Digital terrestrial TV has a number of advantages over conventional analogue: Digital quality The technology of digital TV transmission allows you to receive high-quality images without loss, in the form in which it is formed in television studios. Reliable reception and high-quality signal reception is possible even on the first floors of a building without direct visibility to the transmitting tower. Without wires, thanks to the absence of an antenna cable, you can easily carry your set-top box and receive the signal in any place convenient for you.

- Digital and satellite television sets
- Digital terrestrial television broadcast map
The list of digital terrestrial television channels (DVB-T/T2) is a new television broadcasting standard that replaced the old analogue television signal. At the moment, more than 30 television channels and 3 radio channels are broadcast in Yekaterinburg on 3 radio carrier frequencies.
The main advantages of switching to digital broadcasting
Digital transmission of a television signal has great advantages over analogue broadcasting:
- Clear, stable images without analog distortion
- increased reception coverage area
- more channels
- possibility of broadcasting high definition channels - HD
- high noise immunity
Transition to digital broadcasting in the Sverdlovsk region
The transition to digital broadcasting in the Sverdlovsk region turned out to be longer than previously planned.
Initially, broadcasting was provided based on the DVB-T protocol in the MPEG-4 format, and not in the MPEG-TS format (for simplicity - MPEG2), for which the protocol was intended. Already at this stage, many had difficulties with reception - the picture crumbled into “squares” when interference occurred, even in places with reliable reception. Realizing that it was not possible to correct the situation with poor reception, we did not use the capabilities of digital broadcasting in our arsenal of proposals.
At this point in time, broadcasting is carried out in MPEG-4 format on DVB-T2 transport and there are no problems with reception and broadcasting.

Signal reception
Signal reception is possible on TVs with a built-in DVB-T2 receiver or when using an external DVB-T2 receiver (set-top box). It is recommended to use a dicimeter range antenna with a narrow radiation pattern as a receiving antenna.
How to receive DVB-T2 channels on a DVB-T receiver?
Unfortunately, no way. At the level of headend base stations, conversion of broadcast formats is possible, but at the level of subscriber receivers, such solutions are not practical: it is easier and cheaper to purchase a DVB-T2 standard receiver.

Tour of the RTRS branch "Sverdlovsk ORTPTS"
Good day to all! A month later, I was ready to write about the excursion to the radio and television station, which the students of my institute and I visited thanks to the invitation of Irina Gordeeva. We were shown television and radio transmitters, and also visited the broadcast quality control and monitoring center. Read about all this below.
Unfortunately, a misunderstanding arose between our institute and the organizers; instead of the invited group of 12 people, they sent twice as many. Luckily, we managed to split into two groups and walk around the station. The fact is that all radio transmitters are very noisy, and in a room like the one in the photo below, it is very difficult to listen to our guide Igor.
Despite poor hearing, Igor told the students in detail about the UVK broadcast transmitters with a power of up to one kilowatt located in this room. Each transmitter is configured to broadcast its own broadcast program. If you look closely, each one has a sticker that says which radio station it broadcasts.
The cabinet in the photo below, as a “Power Supply” teacher, I was very interested in it. ASU is an input distribution device. The essence of this device is as follows: it receives, distributes and reserves electricity. In this case, two independent sources of electricity are connected to the cabinet, priority is given to the second source. If the second one fails, the devices located in this cabinet automatically switches the load to a working line. If I do get around to it this summer, I will definitely create a second blog in which I will talk about such devices.
On the floor above there are digital television transmitters. If radio transmitters had internal cooling, here we see forced external ventilation cooling.
During the excursion, I discovered a new device for myself - a bridge for adding the power of television transmitters. The device is intended to ensure the joint operation of several television radio transmitters on a common load, in this case an antenna, without mutual influence.
I find myself thinking that when visiting such excursions you need to use a voice recorder, otherwise after a month of visiting, everything is completely forgotten. As far as I remember, the photos in the gallery below show the technical equipment room. Here they control the quality of the transmission.
On-air or central control room.
We were also taken to the Vesti Ural studio, where many, including me, made themselves! =) I didn’t think it was so big, if my memory serves me correctly, the OTV studio is a little smaller.
Television cameras with a prompter. Many who see this device for the first time ask where the camera lens is, and when they find out where it is, they don’t understand for a long time why it is behind the mirror. The prompter is a hint for the announcer; the text that is displayed there is invisible to us viewers. If the prompter were placed on the side of the camera, the announcer would have to take his eyes away from the camera, but in our case he is located in front of the lens and the audience gets the impression that the announcer is talking to him.
On the floor above there is a camera operator's room; the photo below shows the sound engineer's console.
When I was studying as a bachelor, I just missed such excursions to communications enterprises. Thanks to such events, students get acquainted with their future specialties and possibly future jobs. I have set a goal for myself to organize several more excursions to telecommunications enterprises in the next academic year, I hope I will succeed. The photo shows our friendly group of students at the base of the TV tower.
If you suddenly have a suggestion where to go on an excursion, be sure to let me know in the comments or in private messages on social networks. This concludes my photo report, thank you all for your attention! =)
