Toshiba TVs, especially the older models, feature high screen resolutions, excellent stereo sound, and built-in modern features. Such devices have been delighting their customers with excellent quality and reliability for a long time. In this article we will look at the most popular Toshiba LCD TV models.
What types of settings are there on Toshiba TV and how to configure them
Any equipment initially has special factory settings. Such parameters do not always meet the necessary requirements, so users, as a rule, adjust TVs to suit themselves. The Toshiba TV has a certain list of settings that will need to be completed after purchasing the device.
- Channels.
- Time and date.
- Language.
- Format as well as image quality.
- Internet access.
- Smart TV.
- Automatic channel tuning.
- Cable TV.
In most cases, along with the equipment, the manufacturer provides detailed instructions with which you can easily make all the necessary settings. It is worth noting that the settings can be made either using a special remote control or keys that are located directly on the Toshiba TV itself.
Advantages and disadvantages
Japanese-made equipment is famous for the following advantages:
- high resolution quality - most products support HD 720p and higher;
- LED backlight makes the device look more stylish and modern, and also makes it easier to control the TV in poor lighting;
- The average image refresh rate is 100 Hz;
- a wide range of possible video signal formats - from 640x480 to 1360x768 pixels;
- good viewing angle - mostly 170 degrees horizontally and vertically;
- the likelihood of connecting to a computer instead of a monitor;
- built-in stereo sound;
- child lock function;
- connectors for connecting USB and all television signals;
- attractive design and slim body that will fit perfectly into a room of any size and interior.
Among the shortcomings, only low-power sound on some models is noted, not exceeding 10 W.
Setting up channels
Setting up channels is quite simple. This can be done either automatically or manually. Follow the instructions below and the process will not take much time and effort.
Automatic channel search
In order to automatically search for the desired channels, you will need to press the “” button on the remote control and go to the settings section.
If a TV was purchased that was manufactured after 2011, then Russia is left at the point where the country is selected. Next you need to go to the “Automatic Settings” section and confirm the action by clicking the “OK” button.
In some models, this process may have a different name - “Automatic Channel Scanning”. In the window that opens, click the “Start Search” button. After the search operation is launched, in a few minutes the TV will independently find all available channels and install them.
Manual channel search
To manually tune channels on Toshiba TVs, you need to go to the menu and press a certain button. Select “Manual setting” from the menu. In the window that opens, you will need to additionally set parameters to search for the required channels. then the action is confirmed.
In this case, scanning stops after each detected channel. In order for the search to continue further, it will need to be started again. The advantage of this option is that it is possible to initially configure separate parameters for each channel.
How to set up cable channels
Modern equipment has a significant advantage - you can automatically find all the necessary ones, including cable channels. To do this, you will need to complete the following steps.
- The device already contains templates for certain settings in its memory.
- After turning on the Toshiba TV, you need to go to the options section.
- Next, you select a specific template of settings that need to be performed.
- From the proposed list, the most suitable option in each individual case is selected.
Automatic tuning of cable channels is performed using a special button located on the remote control of the device. Due to this, the TV will be switched to a certain mode.
It is worth noting that if such a need arises, the required template with certain settings can be downloaded on the Internet without any problems. After that, they will be installed on your Toshiba TV in a matter of minutes.
Setting up satellite channels
After the satellite dish is connected, as well as the decoder, you will need to find digital channels. To do this, you need to go to the settings and select “Satellite (DVB-S)” in the automatic search. Then the search itself starts. Before the process is completed, you cannot turn off the TV.
Channel sorting and deletion
Toshiba TV settings require, in addition to searching for channels, also their further sorting. It is advisable not to skip this stage, because with its help you can make watching TV more comfortable. To do this, you need to open the main menu and go to “Settings”. Next, select the “Manual DTV setup” section, confirm the action next to the “Channels” item. It is worth noting that sections may have slightly different names, depending on the year in which the Toshiba TV was released.
Possible malfunctions and ways to eliminate them
The TV does not turn on, the mains fuse is blown
Check the serviceability of the mains filter elements (C801, R801, T801, C813, C814, C805, C806), switch S801, kinescope demagnetization system (R808, C811), rectifier (D801, C810). Everything is connected correctly, but the channels cannot be found.
