As noted in the study, the increase in sales relative to 2019 is due to several main reasons. Firstly, the popularity of legal video services has increased. The self-isolation regime was an additional factor in the growth of their popularity, when many Russian services opened free or at a special price access to their libraries. The second reason is the expansion of the range of smart TVs and their functions. The device turns from a simple TV into a leisure center for the whole family. Thirdly, the average price of a device has decreased. Fourthly, retail chains quickly adapted to force majeure conditions.

For the period 2021-2024. J'son & Partners Consulting predicts sales growth (CAGR 5-6%), and by 2024 the available Smart TV fleet in Russia is expected to exceed 50 million units. The growth will be due to an improvement in the economic situation in the world and Russia, a decrease in the price of Smart TV, an increase in the purchasing power of the population and an increase in demand for legal video.

According to the M.Video-Eldorado group, in 2021, unit sales of all televisions on the Russian market increased by 16% to 7.9 million units. In monetary terms, the dynamics were also about 16%, and the market volume reached about 180 billion rubles. The share of models with Smart TV in units increased to 65% (plus 9% year-on-year) and 85% in money (plus 7%). The segment's sales growth was plus 33% in units and plus 28% in money.

As noted in the press service of M.Video-Eldorado, the penetration of TVs with Smart TV is facilitated by the growing availability of technology, the expansion of the range in the lower and middle price ranges, the assembly of a large number of TVs in Russia, and the trend during the pandemic to increase comfort in the home , as well as an increase in the amount of content to watch and be entertained. Samsung became the leader among brands in the category.

Egor Panin, head of the TV and audio equipment purchasing group at Citylink, notes that Smart TV in monetary terms already accounts for about 85% of sales of the entire TV market.

“Last year, about 5.5 million Smart TVs were sold in Russia. This is 32% more than in 2021. In monetary terms, the market segment grew by 28%. This share will continue to increase, mainly due to sales of 4K Ultra HD and 8K high-definition TVs. The potential of smart TVs has not yet been fully realized by Russians; consumers are just beginning to get used to the variety of content and the ease of searching for it, as well as the advantages and conveniences of voice assistants. The emergence of new Smart platforms, such as Yandex TV and Salyut TV from Sber, will also contribute to the growth of the Smart TV share,” notes Egor Panin.

“At the same time, we expect that this year there will be no growth in sales in terms of money on the market, which is associated with a significant increase in the cost of television panels, the rise in price and shortage of semiconductor components, as well as a multiple increase in the cost of delivering components from China,” emphasizes Yegor Panin .

As the press service of Ozon said, the peak growth in popularity of Smart TV occurred in 2021 - unit sales of smart TVs increased 4.5 times compared to 2021, and TVs with the operating system accounted for 61% of all screens sold versus 33 % a year earlier.

The driver for the growing popularity of Smart TV is the widespread transition to remote work and the desire to consume content in high quality without additional equipment - set-top boxes, game consoles or computers, the Ozon press service emphasized.

“In the first quarter of 2021, the growth in the share of Smart TVs continued - they already account for 78% of TV sets sold, we consider the forecast of J'son & Partners to be optimistic, and by 2024 we expect that 90% of all TVs will have an operating system on board ", - reported the Ozon press service.

They emphasized that for several years in a row, the leader among operating systems on TV is Android TV (used in several models from Sony, Sharp and other companies) - its share in the first quarter of 2021 was 44%. In second place are Samsung with Tizen OS (20%) and LG with WebOS (15%).

Finam Group analyst Alexey Korenev notes that the growing popularity of Smart TV is associated with convenience, wide functionality, the ability to use the TV like other electronic devices (for example, a computer screen), direct Internet access, etc.

“How actively will the direction develop? As long as potential consumers have enough money. Smart TV is a really convenient thing. The current limiting factor is the fall in household incomes. As soon as it stops, the demand for Smart TV will recover very quickly. And it will grow until some fundamentally new devices appear on the market that are more interesting to consumers,” emphasizes Alexey Korenev.

“The Smart TV function can be compared to using, for example, a tablet. This technology provides similar capabilities to televisions, the functionality of which becomes much wider. For example, until recently YouTube could only be downloaded from a laptop or mobile device, but now this function has become available on TV, and a number of other functions have received similar developments. Therefore, easier access to additional entertainment content has aroused the interest of users. A number of manufacturers believed that the pandemic would reduce the demand for the use of Smart TV technology, but even in these difficult conditions the dynamics were the opposite,” about Anton Sklovets.

The expert believes that the popularity of the Smart TV market will maintain growth dynamics within 10-15% on average per year in nominal connections for the next few years. The first reason is that the market for this technology is still undervalued and empty. The second driver of growth will be the continued disunity of TV manufacturers - to this day there is no single platform (each manufacturer has its own offers and its own store).
