Case. How Samsung built a TV platform on YouTube

Many advertisers have recently launched their own branded channels on YouTube. Why are these channels becoming popular? The main reason is interesting and fresh content. Conventional advertising has already tired consumers out. According to Socialbakers data for October 2021, the Samsung Russia channel has become one of the most popular official YouTube channels in Russia. Sostav asked the authors of the project how to build their own brand platform on YouTube.

Brief

When Samsung approached Zebra Hero and JAMI, it already had its own YouTube channel. The creative team was faced with the task of updating this channel, making it attractive to millennials and generation Z (people born after 1995). It was also necessary to attract the audience’s attention to the release of new products from the Galaxy S7 series. The client wanted to build loyalty and trust among the target audience, increase the average viewing time of published content, and launch a viral project.

An approach

As a solution, the client was asked to move away from flight shows on the channel to a full-fledged long-term platform. Zebra Hero and JAMI agencies developed the concept of Samsung YouTube TV - real television within YouTube. The project now has its own broadcast network, its own “faces of the channel” - popular bloggers, as well as a clear schedule for the show’s release - everything is like on real TV.

The main feature of all Samsung products is complete personalization. Therefore, viewers were given the opportunity to choose the shows that would appear on the channel.

We found the right vector almost immediately, realizing that we were coming up with not just a flight project, but an entire channel, like on TV. To make it easier to generate ideas for the show, that is, the direct content of the channel, we designated the unofficial logline for ourselves as “The first entertainment channel for smart people,” and all ideas were “run” through it (later in the wording of the logline we went towards uniqueness, and it changed to “The Channel You Create”). To begin with, we identified topics that are interesting to our target audience: travel, games, music, technology, TV series, etc. Then the creative team divided into several groups, each taking a topic, and for an hour we were brainstorming ideas for non-standard formats. After the allotted time, they presented them to each other. The very weak ones were immediately eliminated, those who immediately “got in” were entered into the table. As a result, we were left with about 10 show ideas - these were the ones that were shown to the client. By the way, almost all of them were accepted the first time, and we used them to shoot flagship teasers for pre-rolls.

Nine short videos were shot in which famous bloggers pitched ideas for future shows to viewers.

As a result, based on the number of views, the depth of viewing and the number of clicks to the channel, five shows reached the finals, the episodes of which were filmed and aired. Each show involved cross-media interaction for viewers.

1. Battle of clip makers

The idea is that popular bloggers, acting as directors, shoot videos on smartphones for talented but not yet known musical groups.

The goal is to provide a platform and support for young musicians, and in addition to show the good quality of the camera in Samsung smartphones. The “battle” helped discover several interesting names:

  • Russian street gypsy hardcore – “The Hatters”. The video for the song “I'm Not Easy Buddy” received more than 2.3 million views. Directors: Ilya Prusikin and Alina Pyazok.
  • Tatar cloud rap from Ira Smelaya. The main discovery of the project is more than 7 million views of the video in three weeks! Director: Eldar Dzharakhov.

When we came up with this project, we were having fun and we liked Russian music. We came up with this: the popular ones will promote the unpopular ones, and in order to integrate the product, we will film all the clips on cameras in smartphones. And only now, when we had already shot four videos, I realized what Samsung Mobile and I had actually done! We have done a very useful and important thing, and I wish all the bands new albums and concerts - they deserve it. Get to know them too: FLAGI, OQJAV, “The Hatters”, Tatarka. When I called the musicians for the first time and shared our idea, I had never been so happy and excited about what I was doing. It was so “high” that someone was so sincerely, lightly and honestly happy about what was essentially an advertising project. The guys from Samara, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don, St. Petersburg, Moscow immediately lit up with ideas, were worried, worried, brought all their instruments to the shooting, helped with extras, helped with everything in general, told us “thank you” and were very happy make your own clip. In addition to the clips themselves, we filmed amazing backstage videos in which the artists talk about modern Russian music and how young musicians live. It was only because we had complete creative freedom that we were able to involve such a team in the project. Nikita Tamarov is the director and author of the film “Portfolio,” which, it seems, was reposted by everyone on Facebook. Katya Sutormina and Andrey Dementyev are a producing team that was formed while working on the film “Hardcore” (“Hardcore Henry”) with Ilya Naishuller. Rita Ablaeva is a production designer who also worked on “Hardcore” and made Ivan Vyrypaev’s films “Oxygen” and “Euphoria”. Viktor Verzhbitsky, People's Artist of the Russian Federation, who read the script and immediately became interested. And many more very talented people agreed to take part in the project, because this is not an advertisement, this is a full-fledged small movie.

For me, as a director and co-author, it was interesting, first of all, to come up with stories that would exist as separate films and in which the role of the brand would be connected to the plot, that is, there was no feeling of product placement at all. In the first story, the round Samsung Gear-360 camera itself looks interesting. In fact, the form factor is one of its main features, in addition to 360-degree shooting. Anyone who has held this camera in their hands feels like it is from the future. Even if I wrote this story without reference to Samsung, then 90 percent of the time I would still use it as the main character. This is precisely the strength of this approach.

3. Mini-series “The Last Video on YouTube”

A spy story in which popular bloggers Katya Klap and Denis Kukoyaka investigate a real crime. And gadgets from Samsung help them with this. The director was Alexey Nuzhny (the film “Envelope” and the TV series “Olga” on TNT). The project released three episodes lasting from 8 to 12 minutes. After each video, the viewer is given tips and clues to help solve the crime.

At the end of each episode, viewers had to try to figure out the “villain”. The audience discussed their guesses in the comments and shared their observations. There was a large amount of user-generated content, and some viewers even made videos about their investigation.

We were amazed by the energy with which people responded to us with their attention and comments. This is the big thrill of YouTube projects - instant feedback from real viewers. There are a thousand comments under each episode. We created a page for the series on Kinopoisk and offered to rate it in order to understand the possibility of working on a second season. The rating is now 8.8 with 500 ratings. The sample is not very large yet, but it still suggests that millennials want to watch high-quality YouTube content with bloggers, feel great gratitude to the creators of such unusual stories, and project their love onto the brand.

According to the Socialbakers report for November 2021, the singer TATARKA’s video “ALTYN”, shot as part of the “Battle of the Clip Makers” show, became the most popular branded video in Russia, gaining 5,374 in just two days (as of December 21, 2016 – 7,378)!
