How to watch satellite channels without a subscription fee using a Rainbow TV antenna

DTV technology is a new television broadcasting format through which your favorite channels can be viewed in high quality picture and sound. Compared to analog television, there are other advantages, one of the main ones is protection from interference. To relay a “digital” signal over the same distance, less power is required to transmit the signal. Reducing the spectrum allows you to increase the number of channels available in one frequency range. Until recently, many subscribers only watched programs in analogue format, so not everyone knows how to set up DTV channels on their TV. The following recommendations will help you understand this issue.

Setting up DTV channels

Depending on the brand and model of the TV receiver, the digital broadcast frequency settings may differ slightly, but the general principle remains the same. Owners of modern TVs do not need to purchase additional equipment, including an antenna, if they have a decimeter device.

After connecting the antenna to the receiver, you can start searching for digital channels. Let's look at this process using Samsung TVs as an example:

  1. You need to go to the main Settings Menu and select “Broadcast”.
  2. The next step is to select the “Automatic search” command.
  3. After clicking the “Start” button, the device will begin searching for available programs.
  4. You will need to select the signal source from the “Antenna” and “Cable” options. The last point is suitable for those who are connected to any cable television provider.
  5. After selecting the antenna, subdirectories of TV programs will be offered; it is recommended to select the one that contains digital channels.
  6. Start the “Scan” mode.

Setting up digital TV on the receiver is done in two ways: through automatic or manual search. In the first case, the user must make a minimum of effort and spend a little time. If the automatic search does not bring results, it is recommended to search for available channels manually.

The following will show how to do this using the example of LG TV receivers:

  1. On the remote control you need to press the “Settings” button.
  2. In the window that opens, select “Channels” and activate the “Manual search” command.
  3. In the new window, in the first line you will need to specify the “Digital TV” parameter.
  4. Specify the frequency and channel number corresponding to a specific region.
  5. A window will open showing two scales. One of them will tell you about the signal level, and the second - about the quality.
  6. To start searching for channels, you need to click on the “Add” button.
  7. TV channels from one of the multiplexes will appear. To add a second package, perform the same steps.

After completing the process, it is recommended to save the result obtained, otherwise, after starting the TV again, you will have to repeat the manipulations described above.

Without Daryalova

Having bought Daryal TV, the Swedes removed the founder of the channel from the air and from the name.
The recipe for successful television in Russia, according to the management of the Swedish media holding Modern Times Group (MTG), is simple: entertainment programs, aggressive marketing and no amateur activities. And even such an outsider as Daryal TV will do as a platform for an experiment.

.

MTG began looking closely at Russia six years ago. But he risked entering our market only in May last year, purchasing a 75% stake in Daryal TV. “We were looking for a small TV channel that could be rebuilt in accordance with our business concept,” says Igors Mortensen, vice president of Viasat Broadcasting (a division of the Swedish holding, see background). “It’s less expensive and leaves more room for experimentation.” The founders of the channel, Natalya Daryalova and her father Arkady Vainer, retained a 25% stake.

The transaction amount has not yet been disclosed by both parties. What is known is that MTG got a channel that accounts for a measly 0.04% of total television advertising, and a regional broadcast network covering about 50 cities. The technical coverage of Daryal TV, that is, the absolute number of people capable of receiving a signal, at the time of purchase of the channel was 13–14 million people, which is almost five times less than, for example, STS or Ren-TV.

100 people had to be removed

The reform of Daryal TV began with structural changes. The new CEO of DTV, Mart Luik, created two departments in the company - sales (involved in the sale of advertising time) and marketing - and reorganized three old ones: distribution, software and technical. Luik invited people from outside to head them, while firing two-thirds of the 150 people of the previous staff.

The most radical changes have occurred in those departments that are directly responsible for the content of the channel. “Previously, all programs on Daryal TV were made through our own efforts,” says Luik. – We specifically moved the production of programs outside the company. This scheme improves operational efficiency and the quality of the product itself.” Foreign-produced programs on DTV now occupy 60% of the volume. The remaining 40% is made in Russia. Of these, about 70% are made to order. So, in total, the channel is filled with only 10% of its own programs.

Luik does not disclose the amounts spent on the purchase of programs, noting only that by placing orders externally, you can save 25 - 30%. According to the top manager of a large production company, whom Ko’s correspondent contacted for comment, the rights to show a Western feature film now cost $1,000–$20,000, and one episode of a Russian TV series costs $10,000–$25,000.

