culprit, and then what you need to do. You can also describe your cases in the comments, and I will try to help you.

Difficulty of diagnosis

Diagnosing such a problem on a laptop is much more difficult than on a regular computer. This is due, first of all, to the design features of laptops and their more complex structure.

Stripes on a laptop screen can be horizontal, vertical, black, white or colored, and the reasons for their appearance usually lie in problems with the latter’s hardware devices.

Vertical stripes.

Horizontal.

You can also see ripples on the screen, skewed images, mirror color rendition (black - gray, red - green, etc.), displaying the image as a negative.

Ripples in areas of the screen.

Correcting a bad connection

A line appeared on the LCD screen when you turned it on and does not disappear when the screen is automatically adjusted? Such a defect occurs due to various types of damage:

  • shocks during transportation or installation of the device;
  • penetration of moisture into the TV or monitor (for example, during wet cleaning or when operating in a climate with high humidity);
  • errors in the factory assembly.

If the assembly order is violated, a yellow or green stripe appears in the first days of operation. Late manifestation indicates careless use of the equipment.

Disconnect the contacts and look for any noticeable irregularities: kinks in the wire, greenish deposits, melted elements. If everything is in order, reconnect the cable: perhaps a vertical stripe has appeared on the monitor due to a slight looseness of the connection.

Reasons for stripes appearing on a laptop screen

Let's look at the reasons for this phenomenon:

  • 1. The simplest reason in this situation is overheating of the video card.

For example, this situation happened with the Dell M5110 laptop. In the lower part, in the area of the discrete video card (there are two of them), it got so hot that the leatherette on which it stood began to melt and stick to it.

As a result, the periodic appearance of colored stripes and ripples on the screen. The problem was partially solved by purchasing a stand with laptop coolers. Stripes appear, but very rarely.

  • 2. Complete failure of the video card.

As a rule, the main reason for such a breakdown is also overheating or hardware failure. The power supply copes well with surges in the power supply, so this reason is unlikely.

In such a situation, either stripes appear on the screen even when the OS is loading, or the laptop does not start at all.

This problem can be solved by repairing or upgrading the video card. This is not easy to do on a laptop; you need to have the skills of at least a novice electronics engineer. But we will talk about these points further.

  • 3. The system board has failed.

The situation is the same as point 2; diagnosing the problem is difficult, but possible. We will talk about this further.

  • 4. The cable has failed.

From the motherboard to the matrix there is a special cable through which the signal is transmitted.

Poor contact at the connection point, burnout or fracture of the cable can cause interruptions in signal transmission to the matrix, hence the appearance of stripes.

  • 5. Problems with the matrix, its failure.

The situation is critical, there is only one way out, the matrix requires replacement.

In this situation, it is a rare case when reinstalling or updating the video card drivers helps, and hoping that this will help is not worth it, it is indeed a rare case.

Possible types of stripes and breakdowns.

Horizontal and vertical stripes on the TV screen occur due to software glitches, internal and external breakdowns. It is worth paying attention to the color and the number of defects in order to understand what the error may be.

Thin horizontal stripe.

It is worth paying attention to the frame scan, which gets lost after sudden voltage surges, for example, during a thunderstorm or power outage. As a result of the same problems, microcracks may appear on microcircuits.

Green vertical defects.

Such breakdowns indicate damage to the cable connecting the image forming board and the LCD matrix. Such a line can be anything: from a wide line of several centimeters to a narrow line of 1-3 pixels.

Interesting fact. If the strip appears suddenly after the TV has been running for a long time, turn off the equipment and let it cool. Often, along with overheating, the defect also goes away.

Red or yellow vertical stripe.

Failure of the matrix daisy chain connection often produces red stripes. They also indicate that the cable connectors are damaged or dusty. It is not uncommon for a track on the board to peel off or the VGA cable to become damaged. Some of these defects can be repaired at home.

