Rostelecom TV set-top box does not work, troubleshooting possible problems

Quite often, home Internet users from Rostelecom or another provider are faced with a situation where the connection suddenly drops. Yesterday everything worked, but today I can’t get online. To understand the causes of the malfunction, and, if possible, eliminate it, you need to see if all the indicators are lit on the Router. Almost any problem that causes a lack of Internet is accompanied by one of the lights on the device starting to glow red.

If a red light is on on a Rostelecom router, this does not necessarily mean a mechanical failure of the device. It is possible that the problem is quite simple, and the subscriber himself can fix it. To understand the possible reasons, you should look at which indicator has changed color and which icon is shown under it.

Causes

First, figure out why the Rostelecom set-top box turns off by itself. Based on operating experience, there may be several explanations for this:

  1. Damage to the power cable.
  2. Software malfunctions.
  3. The sleep timer is set or sleep mode is activated.
  4. Accidentally pressing the power button.
  5. Overheating of internal elements.
  6. Physical damage to the Rostelecom set-top box.

Each of the situations discussed can lead to the tuner turning on and off almost immediately. Sometimes there is a short period of time between these processes.

Which indicators should be on?

To monitor the operation of the router, and to understand in the event of a malfunction what the problem may be, it is important to know which indicators should be lit and what the icons under each light mean.

IndicatorValue/color
PWR (Power)Powering the device. When turned on, lights up green.
SYS (STATUS, Status)Responsible for system settings. If everything works, it blinks green.
INTERNET, WAN (Dog)Indicates that there is a connection. Constantly glows green..
LAN (1 to 4)LAN indicators. Green light constantly if the network cable is connected.
WLANA flashing green color indicates an established WI-FI connection.
DSLEstablishes a connection with the Internet provider. If the light is blinking, synchronization is in progress, if it is on, the connection is established.

Attention! Depending on the router model, the name of the light bulbs may differ.

What is a set-top box from Rostelecom

Rostelecom is a large company in the Russian Federation that specializes in providing Internet, landline and mobile communications, as well as interactive TV. The set-top box from Rostelecom is a device that provides interactive TV. The dimensions are very compact, so the device will fit into any interior. Despite the normal build quality, some technical problems are still possible. It happens that after switching on, channels are not shown, or the set-top box does not turn on. About this and more further in the article.

Before you begin troubleshooting the error, be sure to find out the cause of the problem, and then review the manufacturer's instructions. Perhaps it tells you how to proceed.

How to solve the problem

Based on all of the above, in order to find the reason why the Dog or other light on the Rostelecom router does not light up and troubleshoot the problem, you need to:

  1. Inspect the device for mechanical damage.
  2. Find out which indicator is not flashing or not lit green.
  3. Try rebooting the modem.
  4. Check that the wires are connected and that they are not broken.
  5. See if the service has been disabled for non-payment.
  6. Call the hotline to clarify the date of technical work.
  7. Reset the router to factory settings and set the parameters again.

If none of the methods solve the problem, you should seek help from specialists. To call a technical worker, you need to leave a corresponding request. You can do this:

Why it lights up red - reasons

New Rostelecom technologies, using fiber optic cables, have significantly improved the quality of communication. If the user has such a connection, the red LOS light on the router is on (or blinking, depending on the modem model), and the indicator labeled PON is not lit at all, this means that the signal is lost due to problems on the line. This situation cannot be corrected on your own. The only thing that can be done is to check whether the cable is inserted well into the connector of the Rostelecom router. Sometimes it happens that one of the family members may accidentally touch the wires, and they jump out of their sockets. If no problems are found in this area, only specialists can fix the problem. To leave a request to call Rostelecom employees, you need to call 88001000800.

It very rarely happens that the power button on the modem changes color, with which the device starts. Many people are interested in why the red light on the router is on if it is connected to the network and electricity is supplied to it? This problem happens in two cases:

  1. The power supply is faulty. To check this option:
  2. switch the device to another outlet;
  3. try connecting a new block.
  4. The installed router firmware crashes. The firmware can crash in several cases:
  5. due to problems with connecting wires;
  6. due to power surges;
  7. due to human intervention in system parameters.