Fundamental changes also affected the broadcasting network. “The channel’s previous shareholders and managers never decided what it should be,” says Luik. – This made it difficult to sell advertising. We immediately identified the target audience. These are predominantly men from 18 to 49 years old.”

Thus, Natalya Daryalova’s “family” channel gave way to a purely entertainment channel, without politics or serious news. “All the channels that are part of the MTG holding are entertainment only,” explains Mortensen. – In Scandinavia, we make money, for example, on sports channels. In Russia, with the growth of the local media market, other formats can also be commercially attractive, but the entertainment television format is closer to MTG than others.”

Without a face

The final transition from “Daryalova’s channel” to “commercial television” is symbolized by a change of name. In April, the new owners “reduced” Daryal TV to DTV and completely abandoned the previous broadcast content. They considered it inappropriate from a commercial point of view to build a channel around one person, even a talented one. “The viewer either loves this presenter or he doesn’t,” argues Luik, “and since it’s still impossible to please everyone, by promoting only one presenter, we automatically cut off half of the potential audience.” The new “face of the channel,” according to its current management, should be young, still unknown presenters. Now there are ten of them, and by the end of the year there will be twice as many.

It is the “face of the channel” that is the most important competitive advantage in the current market situation. “In a situation where more and more TV channels (TNT, STS, Ren-TV, TV-3, NTV) declare virtually the same audience aged 18-49 or 16-45 years old as a priority, it is very important to maintain a fairly narrow target audience focus and create a unique brand,” says TNT Marketing Director Alexander Kurnosov. “Now STS is consistently following this path, not to mention the highly specialized MTV and Muz-TV.”

A few months before the arrival of MTG, there were practically no new programs on the Daryal TV channel - there were reruns of the program “On Everyone’s Lips” with Natalya Daryalova and old Soviet films. Of the twenty programs of Daryal TV, Luik left only three, but they also underwent changes. The actions of the Swedish shareholders even became the cause of a conflict between Daryalova and the new management. However, none of the ideas of the founder of the channel are ever used on DTV. But there was no place for the former “face of the channel” on the new broadcast. Daryalova herself now lives mainly in America and does not participate in the management of the channel.

How to cover a country

Simultaneously with structural and personnel changes, Mart Luik began to build a regional broadcast network. Since the beginning of the year, MTG has invested about $2.5 million in regional projects and plans to spend another $5 million - $6 million before December. The first results are evidenced by a threefold (according to Gallup TV) increase in the audience from January to June - from 0.12% to 0 .35%.

By the end of the year, Luik plans to expand the regional broadcast network to 230 cities and reach an audience of 50 million people. And top managers of DTV hope to bring the channel to self-sufficiency within three years, relying not least on the rapid growth of the advertising market. For example, this year DTV management plans to earn about $3 million from advertising (out of $600 million in total advertising revenues on television).

The total investment in creating a competitive channel with all-Russian coverage is estimated by experts at $50 million - $60 million. Luik agrees with this figure and clarifies that two-thirds of the funds should go specifically to the development of the regional network, including the purchase of shares in local television companies, the purchase of equipment, promotion and work with personnel. The remaining funds should be spent approximately equally on the development of sales (including channel advertising) and the purchase of programs.

However, it will not be easy for the Swedes to ensure further growth in their ratings.
After all, almost all strong regional broadcasters have already concluded agreements with leading television networks (plus TVS is now increasing efforts to restore its network). Therefore, DTV will either have to be content with not the best distribution conditions, or develop new frequencies and participate in competitions. In Moscow, where the technical capabilities for inclusion in cable networks have been almost completely exhausted, newcomers face increased connection costs. If DTV manages to cope with these difficulties, in just six months or a year, according to one of the television workers, the rest of the players will have to take this channel into account. What is MTG?
The Swedish media holding Modern Times Group MTG AB operates in seven business areas. Viasat Broadcasting, part of its structure, owns public and pay TV channels in nine countries. The company is represented on the radio market by seven radio networks in five countries. The New Media division owns three Internet portals. The company also publishes business press, subtitling and dubbing films and television programs for different countries, and produces and sells television programs. And the company Modern Interactive, part of the holding, develops the direction of teleshopping, e-commerce and is engaged in logistics. MTG's sales in 2001 were $611 million, net profit was $12 million.

In January 2002, MTG acquired a 36% stake in StoryFirst Communications, which owns 75% of the first profitable commercial television company.
