“The network cable is not connected” at Rostelecom: why and what to do?

Nothing can be more annoying than when the Rostelecom TV picture is replaced by a sparse error message stating that the network cable is not connected. This clearly indicates hardware problems with the equipment. And most often they arise on the user’s side. Fixing them is not that difficult. The cable or connectors may need to be replaced. When diagnosing a problem, you should act carefully and slowly.

What does this error mean?

Rostelecom television receives data from the provider’s servers in digital format. At the end point of transmission, they arrive at the network interface of the set-top box from the router. The latter is connected to the cable entering the apartment or house. All components of a network segment are connected to each other by cable lines. You can make a list of possible causes of communication failure, which will allow you to understand what to do to troubleshoot:

  • contacts have been broken or connection characteristics have changed;
  • there is a break in the data line;
  • the communication channel is interrupted as a result of software failures;
  • The settings of the router or other equipment have been reset.

First of all, it is worth cutting off simple reasons. And only after that proceed to checking the software components and examining the settings.

In conclusion

What to do if there is no network connection? Everything is extremely simple - carefully check all the equipment in the house and contact the Rostelecom operator to find out if there are any problems on the line. If after all the measures it was not possible to restore the network connection, then call a specialist. They will quickly identify the problem and fix it.

Checking connections

First of all, it is worth checking the condition of cable lines and contact groups . The wire entering the apartment and going to the router, as well as connecting the latter to the Rostelecom set-top box, are carefully inspected. The insulation must not be damaged; creases and twists in the structure of the internal conductors are not allowed.

Advice! If problems are found with the cable, it is recommended to replace the segment.

Next, the ports of the router and set-top box are checked. RJ-45 connectors are pulled out of them by the ends of the cable. To do this, press the thin strip of the latch on the plastic part and pull the wire. The connector and the insides of the port socket are inspected. Perhaps dirt or debris accidentally got there. If deficiencies are found, they are eliminated.

A problem with the network cable may be caused by oxidation of the contacts or damage to them in the connector area. This is a small plastic part at the end of the wire that is inserted into the ports of the router and set-top box. In normal condition, each of the connector pins looks like a clean yellowish strip of metal. When oxidized, its color changes from dark green to black. This means that the resistance of the contact group is much higher than the nominal one, and the signal level is not enough to maintain a stable communication channel. The connector needs to be changed. How to do this will be described below.

Client side problem

To restore the Internet connection on your computer as soon as possible, you need to follow several recommendations given below:

  1. Pull out the plug and cable from the Ethernet port, wait a while (up to ten seconds) and plug it in again. This action will reboot the network connection, after which the Internet can work again.
  2. Inspect the cable for external damage. It happens that the wire was severely crushed, chewed, and so on. The connection will, of course, disappear and the cable will need to be replaced.
  3. Reboot all equipment, including the computer and router. Perhaps the connection disappeared due to a system failure, or some libraries came into conflict with each other. Rebooting the system will restore everything.
  4. Try connecting the network cable to another computer device. If the connection is present, then the problem is on your side, and it is in the main computer device (rebooting can also help).

According to statistics from the provider, which studies all complaints, in 80 percent of cases the recommendations described above help restore the Internet connection.

Replacing the connector

If oxides are detected on the RJ-45 contacts, it is clearly not held tightly in the socket, or the end of the cable is not securely fixed, it is recommended to replace the connector . With some care, even a beginner can get the job done the first time.

First you need to go to an electronics store and buy a couple of new connectors. Crimping pliers are also useful, which you can rent or borrow from friends. The procedure for replacing the connector is as follows.

  1. You need to carefully examine the old connector and write down the color sequence of the conductors. To see them, you can use a magnifying glass.
  2. If the order of the conductors cannot be determined, you can use the standard following scheme. But it is recommended to crimp both sides of the cable so as not to encounter confusion of contact groups.

Advice! To make your task easier, you need to consider the connector. The part that is inserted into the port has thin contacts. Under them, when looking at the end, holes for conductors are visible. At the other end of the connector, in the recess, there is a fairly large part, a plastic clamp for the cable.