It is worth checking if the cable is damaged. Additionally, clean the twisted pair cables that are located at the connection points with the equipment.
A search on the TV found only 10 channels.
This indicates that while searching for channels there were problems with the second multiplex. You can solve the problem by running manual setup.
We managed to detect the channels, but they always disappear or the picture starts to freeze.
This indicates poor signal reception quality. You need to purchase an amplifier that will help improve the signal.
How can I tell if my TV supports digital TV?
To do this, just familiarize yourself with the characteristics of the selected device. You can view the information in documents or find it on the Internet. Data on digital TV support is indicated in the supported standards section.
At first the channels showed well, but soon they stopped. What could be the reason?
The reason for this may be the presence of interference, for example due to antenna displacement. You need to check if it is securely fastened.
What is the cost of digital television?
Terrestrial TV is available to users completely free of charge. The cost of cable will depend on which operator the contract is signed with.
How many free channels can I connect to?
At least 20 regional television channels are available to users.
When will analog TV turn off?
At the moment, analog TV has already been switched off in some regions. The last stage is scheduled for October 14.
Toshiba TVs are very easy to set up, thanks to a simple and understandable menu. If any difficulties arise with the process, you can turn to specialists for help.

Appearance
The design is strict, there are no decorative elements. The screen is visually frameless; it looks like a monolithic surface, limited at the bottom by a narrow bar, and at the top and sides by a narrow border. The edging and trim are made of plastic with a black surface. The bar is convex and has a mirror-smooth surface, so with almost any arrangement of light sources in front of the TV, there will be a noticeable glare on the bar, which interferes with watching TV. Having displayed the image on the screen, you can see that in fact there are narrow margins between the outer borders of the screen and the display area itself (from the display area to the outer borders of the screen 9 mm at the top, 10 mm at the sides, and 17 mm at the bottom). The outer surface of the matrix is glossy, but when viewed perpendicularly, a slight matte blur of reflected objects is visible. There is no special anti-reflective coating. The screen surface looks black and feels hard to the touch.
The logo printed in silver paint on the left side of the bar reminds you of the TV brand.
At the bottom end in the center there is a transparent plastic overlay. It covers the IR receiver of the remote control and the status indicator. In standby mode, the indicator glows bright red, and in working mode it glows green, and alternately flashes red and green when the TV is in standby mode with an active schedule for recording a TV program.
Also on this pad there is a single button with which you can control the TV to a very limited extent without a remote control.
The standard stand consists of two legs cast from aluminum alloy with a tick, which are attached with screws to the bottom end. The surface of the legs is anodized and painted silver-gray. The legs rest on anti-slip rubber pads. The rigidity of the structure corresponds to the weight of the TV. The TV stands stable, without any visible tilt. The distance between the extreme points of the legs is 892 mm.
An alternative way to install a TV without using a standard stand is to mount the TV on a wall using a bracket for VESA 200x300mm mounting holes.
The rear panel in the upper part is made of a thin sheet of steel and has a durable matte black finish. The casing protruding back at the bottom and extending to the bottom end is made of black plastic with a matte surface.
The interface connectors are located in an open niche on the rear of the casing and are directed to the side. From the front, it is inconvenient to reach the connectors directed to the side. In the box with the TV we found two plastic sleeves with ears (two others were already screwed to the legs at the back), a plastic strip with holes, a screw and a screw. Apparently, all this can be used for laying cables, but it is not clear what is attached and where, since we did not have an installation manual.
Air for cooling the electronics passes through grilles at the bottom end of the case and at the top of the casing at the back.
The TV is completely passively cooled. Behind the grilles at the bottom end are built-in speakers with elongated diffusers.
We received the TV in a pre-sale version and was packed in a non-original box.
Switching
The included power supply cable (length 1.6 m) is non-detachable.
The table with characteristics at the beginning of the article gives an idea of the communication capabilities of the TV. Most connectors are standard and full-size. The exception is the connector for input of composite video signal and stereo sound in analog form, which is a socket for a four-pin minijack. However, the manufacturer did not forget to include an appropriate adapter for three RCAs with the TV.
