The TV has no picture, but there is sound - all the reasons and effective repair options

The TV screen shows halfway - this is one of the popular problems with which clients come to us. At the same time, many users believe that fixing the problem will be expensive and not profitable, which is why they strive to buy new equipment. But this is absolutely not true. Repairs in most cases are inexpensive and cost significantly less than replacing the TV with an updated model. But it is worth noting the fact that independent repairs are impossible and you will need to contact professional service employees.

To order a specialist visit, call us by phone number or fill out a request online, after which we will call you back within 15 minutes. “Polite Service 5+” works daily. Work schedule includes weekends and holidays. Repairs are carried out from 7:00 to 23:00, which allows you to choose a convenient time for the technician to arrive. We offer both urgent departure and pre-registration.

Possible causes of malfunction

If half of your TV screen is covered in streaks and no longer works properly, in most cases a professional repair is required. You can try to fix minor glitches by simply turning off the device and letting it rest. In this case, after a reboot, the malfunction of the microcontroller can be corrected, and the normal image will be restored.

If half of the picture on the TV is missing or distorted, the following reasons may be true:

  • If vertical or horizontal stripes appear on one side of the display, the cause is most often damage to the LCD matrix. The defect appears after a strong impact, fall or compression of the screen. It can also be damaged if the screen is exposed to direct sunlight for a long time or if it is wiped with a wet cloth.
  • If one side of the screen is completely black, this may indicate a faulty processor, broken cable, or damaged motherboard. In all cases, it is necessary to call a specialist to your home to conduct a thorough diagnosis.
  • One half of the screen appears darker than the other. This can happen if the screen backlight does not work normally. The LEDs have failed, making the image difficult to see.

Almost always, if half of the TV does not show, you need to call a specialist. Do not try to open the case yourself and change parts - this ultimately only leads to more serious damage. The matrix has a complex multilayer structure and is very easy to damage.

Features of the malfunction

When the screen displays half of the quality, and the other half transmits a distorted image, it is important to determine the exact source of the problem. To do this, our company performs diagnostics, where all possible problems that could cause a defect are checked. Please note that repairs will be carried out as quickly as possible if accurate indications of the fault are provided at the time of request. Among them, the popular ones are:

  • Half the screen is darker than the other;
  • The TV displays a striped half-screen;
  • Half of the screen does not work (it is black or white).

We strongly recommend that you clarify these details when submitting your application. The most detailed information will allow the master to prepare for the departure as correctly as possible.

One half is darker than the other

Main reasons:

  • The matrix operates in preset parameters mode;
  • Part of the backlight has failed. These are both the diodes themselves and the inverter;
  • The TV settings were lost when updating.

If you have problems of this type, you can try to fix them yourself. To do this, turn off and on the equipment from the outlet for about 30 minutes. If after switching on nothing has changed, call the professionals of our company. In such a situation, only a specialist will be able to determine the source of the problem and repair it, since in 90% of cases it is necessary to disassemble the case and work with the internal modules. The testing includes the inverter, backlight, power supply, panel, matrix, serviceability and up-to-date firmware.

Please note that software failures can only be restored using licensed software. Do not try to download firmware from third-party sites on the Internet. This can lead to serious damage.

Half striped screen

If the TV shows half normally, but on the other hand the entire image is striped, then most likely there are problems with the matrix. In this case, the defect may lie in other adjacent elements. This is a breakdown of the cable, oxidation or burnt contacts on the circuits. In any individual case, performing repair work yourself is impossible. Each type of restoration is complex and expensive. Even the slightest mistake can lead to matrix replacement. To prevent this, never attempt to tamper with the equipment yourself.

It is important to know that the matrix almost never fails due to natural reasons or due to manufacturing defects. The main source of the problem is the human factor. Horizontal and vertical stripes appear for several reasons:

  • Mechanical damage;
  • Location of TV in direct sunlight;
  • Cleaning the surface of the matrix with a wet cloth;
  • Incorrect installation of the bracket.

If you want to keep your equipment in good condition for as long as possible, always follow the operating instructions. To do this, study the instructions and requirements of the manufacturer. Additional advice can be obtained from the specialist after the repair.