Vertical yellow lines are a sign of problems with the video card. And also after moisture gets on the TV, as a result of which the contacts swell and oxidize.

Important! Despite the availability of a large number of instructions on how to independently solder cables or repair microcircuits, you should not do this without special education. The exception is that you already want to buy new equipment, but left this one for personal experiments.

Multi-colored horizontal.

When horizontal stripes of different shades, as well as streaks or ripples appear on the TV screen, there is a high probability that the contact cable has become disconnected from the matrix. In this case, it should be re-soldered.

Often the problem is caused by a broken motherboard. This usually happens when the performance of the image control unit deteriorates.

Black vertical and horizontal stripes on the TV screen.

Such stripes are often located on different sides of the screen, sometimes in its center. This is one of the most problematic breakdowns, requiring serious costs, since the cause in most cases is damage to the decoder. In this case, a complete replacement of the matrix will be required.

If urgent measures are not taken, the lines will expand and the screen will stop lighting. We will have to invest even more money to restore its functionality.

Thin vertical stripes on the monitor.

The reason for the appearance of vertical stripes on the TV screen that do not light up at all may be a breakdown of the decoder or matrix columns. This occurs, for example, as a result of a lightning strike or sudden power surges. If timely measures are not taken, the stripe will expand and eventually completely cover the screen.

Vertical pink.

Most often, color stripes on the screen appear as a result of damage to the monitor matrix. Failure may occur due to a failure of the power supply system, impact or other similar influences.

The reason may also be normal wear and tear of the elements: if a vertical stripe of pink color (less often purple) appears on the monitor, the reason for this is most often a breakdown of the scaler. Sometimes such a defect is present even in new TVs, but here the cause, as a rule, is a manufacturing defect - in this case, the TV should be immediately returned to the store under warranty.

A vertical white (light) stripe on the TV screen.

It can be barely noticeable and flickering or, conversely, clearly defined. The appearance of such stripes - as well as stripes of any other shades - primarily indicates a problem with the matrix.

You can check the correctness of this assumption in the following way: press, move (without much effort) or otherwise gently influence this element. If the line disappears and reappears on the screen, the part is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Vertical blue

Most often, such stripes occur when the video card is overheated or worn out. If the warranty period has not expired, the best option is to replace the element.

Another reason for the appearance of vertical blue (cyan) stripes may be a broken matrix cable contact.

Another reason is that as a result of overheating, the solder balls of the video processor peeled off from the BGA substrate.

Diagnosing problems

The most important task in all this is to correctly diagnose the cause of the problem.

A complete diagnosis of the reasons for the appearance of stripes on a laptop screen can only be carried out in service centers using special equipment.

But initial diagnosis, which can also tell us a lot, is also possible at home.

Using an additional monitor

An additional monitor can be connected to a laptop via a VGA .

There can be two results:

  1. Everything will be displayed normally on the additional monitor;
  2. Similar bars will appear as on the laptop screen.

The result of step 1 tells us that the laptop’s video card is working, problems should be looked for in the matrix and cable of the laptop.

Result 2 tells us that there are problems with the motherboard and video card. In both cases, repairs are inevitable.

How to repair a damaged cable

The problem is that a failed cable almost always entails the need to replace the screen matrix. And its price is comparable to the cost of the entire TV.

LCD, LED and plasma

This is a preventive measure and rarely works in removing any existing lines on the screen.
The first step in troubleshooting is to determine the extent of the damage. For external monitors or TVs, reinstall all video input cables or consider replacing the cables with new ones. If the lines continue to appear, this indicates an internal failure, something few consumers can fix on their own. Instructions for individual products for demoing a monitor, laptop or TV to replace broken parts exist online, but the most recommended course of action is sending it to the manufacturer for warranty repairs. If you have determined for sure that the cable is the culprit of the trouble, and there is no money for repairs at the service center or this cannot be done for other reasons, you can try your luck yourself. You will need a steady hand, accuracy and a strong magnifying device. This could be a school microscope or special glasses with a magnifying lens or magnifying glass.