A number of connectors, especially dual USB ones, are placed rather crampedly, which can cause some inconvenience. At least basic support for HDMI control works: the TV turns on itself when the player is turned on and the disc starts playing, the player also turns on when the TV is turned on, and the player turns off when the TV is turned off.
In Cast mode, you can transfer a copy of the mobile device screen and sound to your TV via Wi-Fi. In principle, if you have a modern mobile device and fast Wi-Fi, you can watch a movie this way - the delay is not very large, frames are dropped infrequently, additional compression artifacts are introduced, but you can live with this. However, in this particular case, the picture periodically froze and the sound disappeared, which discouraged any desire to watch a movie in this way.
Remote control and other control methods
The remote control body is made of black plastic. The lower part of the remote control has a matte surface, and for some reason the upper part is made glossy, as a result, fingerprints are very visible on it, and it looks untidy. The button labels are quite large and contrasting. There are a lot of buttons themselves, perhaps even too many, but, as practice shows, using such remote controls is still more convenient than laconic ones with a couple of buttons. Note the dedicated buttons for launching Netflix, YouTube applications and the built-in multimedia player. The remote control works via the IR channel. The standard remote control does not have coordinate input functions, such as a gyroscopic mouse. The limited capabilities of the remote control in the case of such a “smart” TV can be compensated for by connecting a keyboard and mouse to the TV. These input devices work over USB even through a USB hub, freeing up scarce USB ports for other tasks. The mouse in the TV interface itself does not work, the cursor appears in the Internet browser. Scrolling with a wheel is supported. The delay in moving the mouse cursor relative to the movement of the mouse itself is small. We haven't figured out how to change the layout for the connected keyboard. In most cases, on a physical keyboard you can only type text in Cyrillic, but on YouTube, input is in Latin letters. The keyboard can be used to navigate the TV interface. It was not possible to connect the keyboard via Bluetooth, but it was possible to connect the mouse. It should be noted that in general the interface is well optimized for using only the included remote control, that is, connecting a keyboard and mouse is generally not necessary.
In addition, the TV can be controlled via a mobile device using the proprietary RemoteNow application for Android or iOS (the TV and mobile device must be on the same network). From the application you can turn on the TV while it is in standby mode. This software does not have particularly advanced functionality, but it can replace the remote control.
The software platform for this TV is an operating system based on the Linux kernel. The custom shell Vidaa U3.0 is used. The main page of the interface is a horizontal ribbon of square icons - displaying a list of applications, selecting a source, accessing multimedia content on media and the network, going to settings and quickly calling a number of applications.
Advertising in the form of recommended content may be displayed at the bottom. Yes, yes, first the user pays for the TV, and then he is shown advertising that cannot be turned off. The background for the title page is an image from the current source, that is, in fact, there is no page as such. There is an application and content store.
The selection of applications is not very large, especially in comparison with Android TV, and after filtering based on Russian language support, about twenty applications remain. The built-in Internet browser did a good job of displaying the main page of iXBT.com. True, pages are rendered at 1920×1080 resolution.
Let us note that in general we have no complaints about the stability of the shell. The TV responds to commands from the remote control with virtually no delay, and the animation in the interface elements is moderate. It’s convenient that there are separate buttons to return to the previous menu level and quickly exit the menu altogether. The menu with TV settings occupies most of the screen, the inscriptions in it are readable. There is a Russified version of the interface. The quality of the translation is good, and the most important thing is that the settings in most cases change exactly what you expect based on their name.
Directly when adjusting image parameters, only the name of the setting, a slider and the current value or a list of options are displayed on the screen, which makes it easier to assess the impact of this setting on the image, while the settings with sliders are moved through the up and down arrows.
Some inconvenience is that the lists in the menu are not looped, so when you get to the last item, you often have to rewind the list back to the beginning or go up a level and enter the list again. The Menu button displays a context menu on the screen, from where you can quickly go to setting/viewing current parameters or to the main menu with settings.
Apparently the TV should come with a printed user manual. We didn't get it, but on the manufacturer's website we found a manual in Russian in the form of a PDF file. It is only 27 pages, but the main points are discussed in sufficient detail.