Half the screen is black

Breakdown is considered one of the most popular. It occurs more often than those previously listed. And the saddest thing in this situation is that the appearance of a defect is common to all modern TV devices. For matrices of different technologies, the sources of the problem will be different.

For liquid crystal and LED, the main culprits are:

  • Processor malfunction. It has overheated or is failing. Poor contact with the board;
  • The motherboard is not functioning. Tracks or any microcircuits have burned out;
  • Matrix cable defect;
  • Capacitors are swollen and faulty;
  • Mechanical damage after transportation, installation;
  • Natural wear and tear (found on models from all brands);
  • Factory defects of built-in modules.

In the case of plasma models, the number of problems is small:

  • Software failure;
  • Damage in the matrix.

In each individual case, it is impossible to fix problems on your own. However, we recommend not even trying to open the case. If the screen floor does not work or has defects, the only solution is to contact a professional.

Remedies

If half of the plasma TV screen does not show, this may indicate a software failure. To fix the problem, you will need to reinstall the software, and the problem will be fixed. However, in most cases this is not enough. A type of ½ display failure is when the TV has a white half of the screen. As in the case of black, this indicates the same problems that can be fixed in the following ways:

  • Replacing a faulty matrix. If it has received mechanical damage, it cannot be restored. This is a fairly expensive repair option; in some cases it is cheaper to simply buy a new TV.

Reasons for missing image

The causes of the problem are mainly hardware in nature. Software malfunctions are less common.

The most common type of malfunction is a black screen with sound. There may be no sound, but the TV appears to be on. The cause of this problem is non-working backlight diodes.

Users may experience breakdowns both immediately after purchasing the TV (manufacturer’s defect) and during operation (as a result of wear and tear on hardware components).

The inverter that supplies power to the diodes may also be broken.

Fig.3

Owners of LCD TVs are often faced with a situation where a split into two parts appears on the screen.

The contrast levels of the sides differ from each other, and many “dead” pixels appear. The reason is a faulty matrix.

In rare cases, the problem disappears after rebooting the device. In the rest, you will have to replace the matrix.

Fig. 4 – Problems with the matrix

If the backlight on the TV does not work, it is easier to immediately take it for repair or return it to the store if you just bought the device.

This is a common factory defect caused by a faulty motherboard.

This problem is characterized by the appearance of a short flash after turning on the TV and a black screen.

If you get very close to the TV and try to look closely with a flashlight, you can see the picture.

The sound works fine, but it is impossible to watch such TV. In the video you can see what the problem looks like:

At home, an ordinary user is unlikely to be able to replace the board, so it is better to immediately take the device to a service center.

Note that in smart TVs, the cost of repairing the board can sometimes be equal to the price of a new TV.

Another common problem is the appearance of frame scanning. The image is divided into two equal chats, one of which is completely distorted, and the second is characterized by very poor quality. The problem is accompanied by sound interference.

The cause of the breakdown, as in the previous version, is the system board. The problem cannot be fixed using standard methods.

Fig.5 – example of frame scan

Also, the absence of a picture can be the cause of a one-time bug, problems in the functionality of the video tuner, radio channel, video processor, color block and other components.

Let's figure out how to determine the nature of your TV's breakdown and what to do for effective repairs.

"Remontano" - professional home repair shop

We work with all models of modern TVs from LG, Samsung, Sony, Philips and other popular brands. If the left or right side no longer displays the image correctly, contact our service for a comprehensive diagnosis. The problem is solved by installing new components to replace damaged parts, adjusting the backlight or reinstalling the software.

To get results faster, when submitting an application, name the make and model of the device, and accurately list the existing symptoms of malfunctions. This will allow the master to quickly find his way and take with him the necessary set of spare parts and tools. The check will show exactly where the breakdown occurred and which parts need to be urgently replaced.

One of the most common malfunctions that people contact the service center with is that half of the TV screen does not work.

Brands LG, Samsung, Sony, Philips are susceptible to this problem. In most cases, it is not enough to delve into the settings; complex diagnostics and repairs are required.

If the TV is half dark, you should not resort to repairing it yourself, as it is associated with many risks.