The rules for pruning are simple. There should be wire insulation in the clamping area. The length of the released conductors should be made slightly greater than the distance from the latch to the edge of the contact groups. The standard procedure is as follows.

  1. The cable is cut 2-3 cm further than the old connector, strictly perpendicular to the axis.
  2. Carefully, so as not to damage the insulation of the internal conductors, remove the sheath of the wire 1.5-2 cm long.
  3. The inner thread braid is removed.
  4. The conductors are neatly arranged in the order determined by the old connector.
  5. The standard order is: white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown, from right to left from the observer's side.
  6. Conductors can be conveniently laid on a flat surface. It is necessary to ensure that the ends lie as evenly as possible, parallel over a considerable length, so it will be easier to insert them into the connector holes.
  7. By applying the laid structure to the connector, they determine by eye how much the conductors need to be trimmed so that the clamp clamps the area of the cable with insulation.
  8. Carefully place the laid line of conductors, pushing it all the way and making sure that each of them falls into the holes of the contact group.

After this, just insert the connector into the hole of the crimping pliers and firmly squeeze their handles. If such a tool is not available, you can use a pair of flathead screwdrivers. First, the thick one presses on the clamp, clamping the cable along the insulation.

Then, placing the connector on a flat surface with the contact group facing up, gently press a thin screwdriver onto each of the metal plates so that the internal blade clamps cut through the insulation and come into contact with the conductor cores.

Important! Do not use excessive force to avoid breaking the connector.

We call the operator

If there is a problem with your network connection, do not rush to check all your equipment and wires. Without understanding the situation, you can only cause harm by ruining any settings. First of all, we contact the operator Rostelecom and tell you in detail about the problem. The employee will check the current condition of the line, whether maintenance work is being carried out, etc. If the operator has assured that everything is in order on the company’s part, then it is necessary to check the equipment settings at home.

It should be noted that in the future, it is quite possible that you will need to contact the operator again. If, after all the manipulations at home, the Rostelecom interactive television still does not appear, you will need to call specialists.

We do not rule out that the cable was damaged in the entrance or on the roof. This type of problem is not serious and can be resolved quickly enough. It's more difficult when equipment fails. In this case, repair work may take several days; it all depends on whether the necessary elements are available to carry out restoration work.

Reboot the router and check the settings

If the set-top box says on the TV that the network cable is not connected, you should check the status of the router. First, the device is rebooted. It is recommended to do this in a separate section of the router settings. However, in practice, you can use a special button on the case. The reboot is done as follows:

  • the router turns off;
  • the device plug is pulled out of the socket;
  • after a pause of 5-10 minutes, the router is turned on again.

On a note! Some models have not only an on/off button, but also a separate one for rebooting. Such a router does not have to be physically disconnected from the network. Just use the reset button.

The set-top box is also turned off and on so that the device tries again to obtain an IP address and establish a communication channel. If system functionality has not been restored, it is worth checking the router settings. How exactly to configure the device is described in detail in its operating instructions, as well as in the documentation for the Rostelecom set-top box. Without setting the correct parameters, you will not be able to get rid of the problem with the network cable.

What to do if there is no access to the Internet Rostelecom

The main causes of problems are known. Next you need to move on to the main thing.

Preliminary actions. Zero on balance

The search for a solution to the problem should begin with a simple question: “Did I make a payment for Rostelecom services this month?” One of the possible reasons for a sudden and unexpected disconnection from the Internet is payment arrears. Possible problems:

  • The user forgot to pay for the service.
  • The payment has been made, but it has not yet gone through.
  • When paying, the personal account number was entered incorrectly.
  • The cost of services increased, but the client paid a smaller amount because he did not know about it or forgot.
  • The consumer decided not to pay for any of the connected services. In most cases, a package of services is connected using a common personal account with a single wallet, and it is not possible to pay for only one of them. For example, it is impossible to pay only for the Internet, while ignoring the payment for the telephone.

Rostelecom decided very quickly - the Internet will appear after the user deposits the missing funds into the personal account. Then you need to consult with the company’s specialists on issues related to payment and disabling individual services.

Action 1. The consumer of Rostelecom services is to blame for the lack of connection to the network

You have enough money on your balance, but the Internet still doesn’t work? This means that we need to take further action. The user needs to check whether everything is functioning correctly on his end.