Playing multimedia content
In our superficial testing of multimedia content playback, we limited ourselves to a number of files launched mainly from external USB drives. Multimedia content sources can also be UPnP (DLNA) servers. We tested 2.5″ hard drives, an external SSD and regular flash drives. After not being used for a long time and in the standby mode of the TV itself, the hard drives turned off. Note that the TV supports reading and writing USB drives with FAT32 and NTFS file systems. Support for EXT4 is also announced. There were no problems with Cyrillic names of files and folders. The TV player detects all files in folders, even if there are a lot of files on the disk (more than 100 thousand).
We have confirmed the TV's ability to display raster graphics files in JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP formats, including as a slide show with transition effects and background music. Images measuring 3840 x 2160 pixels are rendered pixel-to-pixel in true 4K resolution, but with a slight reduction in horizontal color clarity.
In the case of audio files, many common and not so common formats are supported, at least AAC, MP3, OGG, WMA (and 24-bit), M4A, WAV and FLAC (the extension must be FLAC). Tags are supported at least in MP3, WMA and WMA (Russian must be in Unicode) and cover pictures in MP3.
For video files, a large number of different containers and codecs are supported (up to H.265 with 10 bits and UHD resolution at 60 fps with HDR), several audio tracks in various formats (at least AAC, AC3, MP2, MP3, PCM, DTS and WMA), external and built-in text subtitles (Russian must be in Windows-1251 encoding or Unicode). There are a lot of subtitle settings.
DVD images play only by file, no menus, etc., but files from BD images (MTS and M2TS containers) could not be played. Also, the TV does not play video from AVI, DivX and MKV containers in the DivX 3 and MPEG4 ASP codecs (if not with ID XviD), and OGM container files are not displayed at all in the file list. MPEG1 VCD and MPEG2 SVCD/KVCD files do not grow to fit the display area.
However, if we limit ourselves to modern and more or less common video file formats, then with a very high probability the TV will play them. Supports playback of HDR video files (HDR10, DolbyVision and HLG; WebM, MKV, MP4, TS containers; HEVC (H.265) and VP9 codecs), and in the case of files with 10 bits per color, according to a visual assessment of shade gradations greater than 8 -bit files. Thus, this TV has at least nominal support for HDR, nominal, since the maximum brightness is still not very high, and the color gamut is not wide. An example of an HDR content source is the pre-installed YouTube application, in which we were able to watch videos in 4K resolution with HDR and even 60 fps.
Test videos to determine the uniformity of frame alternation helped to reveal that when playing video files, the TV adjusts the screen refresh rate to the frame rate in the video file, but only by 50 or 60 Hz, so files with 24 frames per second are played back with alternating frame durations of 2:3. In the standard video range (16-235) all shade gradations are displayed. The maximum bitrate of video files, at which there were no artifacts yet, when playing from USB drives was 160 Mbit/s (H.264, https://jell.yfish.us/), via Wi-Fi (network in the 5 GHz range) - 120 Mbit/s, over a wired Ethernet network - 80 Mbit/s. In the last two cases, the media server of the Asus RT-AC68U router was used. Statistics on the router show that the reception/transmission speed over Wi-Fi is 866.7 Mbit/s, that is, the TV has an 802.11ac adapter installed.
Standard tools for content playback can display dynamic (video files) and static (pictures/photos) images in true resolution 3840x2160. All other programs display images in a resolution of 1920x1080, but apparently some of them (like YouTube) can output video in a true resolution of 3840x2160 using hardware decoding tools.
Sound
The volume of the built-in speaker system can be considered sufficient for a typical-sized living room. There are high and mid frequencies, and also a little bit of low frequencies. The stereo effect is noticeable, although it is not very pronounced. The sound clearly comes from below. There are parasitic resonances of the housing, especially noticeable at certain frequencies. However, in general, taking into account the class of the TV, the quality of the built-in acoustics can be considered acceptable.
