From June 3, 2021, analogue television broadcasting will be switched off in Mari El, as well as in 56 other regions: the third wave of transition of federal television channels to digital will cover the republic completely. What do fans of TV series, TV news and shows need to know about this?

The transition to digital television broadcasting is carried out in accordance with the federal target program “Development of television and radio broadcasting in the Russian Federation for 2009-2018”. As Andrei Romanchenko, General Director of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Russian Television and Radio Broadcasting Network (RTRS), noted at one of the press conferences at MIA Rossiya Segodnya, 5,040 facilities were built for this task as part of the implementation of the federal target program in the country, which became the most large-scale terrestrial digital television project in the world.

Who has already tried the innovation?

The Tver region became the pilot region for the transition to digital. Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation Alexey Volin recalled this at a press conference. The experiment was considered successful.

“We carefully studied, including with the support of colleagues from Rossiya Segodnya, what was happening on social networks, and received a rather happy result: the number of negative reviews about the shutdown of analogue broadcasting in the Tver region amounted to 1.5% of the total information volume,” Wolin noted. – Our task is to ensure that a full transition to digital brings maximum pleasure to our residents and a minimum of difficulties and problems.

How to switch to digital?

This means that you should configure your TV to receive “digital”: if you have a meter antenna, then you need to buy a decimeter antenna, if you have an old TV, then you should buy a set-top box, and if the TV was purchased after 2012, then you just need to use the remote control reprogram channels.

The “Everything for Reception” section contains a list of 26,796 TV models from 121 manufacturers. Of these, 8,104 support the required digital standard. In addition, the section contains a list of 276 models of digital set-top boxes for old analog TVs.

Determining whether a receiver complies with a digital standard is easy. Another option is to search for the model you are interested in in the list of manufacturers, sorted alphabetically.

The website smotritsitru.rf also presents over 3 thousand stores with antennas and set-top boxes. RTRS previously announced the minimum prices for digital TVs and set-top boxes - no less than 6.8 thousand rubles and 1 thousand, respectively.

As Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Oleg Bocharov said at a press conference, the domestic industry is ready to produce up to 1 million TV set-top boxes per month from April 1 if there is a need for such production. “But, of course, we understand that this is a national project, and manufacturers should get involved only if there is a need for these products,” said the deputy minister. He noted that the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications have a number of tasks in this area. “The first thing is to not let the consumer be deceived in the information campaign, so that they do not receive a low-quality set-top box, explain that in addition to the set-top box, they also need a cable, an antenna... Put all this into a minimal package, and then together with Russian Post, in order to avoid speculation, to ensure a sufficient supply of products in regional warehouses,” Bocharov said.

According to Deputy General Director of Russian Post Yaroslav Mandron, the company focused its main attention on sales of TV set-top boxes in small towns and rural areas, where post offices are often the only points where you can purchase equipment for receiving a digital TV signal. For a year now in Mari El it has been possible to watch ten all-Russian mandatory channels in digital format, and from May 28, popular commercial channels have also become available in this format.

Alexander Komarov, director of the Antenna Service, told Y about what digital television is and how to switch to it.

— Alexander Vadimovich, first of all, tell us what your company does.

— The Antenna Service enterprise was created in 2004 to provide specialized assistance to homeowners with television equipment located in their homes. We provide maintenance and restoration of collective antennas based on agreements concluded with management companies. At some point, antenna equipment became outdated and no longer met modern requirements and the specifics of broadcasting in the region, and therefore people switched first to indoor antennas, then to cable television. Over the course of 10 years, we restored this entire system, we installed additional equipment, and today, almost any resident of the city can receive terrestrial TV. In new houses under construction, appropriate equipment is also installed; it is mandatory included in the project.

It may seem that nowadays no one uses community antennas anymore, but in fact this is not the case; there are a sufficient number of residents who do not want or cannot pay extra money for cable television. Our channels themselves are free in both analog and digital formats; we charge a subscription fee only for servicing the equipment. It amounts to a little more than 40 rubles per month.

— What is the difference between digital television and analogue television? And when did it appear in our city?

— Digital television is a modern alternative to the widespread analog television today. Its essence lies in the fact that a regular television frequency channel transmits not ordinary video and sound - an analog signal, but encoded digital information. Digital TV provides higher quality image transmission and is virtually free from interference. In addition, with the development of digital technologies, televisions have become different, and analogue broadcasting on them does not allow getting a good enough picture, because the image formats themselves are different.

In 2009, a federal program for the development of digital terrestrial television in Russia was adopted in order to cover with digital broadcasting not only large cities, but also districts and villages, where, in general, perhaps only two channels were received from a television tower. In Yoshkar-Ola, 20 channels are now available, for the rest of the republic so far 10. Now about 93 percent of the republic’s population is covered by the first package of digital channels. The first package, or multiplex, includes Channel One, “Russia-1”, “Russia-2”, “Russia-24”, “Russia-K”, NTV, TV-, OTR and three radio channels - “Mayak”, “ Radio Russia" and "Vesti FM". On May 28, a second multiplex was launched in the city, which includes such channels as Ren-TV, Zvezda, Domashny, STS, TV3, TNT, Muz-TV, SportPlus, Mir and the Spas TV channel.

— And what is needed in order to switch to digital format?

“The fact that we give a signal and it reaches the apartment is already a fait accompli.” But in order to watch digital channels, of course, you need the appropriate equipment. If the subscriber has a modern digital TV, then, in principle, nothing else is required. You just need to connect the collective antenna and set up digital channels. It must be a digital TV with a DVB-T2 tuner. In principle, televisions with such a receiver appeared only two years ago.

For those who still watch on old TVs, you need to purchase a DVB-T2 digital set-top box costing from 1000 rubles. A set-top box may also be required for digital TVs that were produced at the very beginning - they do not have the necessary built-in tuner. The set-top box can be purchased at any store, but our subscribers can also purchase it from our setup specialist, that is, we sell it with an installation service. Plus, if the technician finds any malfunctions - the antenna is not working well or something else, he can fix them.

— What should a city dweller do who has cable TV, but, in principle, does not need it and is thinking about switching to you?

- In any case, you need to understand what you are getting into. The first priority is to call our dispatch service at tel. 41-43-05 and explain the situation: I want to become your subscriber, do I have equipment in my house? Because there really are still houses that do not have antenna equipment. There was a special period when antennas were not installed, but only optical fiber was installed, and no one paid attention to this - there was access to television, but no one was interested in which one. There are not many such houses, maybe 10 - 20, because it was a very short period. In addition, we have established contact with the main construction contractors, and they installed equipment that meets the specifics of broadcasting. These houses have begun to appear to a greater extent now, because there are still people who want to watch terrestrial television.

If you have equipment in your house, then you just need to call a technician who will connect you to the collective antenna. If there is no equipment in the house, then you need to contact the management company and at a general meeting of residents decide on the need to install it.

— And the last question: are there any plans to expand the package of channels for terrestrial digital TV?

- No, these are all free channels. The federal program involves only these two multiplexes, although some of its channels may later change (depending on the television companies). Perhaps another package of ten channels will appear, but they will already be paid and even in HD format, i.e. high definition. But how and when this will happen, I cannot say.

In general, it is planned that analogue broadcasting will go away by 2021, but the timing varies, because they are looking at how digital television is developing in general. Yes, and you can’t disconnect your grandmother from the TV if she doesn’t want to switch to the digital format, for this you need to buy a new TV or set-top box, especially since analog shows well on old TVs. By the way, with analogue broadcasting, residents can watch 12 channels. But in essence, this time has been given for people to slowly switch to digital.