The first thing you need to do is follow the standard steps - reboot the router and try to access any website. If the network appears, then the problem is solved, but if not, then you need to further look for other reasons.

  1. Malicious viruses. You need to run an antivirus program and check your PC for viruses. It is worth noting that in the 21st century the number of viruses is growing and over time they are becoming more sophisticated. They can steal not only the user’s personal data, but also make it slower or stop the Internet altogether. If the antivirus detects dangerous files, they need to be deleted or quarantined. Then you need to restart your computer and try opening a site again. Does not work? No need to get upset and continue searching for the problem.
  2. The programs are outdated. After the client is convinced that the computer is safe and does not pose any threats, he needs to check the software. Typically, drivers are updated automatically, but if this does not happen, then manual installations are required. This is done as follows: Open “Task Manager”
  3. Find network adapters
  4. Right-click and click “refresh”
  5. After the update, restart your PC and try logging into the browser again.
  6. Happened? If not, then you need to move on.
  • Broken cable. It is worth checking the integrity of the cable. Often, cable breaks occur in apartments where there are pets or furniture has been rearranged.
  • High load is not the network. It is necessary to pay attention to the number of programs that work via the Internet. If you have access to the network, but the speed leaves much to be desired, you can assume that the network is slowing down due to excess load. You need to close all currently unnecessary programs. Therefore, before wondering what happened to the Rostelecom Internet today, you need to check the number of current downloads, especially if the consumer works with a channel of up to 15 Mbit/s. The most common answer to the question of what is the reason for Rostelecom’s slow Internet speed is an overestimation of the channel’s capabilities. Most likely, there are no problems, but the whole point is that the channel is overloaded with downloads from sites, torrents or cloud storage. Online games and interactive television also significantly load the channel. To solve this problem, there are two options: switch to a tariff with a higher speed or during operation, plan large downloads and control the channel load.
  • Action 2. Equipment malfunction: problems with the modem or Wi-Fi router

    In the cases listed below, there will be a little more difficulty in solving the problem of low Rostelecom Internet speed. It must be remembered that more of these problems can be solved, the main thing is to be patient.

    If the Internet works poorly or does not work at all, then the reason may be the following:

    • There is a problem with the router or PC. To fix the problem, you just need to restart your computer or router, or both at the same time.
    • Wi-Fi malfunction. There is a possibility that slow Internet speed does not depend on the provider, but on the fact that the router is faulty or incorrectly configured. It’s not difficult to figure this out - you need to connect the router to the PC using a wire. If the Internet appears, this means that you need to reconfigure or update the router firmware. The user can do this himself or contact specialists.
    • Damaged wires or ports (or both). If the Internet turns off every few minutes, then the reason probably lies in a faulty wire or port. In this case, the problem is solved by connecting through a different cable or other ports.
    • ADSL modem failure. If the Internet connected via your phone is not working well, then the reason is most likely a faulty modem. In this case, you will need to repair your existing device or purchase a new one.

    Action 3. The provider is to blame for the lack of access to the Rostelecom network

    If problems unexpectedly arise with the Rostelecom Internet, and previously this happened extremely rarely, then most likely there is no data transfer due to a breakdown or failure on the part of the provider. The first thoughts that come to mind in such a situation are: “Who should I call and complain about the lack of Rostelecom network? Why weren’t you informed about possible problems?”

    The company informs customers in advance about scheduled technical work, but surprises such as wire breaks or equipment breakdowns cannot be foreseen. You can find out more details from consultants by calling 8-800-1000-800. The support specialist will clarify the address and inform you whether the technical services are working on troubleshooting, and he will also explain how long it will take to restore data transmission.

    Technical problems on the part of the provider

    When the cable structure has been checked, the connectors have been replaced, but the problem with the network cable has not been resolved, you should call the technical support service of the provider. This is recommended if the user does not have sufficient qualifications to check the router settings.

    Support specialists will offer the optimal algorithm of actions and guide the subscriber through all stages of system testing. They will also help if problems arise on the provider’s side. As practice shows, the support service responds to requests promptly and problems are resolved in a minimum amount of time.