Let's compare the frequency response of this TV with the frequency response of two high-class TVs (obtained using a sound level meter when playing an audio file with pink noise, measuring SPL in 1/3 octave intervals):
It can be seen that this TV does not have the lowest frequencies, the highest ones are not enough, so the middle is protruded and there are clearly resonant peaks. The volume is not very high (72 dBA for pink noise). We also present the frequency response obtained using the REW (Room EQ Wizard) program:
The resolution is better, but the character coincides with the previous graph. We will also present a graph with the coefficient of nonlinear distortion, we will leave it without comments for now:
The TV does not have a headphone output; if necessary, you will have to connect them via Bluetooth.
Working with video sources
Cinema operating modes were tested when connected to a Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player. An HDMI connection was used. With this source, the TV supports 480i/p, 576i/p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p signals at 24/50/60 Hz. Colors are correct, and given the type of video signal, luminance clarity is high, but color clarity is always below par. In the standard video range (16-235) all shade gradations are displayed. In the case of a 1080p signal at 24 fps, frames are output in a 2:3 sequence.
In most cases, the TV does not do a good job of converting interlaced video signals into progressive images, so it is better to connect this TV to a source that itself does the conversion to a progressive signal. When scaling from low resolutions and even in the case of interlaced signals and dynamic images, partial smoothing of object boundaries is performed. The video noise reduction function works very well, without leading to artifacts in the case of dynamic images.
When connected to a computer via HDMI, we received image output in a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels with a frame rate of up to 60 Hz inclusive. Although the signal has high native color clarity (output in RGB or component mode with 4:4:4 color encoding), the actual image output on the TV screen is slightly reduced in color clarity in the horizontal and vertical directions.
Under Windows 10, output in HDR mode to this TV is possible by selecting the appropriate options in the display settings. At a resolution of 4K and 50/60 Hz, the output is in 8 bits per color mode, supplemented by dynamic color mixing, apparently using a video card at the hardware level. At 30 Hz - 12 bits per color (dynamic expansion to 10 bits is performed by the TV itself):
Playing test videos with 10-bit color and smooth gradients showed that the noticeability of transitions between shades was much less noticeable than with simple 8-bit output without HDR. The 10-bit output is obtained using dynamic color mixing, as a result, flickering areas are visible in some images, it’s good that this is rare and is noticeable only in a static picture. Colors in HDR content are close to expected, although a little on the pale side. The maximum brightness recorded in tests in HDR mode does not differ from that in SDR mode.
TV tuner
This model, in addition to the satellite tuner, is equipped with a tuner that receives analog and digital signals from broadcast and cable broadcasts. The quality of reception of digital channels on a decimeter antenna mounted on the wall of the building (almost direct visibility in the direction of the TV tower in Butovo, located 14 km away) was at a high level - it was possible to find TV channels in all three multiplexes (30 in total, plus 3 radio channel).
There is good support for the electronic program guide - you can see what exactly is on the current and other channels, program viewing or recording of a program or series, etc.
There is a list of favorite channels. The channel list can be written to a USB drive and vice versa, downloaded from it. Switching between channels happens literally in 1 s, sometimes it takes more time, up to 4.5 s. There is a function for recording digital TV channels in time shift mode.
It is noteworthy that for recording functions you can use a USB drive with a supported file system without the need for special preparation or formatting. Teletext and subtitle output in particular are supported.
Microphotographs of the matrix
The identified screen characteristics suggest that this TV has a *VA type matrix installed. Microphotographs do not contradict this (the black dots are dust on the camera sensor):
White field
Subpixels of three colors (red, green and blue) are divided into four areas with domains in different orientations. Such a device is, in principle, capable of providing good viewing angles, which is facilitated by variations in the orientation of the LC in the domains. To ensure a wide dynamic range in brightness, some subpixels are turned off or their brightness is greatly reduced as the brightness of the output hue decreases. For example, this is what a white, gray and dark gray field looks like at not very high magnification:
White field
Gray field
Dark gray field
As a result, if you sit at a distance at which 4K resolution differs from Full HD, many shades look “loose” with a visible mesh structure. If you sit further away, this grid is not visible, but the advantage from 4K resolution almost disappears.
Focusing on the screen surface revealed chaotically located microdefects of the surface, which are responsible for the matte properties themselves (which, remember, are very weakly expressed):
Note that there is no visible “crystalline effect” (microscopic variation in brightness and hue) in this case.