If there is no warranty for a device, consumers are advised to replace the device with a completely new one, as this is usually the cheapest solution. Antennas have one thing in common: they are constantly exposed to various radio signals that can interfere. This is usually a good thing, but can cause significant problems.

If stripes suddenly appear on a television picture and the conversation on a mobile phone is unlikely to be understood, the devices should not be repaired immediately. Digital devices that communicate through interference may experience errors. The result, however, is often much slower data transfer.

Method 1

We find a problematic track with unstable contact, carefully and patiently pierce it in several places with a sharp needle and pour conductive varnish into the holes (it is sold in radio stores and radio markets). After the contact has been restored and the varnish has dried sufficiently, we seal the repair areas with a piece of transparent tape.

Mobile phone sometimes disturbs television

The reasons for such violations are varied.
However, the fault could also be a faulty distribution network in the neighborhood, an unauthorized radio service, or a faulty transmitting station. Electronic appliances such as hair dryers, washing machines, and refrigerators and freezers can also disrupt the power supply. Then suddenly it suddenly stops working. Damaged motors in vacuum cleaners, blowers and faucets are another possible source of error, says Ohland. Method 2

We use it if the first method turned out to be ineffective. Helping ourselves with warm air from a hairdryer, we disconnect the problematic cable. Using acetone, remove the old anisotropic film from the cable. We clean oxidized contacts with a sharp object, such as a scalpel.

We apply liquid rosin to the soldering areas, accurately install the cable in place and fix it. Use a soldering iron to slightly warm up the cable, preparing it for soldering, and then solder the contacts. We make sure that the solder flows correctly and evenly along the tracks, without forming jumpers between them.

Tips and tricks for networking from a socket. Problems persist, for example, most often with the help of smartphones or routers that are used. And some devices are even interfering so massively that the Federal Network Agency is warning about it. These include, for example, cameras that use radio frequencies to fly. They may cause serious disruption, but will be sold in Germany by some dealers, albeit with the warning stamp "For Export Only".

Getting to the source of the concern often requires a little detective work. Changing coaxial cables as well as old antenna connectors and distributors can also be done relatively easily and inexpensively. Even in standby mode, devices often create a radio connection that can cause interference.

When do you need to change the laptop matrix?

We replace the laptop matrix in cases:

  • Provided that a parallel connected monitor is working. If, when the matrix is deformed in the horizontal and vertical planes and its surface is pressed inward, the color rendition of the stripes changes, the stripes disappear and reappear.
  • The presence of stripes is observed at all stages of computer boot - BIOS, WINDOWS.
  • Ripples appeared on the screen, wide white or multi-colored stripes were visible.

  • The matrix displays the image in negative or the colors are being substituted, for example, it should be red, but green is displayed, blue is yellow, black is light gray, etc.

Video card or motherboard needs repair

If there are multi-colored lines on the screen, horizontal or vertical, usually dispersed across the entire screen, and on an external monitor the same picture:

Ripples all over the screen, but replacing the matrix or cable does not lead to a positive result

Visually, it is almost impossible to determine that it is the video card that is failing; only another monitor will help here 100%.

Checking the cable

  • The cable is flexible and this is understandable, because the laptop screen cannot be in the “stowed” position all the time, and this is not a computer. Deformation of the cable occurs constantly, and therefore the probability of its failure is high.
  • Slowly opening and quickly closing the lid and vice versa, observe how the strips “behave.” Any changes on the monitor screen indicate that the source of the problem is the cable.

Software problems

Reason 1: missing video card drivers

If you just reinstalled Windows or updated your video card drivers, but then encountered vertical stripes on your monitor screen, you can assume there are problems with the drivers.

To solve this problem, you will need to install fresh video card drivers. First of all, open the Control Panel

and go to the
"System"
.

In the left pane of the window, click on “Device Manager”

.