Some router models have the ability to install new firmware. You can find out more about this possibility on the device manufacturer’s website.

Why the dog on the Rostelecom router does not light up

The most common problem on Rostelecom routers is the indicator that lights up red - Internet, which is represented on the device by a special symbol @ (dog). The main reasons for this failure are as follows:

The ISP cable is disconnected from the device

If the wire is not inserted into a special connector on the back panel of the modem (labeled INTERNET or WAN), then the router will not be able to establish a connection. The same problem occurs due to cable fractures. If the user is sure that the cable is connected correctly, it is important to check its entire length for damage.

Error in connection settings

The initial installation of equipment for connecting to the Internet requires entering the provider settings into the system parameters of the device. This allows you to enjoy uninterrupted communication in the future. If for some reason the settings are lost, the device cannot connect to the Internet, and as a result, the Internet light turns red on the Rostelecom router. To fix the problem you need to:

  • go to the router settings (open the address 192.168.1.1 in any browser);
  • enter your login and password (listed on the back of the modem);
  • Check the parameters and, if necessary, enter the correct data.

Technical characteristics of the IPTV HD mini set-top box

  • Supported VoD: Espial-Kasenna, Bitband, ARRIS (C-COR), Live555

The IPTV HD mini set-top box is very compact, its size is only 127mm x 85mm. Early versions of set-top boxes of this model were equipped with 12V 1.5A power supplies, and newer ones were equipped with 5V 1.5A. Set-top boxes are actively purchased by Rostelecom subscribers along with the digital interactive television service. Unfortunately, this model does not have proper reliability. Many subscribers were found to have very serious technical defects during the warranty period. It is these defects and how to eliminate them that I would like to share with you.

Equipment setup

Often, subscribers of Interactive TV from Rostelecom encounter the following problem - the set-top box has stopped responding to the remote control. At the same time, the TV can be controlled without problems with its help - it turns on, turns off, and adjusts the volume. There are several reasons for this phenomenon. Let's look at them! The simplest and most common problem is dead batteries. Here the subscriber is misled by the fact that the TV responds to remote control commands. It’s a paradox, but TVs usually use more sensitive IR receivers than Set-Top-Box. Therefore, diagnostics must begin with replacing the batteries. The device uses regular AAA batteries, so there will be no problems with this.

The second reason is pressed buttons. The developers have slightly underdeveloped the mechanical part of the device, and overzealous subscribers (mostly grandparents) simply push the main buttons and they stop responding. You can check the functionality of each specific button in a very simple way. Click on it and bring the infrared transmitter to the phone's camera. See the result on the screen. If the button is working, the transmitter will blink like this:

Accordingly, if it does not blink, then it is not working.

The third reason is a conflict between the set-top box and the TV. This is expressed in the fact that it does not turn off from the remote control, does not switch channels, or does not perform the same actions as the user does. There were entire batches of SML-482 HD with which the installers performed real “dances with a tambourine”, trying to get it to work normally - they turned it upside down, placed it behind the TV, etc. Moreover, this most often happened with modern Smart TVs from Samsung, LG and Sony. To exclude this scenario, try placing the set-top box as far away from the TV as possible, as far as the cable goes, and observe the behavior of the remote control. If normal operation is restored, then it’s worth trying to switch STB to a different code. I will tell you how to do this below.

Another reason is a malfunction of the remote control, as a result of which the code that controls the receiver is lost. I personally encountered something similar after resetting the remote control with code 977. On the TV after that, the setup went without problems, but the Rostelecom set-top box does not respond to the remote control. To solve this, you need to try switching to a different control code . The same method also helps with conflicts with TV. This is done like this: Point the remote control at the STB, press the “OK” and “POWER” buttons and hold for a couple of seconds. In response to this, the POWER button should blink a couple of times. This will mean that the device has entered programming mode. Now you need to enter one of the following codes:

3220 3221 3222 3223 3224

The button should blink twice again. We check whether the Rostelecom set-top box responds to the remote control or does not respond. Didn't help? - Try the following code. As a rule, one of them will solve the problem.

PS: If none of the options proposed above helped, then all that remains is to take the remote control to a service center or buy a new one.