Brightness and power consumption measurements
This TV appears to be equipped with direct LED backlighting that does not have independent zone control. Unfortunately, dynamic brightness control always works - in dark images the backlight brightness decreases. Therefore, brightness measurements were carried out at 16 points of the screen on a checkerboard field with alternating black and white fields. Contrast was calculated as the ratio of the brightness of the white and black fields at the measured points.
Parameter | Average | Deviation from the average | |
min., % | max., % | ||
Black field brightness | 0.070 cd/m² | −20 | 18 |
White field brightness | 400 cd/m² | −20 | 21 |
Contrast | 5700:1 | −5,3 | 11 |
Hardware measurements showed that the contrast is very high even for this type of matrix. The uniformity of white and black fields is low, but the uniformity of contrast is good. Apparently, the unevenness is mainly due to the unevenness of the backlight. On both white and black fields, you can notice the variation in the brightness of the illumination over the screen area:
White field
Black field
But in fact, the unevenness of the white field is not noticeable, and due to the high contrast and dynamic brightness adjustment, the unevenness of the black field can only be noticed when the black field is displayed on the entire screen in complete darkness and after the eyes have adapted, in real images and in a home environment the unevenness Black highlights are almost impossible to see.
There is no particular benefit from the function of dynamically adjusting the backlight brightness, but changing the brightness can be annoying. The graph below shows how brightness changes (vertical axis) when switching from a black field (after 5 seconds of exposure) to white for three settings for the dynamic backlight brightness adjustment function (dependencies are smoothed for clarity):
As you can see, even with the value Off. the function still works, that is, the consumer is deliberately misled.
The table below shows the brightness of the white field in the entire screen when measured in the center of the screen and the power consumption (no USB devices connected, sound off, Wi-Fi active, settings values provide maximum brightness):
Setting value Screen backlight | Brightness, cd/m² | Electricity consumption, W |
50 | 346 | 108 |
25 | 265 | 88,3 |
0 | 72 | 45,4 |
In standby mode, an untuned TV consumes about 0.3 W. After setting up Wi-Fi, consumption increases to 0.9, but it can be turned on using the mobile application. In standby mode with an active schedule for recording a TV program, consumption is 23 W. The TV turns on from standby mode in about 5 seconds, and if the quick start function is disabled, then in 14 seconds.
At maximum brightness, the image will not appear faded even in a brightly lit room. Whereas in complete darkness, the minimum brightness may seem too high.
The brightness of the backlight is controlled using PWM with a frequency of 180 Hz. Below is the dependence of brightness on time, the numbers are the values of the Screen backlight setting:
Flicker is not detected during normal TV viewing, but still, at medium and low brightness, the presence of backlight brightness modulation can be detected during rapid eye movement and in the “pencil” test for the stroboscopic effect.
The heating of the TV from the front can be assessed from the following image from an IR camera, obtained after long-term operation at maximum brightness in a room with a temperature of approximately 24 °C:
It can be seen that the main source of heat is 12 points at the bottom of the frame. Apparently, this TV uses back lighting rather than edge lighting, which is not divided into independently controlled zones.
Determining response time and output latency
Black-white-black response time is 17.8 ms (11.3 ms on + 6.5 ms off). The average response time for transitions between halftones (from hue to hue and back) is 14.6 ms. There is a slight “overclocking” of the matrix, which almost does not lead to artifacts. Below are graphs of halftone transitions between shades of 0%, 50%, 70% and 100% (vertical - brightness, horizontal - time):
In general, from our point of view, this matrix speed is quite enough even for playing dynamic games.
For a clear idea of what such a matrix speed means in practice and what artifacts overclocking leads to, we present a series of images taken using a moving camera. Such pictures show what a person sees if he follows an object moving on the screen with his eyes. The description of the test is given here, the page with the test itself is here. Recommended settings were used (motion speed 960 pixels/s), shutter speed 1/15 s.
It is clear that there are artifacts (a light trace behind the plate), but their visibility is low.
