Dark spots on the LCD TV screen: causes of malfunction and solutions to the problem

Color rendering quality is one of the most important characteristics of any TV. Distortion of the color of the TV greatly undermines its functionality and interferes with normal operation. Sometimes it indicates incorrect settings and violation of the rules of use. However, often incorrect color display becomes a sign of serious damage and requires qualified intervention.

You can order TV repair in Moscow from a service center. We work at clients' homes 365 days a year from 7:00 to 23:00, without holidays or weekends. You can submit a request to call a specialist through an electronic form on the website or by phone.

Color distortion on a TV includes a whole range of defects. Some of them are specific to a specific type of TV and allow you to determine the cause of the malfunction at first glance. Let's consider the main symptoms of failure of the main types of television receivers:

  • LCD TVs;
  • kinescope models;
  • plasma panels.

Checking settings

Before delving into specifics, we note that all TV models may have color system settings that are lost. First you should check the parameters of the current channel. If the settings are set to NTSC and the channel is broadcast in PAL or SECAM, the colors may be mixed up.

It is also worth setting brightness, color temperature, contrast and other characteristics. This is especially true for recently purchased models. TV manufacturers deliberately increase some parameters to compensate for the high level of illumination in the store and make the picture as bright and “lively” as possible. As a result, the user has to manually configure the device at home.

As a last resort, you can reset the settings to factory settings. If this does not help, contact a specialist.

Next, we will consider color defects characteristic of each type of TV separately.

When you can't do without repairs

It is much worse when, instead of cloudy lights, there are bright, clear points of light on the screen.

This suggests that the optical dividers of the backlight LEDs came unstuck and fell off under the influence of high temperatures. For this reason, the light is not scattered, but hits a powerful beam directly through the layers of the matrix.

This problem can only be eliminated in a workshop, by replacing either the entire LED assembly or by replacing a damaged light source.

Some Kulibins offer to glue the fallen dividers back into place, but the prospects for such repairs are doubtful. The fact is that positioning the divider on the LED crystal is a very important and highly precise operation, and doing it “on the knee” is quite problematic. The best option is replacement.

This repair is clearly recognized as a warranty, therefore, if a defect occurs during the warranty period, it will be eliminated at the manufacturer’s expense.

LCD TVs

Liquid crystal TVs, or LCD TVs, are especially widely represented on the market. They are produced by almost all well-known brands, including Sony, Philips, Samsung and LG.

LCD TVs have a complex LED system that can be easily damaged by careless actions. Therefore, these devices are susceptible to various image defects, including:

  • "color negative";
  • complete or partial disappearance of any color;
  • predominance of a specific color;
  • dimming at the edges of the screen and more.

Color negative

The unnatural colors of the TV make it look like a thermal imager. Often this defect appears some time after turning on the TV and progresses.

Green faces and red grass may indicate:

  • firmware failure;
  • matrix malfunction: for example, the timing controller (T-con board) has failed;
  • loss of contact with the control panel or other systems;
  • incorrect operation of the antenna.

In the first case, it is recommended to update the software; in the remaining cases, contact a technician. Our specialists will carry out comprehensive diagnostics, perform repairs or replace faulty parts with original spare parts.

Disappearance of color

As a rule, one of the three primary colors - red, green or blue - disappears partially or completely. The distorted color of the TV can be correlated with a specific breakdown. In most cases, the video amplifier or color block is faulty. Chips may also need to be replaced.

Predominance of one color

The appearance of dominant colors indicates damage to the color adjustment board, which is responsible for the correct display of the palette. The unit could fail due to overheating or poor contact of the elements. You should urgently call a specialist, otherwise the device may completely lose its functionality.

Dimming at the edges of the screen

Blackouts on the left and right sides, as well as in other areas of the display, indicate a malfunction of the monitor's backlight system. The following reasons are possible:

  • failure of the backlight module (high-voltage converter);
  • burnout of the lamp in the matrix due to a manufacturing defect or power surge;
  • mechanical damage to the lamp;
  • failure of the inverter driver (if the center of the screen is darkened).

It is better to entrust diagnostics and repair of the unit to a specialist. It is necessary to first inform the brand and model of the television receiver so that the technician will bring all the necessary parts from the warehouse.

Removing highlights and calling a specialist

Finding out how to check your TV for glare will only help you find the source of the problem. It is important to correct this deficiency. Adjusting the settings will make this feature less noticeable. If the menu contains an adaptive backlight option, you can reduce its intensity. But pronounced image defects will require calling a specialist. Any Sony, LG, Philips or Samsung model may have similar problems and repairs will get rid of various types of breakdowns.

The occurrence of malfunctions, although rare, such a problem can cause a lot of trouble. Our company offers equipment restoration at home, which will significantly speed up all types of work. The TVF workshop has its own warehouse and searching for original spare parts will not take much time. CRT TVs

CRT televisions are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, which is largely facilitated by the widespread launch of digital television to replace analogue. However, requests regarding malfunctions of these devices are still received by our service center.

Televisions with picture tubes have specific problems.

Color distortion and staining

Color reproduction may be impaired due to exposure to the electromagnetic field of third-party devices. If household appliances (refrigerator, microwave, etc.) are operating near the TV receiver, sooner or later magnetization will occur.

In this case it is necessary:

  • Turn off the device for 20 minutes and turn it on again. This procedure will activate the built-in magnetization protection. If necessary, perform the manipulation several times.
  • Use the special button for demagnetization (if available).
  • Move other devices with electromagnetic radiation away from the TV.