Stripes on half of the TV screen can be eliminated in the TV-Fix workshop. The service is available to residents of Moscow and Moscow Region.

A qualified TV repairman will diagnose the exact cause of the breakdown, restore normal operation of the TV, and make the necessary adjustments. Telephone number to contact a specialist: 8.

One half of the TV is darker than the other

If half of the TV screen does not work correctly (one part is darker than the other), then the possible reasons for this defect are:

  • The monitor operates in preset mode.
  • Part of the LCD panel backlight has failed.
  • Settings failed during software update.

You can take the following measures yourself - restart the equipment by completely de-energizing it (remove the plug from the socket) for about 20 minutes. If it doesn’t help, then call the service center. Only a specialist will determine the source of the problem (technical failure, panel failure, power supply). Software and driver updates are carried out only with licensed software.

Major breakdowns of popular brands

It is interesting to know that special research centers keep statistics on breakdowns in the television market. They identified 7 main brands that are today leaders in sales of LCD and plasma TVs, and calculated what percentage of buyers contact service centers due to breakdowns. The results look like this:

  • Samsung – 4.5%;
  • LG – 4%;
  • Panasonic – 2.5%;
  • Sony, – 3%;
  • Sharp – 3%;
  • Toshiba – 4%;
  • Philips – 4%.

But if we analyze the two main camps of TVs: LED and LCD, then there were almost 2 times more calls to service center specialists with plasma models than with LCD devices.

All problems with TVs have their reasons and they do not always depend on the user. No matter how expensive your equipment is, it may contain defective spare parts, soldering defects or internal device errors. That is why manufacturers establish a warranty period in which all defects must manifest themselves, and if a defect is detected, all warranty replacements are made.

Let's find out what breakdowns are most common among popular brands.

Samsung

Samsung LCD is one of the most popular purchases today. They are well priced, easy to set up, have many convenient features and an excellent reputation. These TVs have a relatively simple design and excellent instructions from the manufacturer, thanks to which users can independently understand many technical issues.

If problems arise with them, then most often they are related to the firmware. A software failure can completely disable the device. The problem is solved by resetting to factory settings and installing new software.

Some models have problems with the display:

  • defects or damage to the screen (matrix replacement);
  • the image disappeared (checking the T-CON controller);
  • There is sound, but there is no picture (check the inverter, transformers, controllers)

In general, the equipment is reliable and of high quality.

LG

The South Korean manufacturer is confidently in second position in the sales ranking. Led LV TVs are distinguished by good build quality and high-tech components. They have many smart features, free applications and a very affordable price.

The following breakdowns occur on LG TVs:

  • after turning on, after 2-3 seconds the TV goes into auto mode (you need to check the system board);
  • when turned on by the button, the indicator blinks once and nothing else happens (the power supply cannot start);
  • narrow horizontal stripe (capacitors need to be checked);
  • does not allow you to save the settings (change the mode, and if that does not help, then you need to update the software).

LG TVs may experience problems with the plasma or LCD matrix. If you hear a click and the image disappears, then most likely one of the modules on the system board has failed. With such breakdowns, it is better to carry out diagnostics in a specialized service center.

Sony

Electronic equipment TM Sony is a Japanese quality product. All TV models of this brand have an elegant design, excellent assembly and are highly reliable and durable.

As for malfunctions of Sony TVs, they also sometimes occur. Here is a list of typical problems:

  • at the beginning of work there is a defect in the image shift on the screen (the problem must be looked for in the matrix);
  • the screen suddenly went out (soldering of inverter resistors);
  • colors are displayed unevenly (TCON controller, cable contacts);
  • clicks inside the device and the indicator (power supply) blinks;
  • vertical stripes (capacitors).

If your TV begins to work incorrectly, extraneous sounds appear, or the picture is unstable, write down the symptoms that you notice. This will be useful in diagnosis.

Panasonic

Good old Panasonic is a manufacturer proven over the years. All Panasonic TM TVs are highly valued in the market. Their displays are capable of conveying very realistic images and natural color reproduction.