We determined the total output delay from switching video buffer pages to the start of displaying the image on the screen. As a result, when connecting via HDMI, the image output delay in the case of a signal of 3840×2160 and 60 Hz was about 50 ms. The latency value is quite high. The delay is practically not felt when using the TV as a monitor for working on a PC, but in the case of very dynamic games, such a delay will negatively affect performance.
Color rendering quality assessment
To assess the nature of the increase in brightness, we measured the brightness of 256 shades of gray (from 0, 0, 0 to 255, 255, 255) when connected to a PC in RGB mode at 3840×2160 and 60 Hz, the Gamma setting parameter in the TV settings is 2.2, and Contrast = 44. The graph below shows the increase (not absolute value!) in brightness between adjacent halftones:
The increase in brightness is on average more or less uniform, and almost every subsequent shade is brighter than the previous one, except for the first shade of gray, which is no different in brightness from black:
The approximation of the resulting gamma curve gave a value of 2.17, which is close to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the approximating power function:
To assess the quality of color rendering, we used the i1Pro 2 spectrophotometer and the Argyll CMS software package (1.5.0).
The color gamut is close to the boundaries of the sRGB color space:
Below is the spectrum for the white field (white line), superimposed on the spectra of the red, green and blue fields (lines of the corresponding colors):
This spectrum with a relatively narrow peak of blue and wide humps of green and red is typical for monitors that use white LED backlighting with a blue emitter and a yellow phosphor.
The graphs below show the color temperature at various parts of the gray scale and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE parameter) when choosing the Standard (brightest mode) option for the Color Tone setting and after correcting the color balance with the gain settings of the three primary colors in the case of the Warm option (values 0, −4 and −6 to enhance red, green and blue):
The range closest to black can be ignored, since color rendering in it is not so important, and the error in measuring color characteristics is high. Selecting a different profile and manual correction on average reduced ΔE and brought the color temperature closer to the standard 6500 K, while ΔE on most of the gray scale became less than 3 units, which is very good, and both parameters change little from hue to hue on a significant part of the gray scale - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance.
Measuring viewing angles
To find out how screen brightness changes when deviated from perpendicular to the screen, we took a series of measurements of black, white and grayscale brightness at the center of the screen over a wide range of angles, deflecting the sensor axis in the vertical, horizontal and diagonal directions.
Reducing brightness by 50% of maximum value:
Direction | Angle, degrees |
Vertical | −29/+30 |
Horizontal | −34/+33 |
Diagonal | −32/+32 |
In terms of brightness reduction, viewing angles are not very wide. The brightness of the black field increases when deviating from perpendicular to the screen, but only to about 0.14% of the maximum brightness of the white field and only with a large deviation. This is an excellent result. The contrast in the angle range ±82° for two directions is significantly higher than 10:1 and only for the diagonal direction it is lower, but still does not fall beyond the 10:1 mark.
To quantify the change in color rendering, we performed colorimetric measurements for white, gray (127, 127, 127), red, green and blue, as well as light red, light green and light blue fields in the full screen using a setup similar to that , which was used in the previous test. Measurements were carried out in the angle range from 0° (the sensor is directed perpendicular to the screen) to 80° in steps of 5°. The obtained intensity values were recalculated into deviation ΔE relative to the measurement of each field at a perpendicular position of the sensor relative to the screen. The results are presented below:
You can choose a deviation of 45° as a reference point. The criterion for maintaining the correctness of colors can be considered a value of ΔE less than 3. From the graphs it follows that when viewed from an angle, at least the primary colors change slightly, but the halftones change significantly, which is expected for a VA* type matrix and is its main disadvantage.
conclusions
The Toshiba 50U5069 TV has a modern, strict and visually frameless design, which is slightly spoiled by the glare bar at the bottom of the screen. The TV runs on a proprietary operating system, so the user is limited in the choice of applications. However, several popular applications in Russia have already been installed, and the multimedia player has advanced functionality. Thanks to a matrix with high contrast and acceptable color reproduction, this TV will be a good choice for watching movies and TV series, but it will be worse for dynamic games due to a significant output delay. It is strictly not recommended to use this display device as a large monitor for working on a PC for a number of reasons.
