What is Android firmware?
Firmware is the version of the operating system that is preinstalled on the device.
Firmware update means installing a new version of software. This procedure is relevant for users of all Android devices. New firmware versions provide improved functionality and optimization. Devices work faster and consume less battery.
At the same time, users can check the release of a new version of the operating system either automatically or manually. In the first case, you need to use the ability to auto-search for new OS versions directly on your smartphone, and in the second, you need to upload the firmware manually from trusted sources using a browser, or install it via a PC.
Bootloader check
The first thing you need to do before flashing Android is to make sure that the problem is of a software nature. Press the Power button: if the phone shows at least some signs of life (clicks, the logo is on, the robot is frozen, an exclamation mark), then the bootloader is working. This means you can flash your smartphone, and it will continue to work.
Even if nothing happens when you press the power button, it’s too early to panic. Connect the device to your computer via USB and press the power button or the combination of “Power” and volume down keys.

If the computer sees the connected phone, it means it can be flashed - the main thing is to know how to do it yourself. If your smartphone does not show any signs of life, take it to a service center. The device probably does not turn on due to hardware problems, the elimination of which requires the intervention of a competent specialist.
What you will need
We have already noted that not all LG smartphone models receive over-the-air firmware updates. This means that device owners must use alternative methods to update the operating system.
In the case of gadgets from LG, the best option is to use the KDZ Updater utility. You can download it to your computer or laptop. This program for flashing Android LG firmware via PC is absolutely not demanding on resources. However, you should make sure that the battery charge on the device being flashed is at least 50%. Otherwise, the process may be interrupted at an important stage, and the device may become bricked.
Also, when flashing the gadget's firmware, you must ensure the presence of:
- working USB cable;
- drivers installed on the PC that allow it to see the connected device;
- firmware in KDZ or CIS format.
Once all conditions are met, you can begin the procedure.
Required Components and Tools
1. Computer or preferably laptop
2. Download archive KDZ Update.zip
3. Charged LG smartphone at least 50%
4. Installed LG drivers
5. Micro USB cable
6. Firmware for your smartphone in KDZ format, CIS firmware for the CIS countries and Russia, respectively
7. Uninstall other programs for LG (except driver
Firmware for LG smartphones using KDZ Updater
Before flashing an Android LG phone via a computer, you should download the current firmware version and a program that will allow you to upload a new version of the OS. There is no need to do anything with the firmware archive yet, but the KDZ Updater ZIP folder needs to be unpacked into the root directory of drive C. This will help you quickly operate with the capabilities of the software. Then enable USB debugging in the developer menu on your smartphone.
Now let's start the firmware process:
- Find msxml.msi among the unpacked files and run it.
- Turn off your smartphone, and then, while holding the Volume Down button, connect the device via USB to your computer. S/W Upgrade will appear on the screen. On some older smartphone models, you will have to remove the battery for this message to appear. The battery should then be reinserted.
- Open “Device Manager” on your PC (right-click on the “This PC” - “Device Manager” shortcut) and go to the “Modems” section. Disable LGE Mobile USB Modem, otherwise the firmware will not complete successfully.
- Run KDZ_FW_UPD.exe with administrator rights.
- In the program window that opens, in the Type field, specify the 3GQCT parameter, and in the Phonemode window, specify the DIAG command.
- In the KDZ file column, indicate the path to the downloaded archive with the firmware.
- Wait for the firmware process to complete and reboot your smartphone.
There is no need to perform any further manipulations with the gadget. The process of unpacking and installing files is automatic.
Data recovery
After updating your phone, you need to restore your data. Let's start with restoring contacts and calendar.
1. Open “Settings”;
2. Go to “Accounts and synchronization”;
3. Add a Google Account and enter its data;
4. Check the box “Auto-sync”;
5. After synchronization, make sure that the data is saved on your phone.
After this, we will make backup copies of the call log and SMS messages. For this:
1. Download and install the Call Logs Backup & Restore and SMS Backup & Restore applications from the Android Market again;
2. Launch the Call Logs Backup & Restore application and click Restore Call Logs;
3. Launch the SMS Backup & Restore application and click Restore.
Now all that remains is to back up the applications, which can be done using the ASTRO File Manager application.
1. Download and install the ASTRO File Manager application from the Android Market;
2. Launch the ASTRO File Manager application;
3. Go to “Menu” and click “Tool”;
5. Wait for the application saving process to complete.
Announcement
After all these steps, you will flash your smartphone. Updating smartphones, including LG GT540 Optimus firmware, is not mandatory, but it can save you from many problems that you currently have, because LG adds fixes to the update. We wish you good luck and safe firmware!
KDZ - flasher for LG
. If your smartphone does not want to boot normally, works poorly or does not work at all, you should try flashing it. Fortunately, almost all LG Android devices are flashed the same way. You can do this either using the KDZ utility or through the official LG Mobile Support Tool. We will now describe the sequence of actions.
This instruction applies only to GSM devices.