The following malfunctions occur in TVs of this brand:

  • quiet sound from the broadcast, but through the AV input the sound is normal (motherboard chip);
  • horizontal scanning problems (capacitors);
  • The desired mode (capacitors) does not turn on.
  • spontaneous transition to emergency mode (faulty stabilizer transistor).

If the TV does not respond to operator commands or the settings cannot be saved, the software may be faulty and your LCD TV will need new firmware.

Half striped TV screen

The appearance of vertical (horizontal) multi-colored stripes on the TV screen indicates a failure of the matrix . This is the most expensive and difficult part to replace, so when eliminating a defect, there is only a solution - a call to the workshop. The specialist takes measures to restore the matrix (change the cable, restore contacts on the damaged circuit), if this is possible, if not, then this element is completely replaced with a new one. Only original components from the official manufacturer are used. Independent search is associated with large time and financial costs.

Important! In most cases, the matrix fails not due to a manufacturing defect, but to non-compliance with operating rules. Mechanical damage may occur on the plasma panel if it falls from an improperly secured bracket. Liquid ingress - when wiped with a damp cloth, pixel burnout (black dots on the screen) - location under direct sunlight. At all stages of operation of television equipment, it is important to comply with established technical standards and recommendations.

“Matrix repair” of a TV/monitor

In the process of writing one of the reviews, about the use of a Chinese trinket “ a la Ambilight

“, the matrix of my TV died.
It didn’t die completely; stripes appeared across the screen.
This defect cannot be restored practically (it is difficult and not possible on any TV).:) The workshop will probably offer you a replacement matrix (which is very expensive), but looking at the stripes is very unpleasant and annoying. However, there is a relatively simple option for “repairing” such a malfunction. In fact, calling it “repair” is not entirely correct (that’s why it’s in quotes), but it is quite possible to extend the service life of a damaged matrix - especially since the defect can be removed almost completely!:)
It’s curious, but even my acquaintances who are “hobbyist repairers” of TVs and other electronics didn’t know about this “treatment” option, so I decided to write a short review in case anyone else finds it useful? For example, it has already come in handy for me!;)

For the described “repair” there is practically no need for special knowledge, we will not delve into the “wilds” - there is no need, we will make do with just a few popular terms and phrases for a general understanding of what we will be doing. We will not need specific tools (including even a soldering iron and a tester!), but we will need some accuracy and relatively straight hands. The entire repair (for me) took about half an hour, and most of the time was spent on twisting the screws to disassemble/assemble the TV, or rather its back cover.

This is what my screen looked like after the defect appeared! In fact, there are variations in the manifestation of such a malfunction - different types of stripes, darkening of part of the screen, etc.

This is what it looked like after the “repair” - as they say, feel the difference!
Almost perfect, and those distortions that you may see in the photo are the phenomenon of interference (if I’m not mistaken in the name of the physical phenomenon), and they will almost disappear if you click to view the full version of the image

I (at least) observed a positive effect from such a “treatment” on a couple of TVs from LG and one from Samsung, so it’s definitely worth a try.

Let's start!? ;)

Let me clarify right away: We will not make any changes to the design and circuit that could cause additional harm to the rest of the TV circuit!

However, we must understand that no one is immune from their own negligence! If you accidentally miss a “brick” on the screen or a screen on a brick, or other force majeure circumstances occur, it’s not my fault!:)
You carry out all work at your own peril and risk!:) Also, be aware of the risk of electric shock - once the back cover of the TV is removed, dangerous voltages are exposed!

At the same time, the actions described below are not a “panacea” - in your particular case, there may be another malfunction, or the design of the TV... The main thing is that “an attempt is not torture”;) - and you do not perform any irreversible actions!

First we need to find the timing controller board (T-con) of our TV. To do this, WITH the TV OFF, remove the back cover (unscrew many, many screws). When disassembling, it is advisable to place the screen on a table covered with a soft covering so as not to push/scratch the screen.

T-con can usually be identified by several flat cables coming out of it onto the matrix, and an incoming large cable from the main “motherboard”. The cables going to the matrix are covered in this case, but we will get to them ;)

Here it is, the payment we need. Most often, it has a pair of loop outputs to the matrix (less often four). These loops (via additional drivers) control the pixels of the matrix.