If these actions do not bring results, you need to call a specialist.

Disappearance or predominance of any color

Red, green or blue color begins to disappear or, conversely, dominate due to a failure in the kinescope. A problem can occur for various reasons: the output of a cathode of a certain color has broken; the video amplifier has failed; capacitors are faulty, etc.

Professional diagnostics followed by repairs will be required.

Remove or hide Rakuten / TV Plus - how?

I have a new UE43NU7020 and I'm disappointed that when I turn it on I get a loud, blaring stream of ads from a pay TV company called Rakuten under the guise of an app called TV plus.

This is unacceptable on many levels.

  • Clearly an intrusion into my TV defaulting to streaming (via my internet connection, not the Samsung), an attempt to lure me into buying something I don't want
  • It's a fact that my TV crashes about 50% of the time when this commercial comes on.
  • The material shown is not suitable for children because
  • This TV's interface freezes and crashes when I turn it on because of this annoying and unwanted app when all I want to do is run Plex, Twitch or sometimes Youtube, but most of the time whatever I have plugged into the USB port. I can't do this half the time due to the fact that the TV Plus app streams Asian Bollywood movies at an unacceptably high volume and is annoying, distracting and often shows content I don't want my kids to see.
  • I literally cannot turn on this TV while the kids are in the room. It's pathetic, I can't even turn on my own TV when I want because of this app

I unchecked these red channels in the channel list, but what do you know, they come back immediately after restarting

I blocked the Rakuten servers on my DNS server by pointing them to 0.0.0.0, but what do you know? Rakuten constantly changes the domains they use for this trouble.

I thought I'd just remove the default gateway in the network settings and stop the whole TV from going online and sacrificing the "smart" aspect of it, but no, it only supports DHCP, you can't even set the IP address manually.

I tried uninstalling the app but it reverted to the default input so it always plays when the TV is on.

I have been a regular customer and never looked at other manufacturers for over ten years but this is too much, you have completely broken faith and abused customer relationships with this overt and aggressive marketing.

I did not consent to this app running on my hardware, nor did I allow it to use my Internet connection to stream advertisements to me.

I called the call center to find out how to get rid of this, and they told me that there was no way to live with it.

Samsung: This is unacceptable, and if you really thought this would be a good idea (Rakuten will never pay you enough to cover the losses you'll suffer from people just finding out about this and choosing a clean TV over an ethical manufacturer), then you could at least test it to make sure it won't disrupt the TV's normal operation.

I spent £400 on this piece of junk which is otherwise an average but acceptable TV but you have rendered it useless with this app.

I welcome a solution to this problem, but if there isn't one, it will be on ebay and I'll just buy the LG. My next living room TV is nearing the end of its life, it will also be LG, and the hundreds of TVs I will specify and buy at work for use in large network operations centers will also be LG or another ethical supplier and I will never use a Samsung product again. It's the same with my phones and my family's phones: if I can't trust the TV, how can I trust you with the phone?

As you can already see, I'm very annoyed by this unnecessary intrusion into my life, and instead of sitting here watching Game of Thrones, I'm typing this while there was a frozen screen of Bollywood commercials and a frozen menu. me.

Plasma panels

Plasmas have virtually no color distortions. On the contrary, they demonstrate excellent picture quality. Compared to LCDs, plasmas are distinguished by a deeper black color, the absence of “light leakage”, and a greater number of reproducible shades.

However, they are characterized by a specific defect - burnout, or image retention. It is caused by the fact that the pixel's phosphor has aged prematurely and lost its brightness, as a result it glows less brightly than all the others. This phenomenon is usually observed in places where there is a static image that is displayed on the display for a long time (channel logos, desktop screensaver, etc.). The pixel “remembers” the color information that was regularly transmitted to it, and continues to show an afterimage even after the picture changes.

To prevent pixel burnout, just follow a few simple recommendations:

  • do not leave the screen saver of the DVD player, desktop, function menu bar, etc. on the screen;
  • If available, use the Pixel shift function, which neutralizes the memory effect.

You can eliminate afterglow on a plasma screen using a special moving screen saver. There are other methods: long-term playback of white noise or a bright monochromatic picture. Some plasmas have a function to combat problem pixels (Whitewashing or Pure white buttons).

If we are talking about displays that have been used for a long time for advertising or information purposes, the number of damaged pixels can be very large. In this case, it is difficult to restore their functionality.

Impact stain

Dark spots on the TV are signs of mechanical damage. Such defects appear if the TV device has been dropped or the display has been hit or suffered a strong mechanical impact. The spots have very clear contours.

Internal heating of the TV aggravates the breakdown. Because neighboring pixels are also damaged. It is impossible to repair the display of a Samsung or LG TV; contact the service center and have the technicians change the matrix. However, this is also a financially expensive procedure.

If dark spots appear on the screen of a plasma or LCD TV caused by mechanical damage, it is more rational to buy new equipment. Repairs will cost approximately 50% of the nominal cost of the TV.

What are the alternatives?

The fear of receiving a copy with highlights forces many buyers to consider alternative options and models that are completely devoid of this drawback. Luckily they are! These are TVs equipped with OLED matrices.

In screens built on organic diodes, there is no backlight module in principle, since the matrix itself consists of many multi-color LEDs (one for each pixel of the image), each of which is an independent light source.

The disadvantages of this solution include the high cost of the screen, and, consequently, the product itself, and the relatively short life cycle of organic LEDs. They degrade and fade (elements that form blue color are especially susceptible to this scourge), which over time leads to fading of the image and permanent loss of a pixel.