The CDMA firmware has not been tested against it. The method has some dangers. If a failure occurs during KDZ operation at the time of bootloader recording, only a service center can restore the device. We recommend choosing a good cable in advance, charging the battery in the laptop, disabling antiviruses and turning off other programs. It is better to use the cable that came with the device and place it in the rear socket of the computer. There may be a lack of power through the hub. Warning - The administration is not responsible for the actions you perform with the device. This material is provided for recommendation purposes and not as a guide to action.
Preparation
To get ready for work, you need to download several files:
- The official firmware itself in .KDZ format
Install all the drivers one by one and just in case, LG Mobile Support Tool. You will need it if the drivers are not installed (read in the last part of the article), for the usual update of the official firmware and restoration of the brick. Unzip the KDZ folder to the root of the system disk. Place the firmware next to it.
In KDZ you need to find and install the msxml.msi package using the standard method.
Now we put the phone into firmware mode. To do this, completely turn off the device or disconnect the battery. If it is not removable, press and hold the power button until the screen goes dark and the device vibrates twice.
Hold down BOTH volume buttons and power button. After a few seconds, a yellow image with a caption will appear. Emergency Mode
.
Now we connect the device to the PC and check if the drivers are installed.
If everything is fine, let's move on to the firmware. No - we restart the computer, try another port, cable. Without drivers, the firmware will not start! You can also try downloading them using the LG Mobile Support Tool. Read about it below.
Firmware
Drivers are installed. The phone is visible. It's time to launch KDZ. Go to the folder with the installed firmware and, as an administrator, open KDZ_FW_UPD.exe
. If it doesn't work, right-click on the file and set it to compatibility with Windows XP SP3. Flashing on Windows 8, 10 is not recommended. For your own safety, find a computer with Windows 7.
The KDZ start screen looks like this. Set the values circled correctly.
Now you need to select the firmware itself using this button.
Click Launch Software Update
and wait.
The utility may hang; the process sometimes lasts more than half an hour. It's better not to touch anything. Then progress bars will run across the screen, and you will see the treasured message about the end of the firmware FINISHED
. KDZ sometimes behaves erratically. In our case, she flew out immediately after the procedure was completed. Because of this, the image is different.
The phone will reboot itself and begin charging. Disconnect it from the cable, reconnect the battery and turn it on by holding the " Power"
"
If the device does not work, try entering Emergency Mode
and flashing it 2-3 more times.
LG Mobile Support Tool
utility also helps restore operation .
Problems that may occur when using KDZ Updater
KDZ Updater is a convenient utility that allows you to flash almost any model of LG smartphone without special skills. But errors may also occur in it.
It happens that the firmware process freezes in the Launch software update window, and the message “...param=...” appears. In such cases, you need to disconnect the gadget and repeat everything from the stage of connecting to the PC.
Another common mistake is unpacking KDZ. It occurs due to a faulty USB port or due to the fact that the smartphone is not connected to the main port that goes into the motherboard. In such cases, it is recommended to simply change the port through which the phone is connected to the PC.
Another problem is the inability to log into Bootloop. In this situation, you need to reset the gadget settings. To do this, go to the Recovery menu:
- With the device turned off, hold down the “Volume Down” and Power buttons.
- As soon as the LG logo appears, release Power.
- After half a second, press Power again and continue holding (copy-paste).
Then we perform wipe data/factory reset. After this, the process should start in standard mode.
Possible problems
1. The firmware process hangs...param=... - the process is frozen, repeat everything again (turn on, turn off, remove the battery
2. Error unpacking KDZ - the firmware cannot be flashed due to the inability to unpack the file. You can try connecting to a different USB port
3. Does not boot completely or Bootlap - turn off the smartphone, hold down the Volume down and Menu buttons, in the Recovery menu select wipe data/factory

Common errors and solutions to the problem
Let's look at common errors due to which you may not be able to install the Android update on your LG phone
Not enough device memory
Due to changes in Lollipop OS, you will need enough reserved memory to update the software. If you don't have enough user memory, an "Out of Memory" pop-up will appear until you free up enough memory. Deleting unused apps and clearing videos or photos can help free up device memory. If you dismiss the notification and do not free up space after 24 hours, the pre-update message will appear again until you free up the memory needed to complete the software update.
Update via LG Mobile Support Tool
It happens that the developer, for some unknown reason, has not released the next update over the air, but it is available on the company’s website. The program mentioned above is just for such cases. It appeared quite a long time ago and does not offer as many opportunities as its more recent counterparts. However, the “old lady” is still operational and often comes to the aid of owners of LG smartphones. We connect the device to a computer with the Mobile Support Tool installed, after which the program will recognize your device and start checking for an available software update. If the update is available, then click on the “Start update” button. Requests for confirmation may appear, to which we answer “Next”, “Proceed”, “Start” and so on, while carefully reading the text displayed on the monitor screen. Upon completion of the installation, a corresponding message indicating the end of the process and a “Exit” or “Finish” button will appear. After this, we can disconnect the mobile device from the PC and use it.