During the “repair” process, we will need to repeatedly disconnect these loops. In general, there is nothing complicated, but for those who have never encountered anything like this, it’s better not to go there and you need to pick up, for example, a fingernail, a black bar and pull it up - it should rise up. After this, the cable can be pulled out of the connector.

For subsequent steps, you will need a strip cut out of thin paper (I used a cash receipt). First, we use a strip about 5mm wide, the length is arbitrary (several cm). We put it on part of the connector contacts, covering (isolating) part of the contacts, insert the cable and snap the lock. Then we turn on the TV and watch the result.

Depending on which contacts you covered, the image may have a wide variety of distortions in the form of vertical, horizontal stripes, or be absent altogether - don’t be alarmed!:)
After each check, turn off the TV, unsnap the connector lock, pull out the cable and move the strip of paper, and so on until the end of the connector, go through all the contacts... We achieve the optimal result!

On both TVs it “triggered” in approximately the same places - this is pin 8-10 (if you count from the right) on the left connector. Moreover, if you slightly move the bar to the left or right, the result did not disappear, but a periodic small change in brightness appeared in the right corner of the screen. Ideally, it is necessary to insulate as few contacts as possible (in addition, it is not always possible to choose a suitable option with such a width of a strip of paper), so the next step is to use a thinner (or wider) strip of paper in the place we found. We move it slightly until we get the best image.

After obtaining a result that suits you, you can leave a piece of paper in the connector, or seal the necessary contacts, for example, with thin tape. I just left a piece of paper...

In this case, we managed to get an almost perfect result! A white screen without stripes - they were most visible on white. Some unevenness appears only in the photo, in reality everything is fine!

Additionally - lower right corner, upper left corner

Test picture

“Cheap and tasty!” ;)

It should be added that this method works almost perfectly on “medium” matrix sizes (32-40). On larger ones, towards one of the edges of the screen, there may be a noticeable drop in pixel response speed, which can cause slight blurring of the screen or a weakly expressed interlacing effect (which, however, is usually no longer visible from a short distance).

a little more detail, for those who are interested in the essence of the problem and the principle of its solution.

The pixels of the matrix are controlled by special microcircuits - control drivers (TAB COF IC). These microcircuits are often located on flexible cables (the so-called “ears”) soldered into the glass of the matrix, or on the matrix itself, so this part of the circuit is of little use for repair. It might look like this

The appearance of stripes is often a malfunction of one of the drivers; in our case, it is most likely “broken.”
Medium and large matrices have double the number of drivers; they are located on opposite sides of the screen. Essentially, they are connected in parallel to reduce the drop in pixel response speed towards the end of the line, due to the increase in resistance of relatively long conductors.
At the same time, for quite normal operation of a not very large matrix, drivers and one side are enough - this is what we use in the so-called “repair” described above ;). We simply disable (isolate) part of the drivers on one side, and the matrix continues to work on the working drivers of the other side.

Sometimes, for the same purposes, repairmen completely tear off these so-called “ears” on the matrix - the goal is the same, but not every matrix has these same “ears”, and it’s a little more difficult to get to them...
Good luck to everyone mood!;)

½ screen black or white

Every owner of modern television equipment can encounter the fact that the TV is half dark. Alas, it is the currently popular models that are unstable in the face of such a defect.

For LCD and LED, reasons for failure:

  • processor malfunctions;
  • failure of the motherboard;
  • poor cable contact;
  • broken capacitor;
  • mechanical influences;
  • wear and tear during operation;
  • manufacturing defects.

Plasma:

  • software failure;
  • matrix defect.

Self-diagnosis and repair

If problems such as stripes appear on half of the TV screen at the top or bottom, do not try to diagnose the cause of the problem yourself and look for ways to fix it through instructions and videos on the Internet. Individual models, even from the same manufacturer, can differ significantly in their design, and unqualified intervention will only aggravate the defect. It is much more profitable, including from a financial point of view, to seek help from professional engineers who have been repairing TV for many years. The technician has the knowledge, tools and experience necessary to restore TV functions.
