Main Features of AV
AV is a special connector located in most cases on the back of the TV. A cable with the appropriate input connector configuration is connected to it. An external device is connected to the other end of the cable, which is responsible for transmitting the signal to the TV.
After connecting the cable and turning on the mode, the TV will receive a signal from the external device. At the moment, this is one of the simplest and most effective ways to receive an external signal from any device. The latter include cameras, video cameras, various players (DVD and the like), mobile phones and other devices.
To correctly connect an external signal transmitter and activate the mode, you must perform the following steps:
- Make sure your TV supports AV playback function. The corresponding information is present in the technical data sheet for the device. If your TV has an AV connector, it supports this function.
- Purchase an AV cable if it is not included with your TV or connected device. There are different types of such cables. The most common ones include the so-called “tulips” and scart.
- Connect an external signal transmission device to the TV using an AV cable.
- Activate the AV operating mode in the TV menu. This is usually how it is designated.
- Make additional settings if necessary.
Thanks to this, you can quickly connect any AV device to your TV and set up the transfer of multimedia content. The mode is already outdated, but provides high quality video and audio signals even by modern standards.
Setting up digital channels on modern Philips TV models
Before you begin this process, you must first obtain TV frequency information from your service provider.
Automatic
During auto-tuning, the following procedure is provided:
- The remote control opens the menu and the “Settings” section.
- You need to find a command to search for TV channels.
- The “Reinstall channels” tab is activated.
- The state is chosen. On the back of the TV there is a sticker with a list of countries that broadcast digital television. If Russia is not there, then it is better to choose one of the Western European countries (for example, Finland, Sweden or Germany). Click “OK”.
- After selecting a country, a tab with a digital mode appears.
- Next you need to note the DVB-C cable.
- In the window with information about the service provider, the “Other” item opens.
- Goes to settings.
- On the “Fast” line, frequency scanning is activated.
- In network frequency mode, installation is done manually.
- In the “Frequencies” line, enter the value 290.00 MHz (or another).
- Speed – 6.875 (or other).
- The value 256 is entered in the QAM modulation line.
- Then you need to return to the previous menu and start automatic configuration.
- All detected channels are saved.

How to set up a Philips TV with Smart TV
With the advent of more advanced TVs, the channel settings on Philips TVs have changed somewhat. The guide now looks like this:
- We head to the main TV menu and go to.
- In the following sections we use system recommendations.
- Before the search can be started, the system will require you to set the country. You need to choose the one that is presented on the device label on the inside. So, if a device marked PFL is Sweden, since it was manufactured in this country. In other cases, we choose France or Finland.
- Go to the category, in the list that opens, set the item.
After these manipulations, the system will require you to set certain parameters. In the section that opens there will be an item called network speed or something similar - opposite it we write the value 6.875.
Then there will be two options for action - full or quick scan. In the first case, scanning may take half an hour, but not only TV channels will be added, but also radio; in the second, everything happens faster.
Quick search
- We manually register the frequency fluctuation in the 8 MHz range.
- We remove analog broadcasts, if they were already saved previously, and start the search.
Advanced Search
- Select in category.
- We set the parameter 290.00 MHz.
- Click.
If everything was done correctly, scanning will begin and a list of found broadcasts will be displayed on the screen.
What actions can you do using buttons?
Based on the description of the main keys, it is clear that with their help it is easy to turn the equipment on/off, increase or decrease the volume, switch channels and enter settings. The exception is switching and controlling the receiver, which must have a separate remote control.

It's easy to figure out how to switch channels and adjust the sound. Let's look at how to enable AV mode without a remote control and make other settings in the Menu:
- You can enter the main menu using the button or long press on Power, or on the central button of the joystick. It all depends on the TV model.
- A list of TV settings will appear on the screen. You can move up and down using the volume buttons.
- You can go to the desired subsection using the channel switching keys.
- After setting each parameter, you must confirm the actions. To do this, use “OK” or press the menu button again.
Complete instructions for operating a specific TV model are included in the device passport. You can also read it on the manufacturer’s official website.
How to enable AV mode on TV if there is no remote control
I got an old CRT TV for free, which in turn was found thrown out near the trash. The TV itself initially did not work and I repaired it, but since there is no analogue television anymore, in order to watch it you need to connect the T2 set-top box to it via tulips or, in my case, the Dandy set-top box. But the question arose of how to turn on the AV mode on the TV if there is no remote control for it, I tried all the remote controls I had for the equipment and not a single one could turn on this AV mode, even the universal remote control for which I had high hopes, alas for me It didn't suit the TV.