Expand the "Video Adapters"

.
If the name “VGA adapter” or the name of your video card appears next to it, but with a yellow exclamation mark, this indicates that the drivers are not working. If the drivers have been installed, right-click on the graphics adapter and select “Uninstall”
.

A confirmation window will appear on the screen, where you will need to check the box next to “Remove driver programs for this device”

.

Once the removal is completed successfully, you will need to restart your computer. From this moment, you can start downloading and installing the latest version of video card drivers (if you haven’t worked with video card drivers at all after installing Windows, you will immediately need to proceed to downloading them, without the preliminary removal procedure described above). You can download video card drivers from the official website of the manufacturer of your graphics adapter (specifically for your model). If you are the owner of a laptop, then the graphics drivers will be downloaded from the laptop manufacturer’s website.

After downloading the required driver distribution, you will need to run it by installing it like any other program, and then be sure to restart the computer.

Reason 2: incorrect resolution settings

The problem with vertical stripes may arise because the computer settings are set to the wrong resolution.

To check this, right-click on any free area of the desktop and select “Display Settings”

.

Please note that further actions are discussed using Windows 10 as an example. If you have a different version of the operating system, the name and location of the settings may be different.

In the settings window that appears, click on the “Advanced screen settings”

.

In the "Resolution"

Set the recommended setting for your computer, and then save your changes.

Video card

The video card requires attention if the laptop screen and a parallel connected monitor display a picture with multi-colored lines, and other errors in the image are also duplicated.

  • At the very beginning of the computer boot, there are no horizontal, vertical, black, white or colored stripes, but when Windows boots, the stripes appear.
  • When Windows boots, the image disappears and a black screen appears.
  • The laptop gets very hot in the area where the video card is located (the motherboard may also get hot).

Ways to solve the problem

Plume

Problems with the cable going to the matrix most often arise in older laptop models. In new models, manufacturers are already using more advanced design solutions, thanks to which the cables last a very long time.

This is the difficulty of repair; finding such a cable for an old laptop model will be difficult, but possible.

Before you go to the radio market or electronics flea market, write down the model of the matrix, without this there is no way.

The service center is unlikely to want to sell you such a rare “spare part”, and no one will want to lose a client, but what if you decide to give the laptop to them for repair.

If you find the cable you need, you’re lucky; if not, you can try to do it yourself.

To do this, you will need some minor electronics skills, a soldering iron, solder, rosin, a tester and, most importantly, MGTF type wire.

To ring a loop with a tester, you will have to reach both ends. The repair technology is simple as hell.

We call, find a break (if there is one), and instead of the broken wire, solder a duplicate wire parallel to it.

If there is no break, then the problem lies in more expensive components.

Motherboard

The system board may not fail completely. As a result of overheating of its individual section, the microchip or bus responsible for exchanging data with the video card may fail.

Also pay attention to the PCMCIA slot where the video card is inserted, to see if there are any burnt or oxidized contacts there. After all, they pour tea and coffee onto laptops.

But in any case, repairs cannot be avoided. But first order diagnostics, and if you are offered to re-solder any chip or clean the contacts, you can still agree to this.

Complicated repairs to a burnt-out motherboard are not worth it; it’s easier to replace it with a new one.

Video card

The situation is similar with a video card. A video chip is soldered onto it, which can fail as a result of overheating.

Here you need to follow three paths. Let's consider them in descending order, with respect to the high cost and reliability of the work.

  1. Replace this chip immediately (expensive, but reliable);
  2. Dismantle and reinstall the same chip - Rebowling (in most cases it gives results);
  3. Warming up the chip (pay less, but in 99% of cases the problem will recur after a while).

Everyone decides for themselves which method to use.

What video chips look like.

Burnt.

Do not forget, before leaving your laptop for service, to agree with the technician on the prices for all types of work performed, or better yet, agree on their contract.

Also, do not forget about the certificate of work performed, which indicates the date of repair, what was changed or what was repaired, as well as the warranty.