There is also no button anywhere on the front of the TV to turn it on. Then I started looking for a way out on the Internet, at first I found advice that if you click through the channels until the last one, the AV mode will turn on at the end, but it didn’t work out for me, after the last channel 1 turned on again.
But then, thinking logically, I realized that the TV processor must have an input to which, by applying a certain logical level, you can turn on AV to connect an external video signal. After looking at the circuit diagram for the TV, which I downloaded from the Internet, I found this microcircuit leg there, but I didn’t know what logic level needed to be applied to it in order for the mode to turn on, I decided to apply 5 volts to it, but nothing changed.
After reading a few articles on the Internet, I finally found the answer to my question, and if your TV has a SCART connector, then you can use it to turn on the AV mode. If we look at the pinout of the SCART connector, we will see that 8 pins are responsible for switching AV/TV and by applying 12V to it, we will switch the TV to the mode we need.

All that remains is to find 12V in the nearest place on the TV board and solder the wire, and carefully solder its second end through a 1 kOhm resistor to pin 8 of the SCART. I found 12 V next to the TV tuner (channel selector). Now you can connect any set-top box to the TV via tulips and the image from it will be displayed on the TV screen.

But later it became clear that one feature of this method of switching AV/TV without a remote control is that when you turn off the TV from the outlet, when you turn it on again, the TV will turn on again in TV mode. In order to now switch to AV, you need to use the power button of the TV to first turn it off (without pulling out the plug from the socket) and use the same button to immediately turn it on, then the TV will turn on in the mode we need.

Standard manual control
To understand how to set up a TV without a remote control, you need to understand the standard values and keys. They are available in all types of TVs. And these include:
- Turn on or POWER. It is located separately and is usually larger in size than other keys.
- Go to the menu section - . There are TV models where the same key is used to turn it on, only in this case it must be held for 10-15 seconds.
- The confirmation key for the selected actions is OK. There are options where you need to double-click on it to go to the menu.
- Switching channels - < and > signs. Located next to each other. They are also used for menu navigation.
- Volume control - indicated by + and -. Also needed for navigation.
Separately, older versions of TVs have a button for switching the signal source. It is designated "AV". In new versions, the broadcast source is selected through the menu.
In new TVs from Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, the control keys resemble a game joystick, next to which there is an on/off button.
Possible problems when setting up buttons
There are no big difficulties when controlling the TV using the keys. In addition to being unaccustomed to this option of switching programs, gears and settings. But sometimes the following difficulties occur:
- Scroll through settings. Especially when manually searching for channels. It takes a long time to find the right frequency and without a remote control, more time is spent.
- The buttons themselves fail. In CRT TVs, the keys become clogged with dust over time and may stop working. This will create great difficulties when tuning and switching channels.
- Broadcasting via set-top box. Settings using buttons will not help. The receiver requires a separate remote control.
- The child lock feature is enabled. It is installed so that children do not touch the buttons on the TV. And if you don’t turn it off before the remote control fails, you won’t be able to control the equipment with buttons.
What to do if the remote control for the set-top box is broken? Buy a new one. And during the replacement process, you can try switching the signal source to the antenna. And configure at least some channels through the keys on the TV.
What can you configure without a remote control?
Setting up any parameters without a remote control follows the same algorithm given above. Among the main options on all TVs are:
- Search and configure channels. It can be done automatically or manually. After completion, you must confirm and save the settings.
- Set contrast and brightness. The slider in this section is moved using the volume buttons.
- Selecting a signal source. Broadcast frequency and other technical parameters.
Important! After each setting, you must save the actions using the “Ok” key. If this is not done, all entered parameters will be lost immediately when you exit the menu.
Turn on AV without remote control
If you have a working remote control, you can use it to activate the required mode in a few clicks. Usually there is a separate button on the remote control designed to turn on the reception of an AV standard signal. If there is no remote control, certain difficulties may arise. The main inconvenience is turning on the TV screen itself. Some modern models can be activated exclusively with the remote control.
But the remote control may fail. Moreover, it is not always possible to find a suitable replacement, which is especially true for older TV models. However, in most cases it is possible to turn on the AV even without using the remote control. In this case, you can act in one of the following ways:
- Use the body control buttons of the TV. Most models have a special panel with buttons for setting basic functions. As a rule, it is located on the bottom, side or back of the case. The panel includes buttons for adjusting volume, resizing images, switching channels, and activating AV/TV modes. However, some of the latest TV models may not have a button panel;
- Try to set up the TV using your smartphone. This is true, as a rule, only for the most modern models that support control from a smartphone. But, many phones have an infrared port and the ability to install a universal remote control. This is a separate application in which you need to find the appropriate TV model. The functionality of the application is usually fully consistent with the native remote control. To turn on AV, simply click on the corresponding button in the application.
Note! Some TV models have a very small and invisible control panel. This is done in favor of modern minimalist design. Therefore, you need to carefully inspect the case and study the instructions for the device.
