Review of the smart monitor Samsung Smart Monitor M7 (S32AM700UI)

Samsung UE55AU7500 is a TV from the cheapest seventh series of the Korean manufacturer Samsung in the 4K segment of 2021. This is a series of TVs with Crystal Processor 4K processor. However, the TV presented here is a receiver of the 2020 TU7500 series.

Above all, the AU7500 wants to convince with its good price-performance ratio. Therefore, you will have to give up some features that are reserved for more expensive models. In the Samsung UE55AU7500U 4K HDR review below, we’ll try to figure out what are the shortcomings of the AU75 series compared to its own competitors, such as the AU9000.

Design

Despite the large diagonal (32 inches), the Samsung Smart Monitor M7 looks relatively compact and elegant: it has very small frames around the screen and a fairly thin body. The very small leg and thin metal base also add an airy and light feel to this monitor, plus this design takes up very little space on the desktop and does not interfere with the location of the keyboard/mouse, and the flat surface of the base allows it to be used for storing small items.

The back side is made of matte plastic with a relief “ribbed” surface, which does not leave fingerprints. The video connectors are located in a recess at the bottom of the case and are oriented downward; here you can find two HDMI 2.0 ports and one USB Type-C. Above them is a USB hub with two USB 2.0 inputs (the third port is a service port). To organize the connected cables, there is a rubber “strap” that can be used to secure them at the back of the leg.

If desired, the monitor can be mounted on the wall: above the leg there is a VESA-compatible mount (100x100).

Samsung AU7500 review

Design

Even though the body is made entirely of plastic, the AU7500 looks extremely modern and durable. A narrow frame in titanium gray complements the design. Thanks to its shallow depth and slim design, it is also ideal for wall mounting. Moreover, most of the cables are routed to the side.

Therefore, they are easily accessible for wall mounting. The Slim V-Type Center Low is quite stable. However, if you push the screen, the TV may wobble slightly. Cable management is very easy. They can be attached to the center stand. This installation will create the impression of neatness in the living room.

Smart TV Tizen 6.0

Thanks to the Tizen 6.0 operating system, the Samsung UE55AU7500 TV offers many services and media libraries installed from the factory. In particular, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Disney + are already installed in advance. If your preferred app is not available, you can simply download it from the App Store.

There are no voice assistants. Not only are there no assistants from Amazon and Google, but also the native Bixby Assistant. Dual tuner is not available and USB recording function is not supported either. The remote control allows you to control multiple devices. However, it is not convenient when working with a browser.

Software platform

Immediately after turning it on, it becomes clear that the Samsung Smart Monitor M7 is more of a TV in a monitor form factor. It runs the company's proprietary SMART shell, and when you turn it on for the first time, it prompts you to log in to your Samsung account. After the initial setup, the familiar Tizen OS home screen appears on the screen, with a ribbon of installed applications, video source selection, settings, etc. - in general, any owner of a modern Samsung TV will feel “at home”; you can watch YouTube, Netflix and other popular streaming services on this monitor “offline”, without turning on the PC.

Accordingly, the Samsung Smart Monitor M7 does not have the usual on-screen menu, which is used to configure its operating parameters - instead, this model has a fairly standard television settings menu, in which you can select one of five video modes, adjust the sound of the built-in acoustics, enable the game mode, configure connected external devices, change Apple AirPlay settings, update firmware, etc.

To control the monitor, a “television” approach is used: the Samsung Smart Monitor M7 has no hardware menu navigation buttons, except for the power button located on the bottom center, under the Samsung logo (you can also use it to change the volume and switch to another video input ). The main control method is the remote control - well known to us from the TVs of this company, Magic Remote. It is convenient and does not cause any complaints, but as an additional option it would be nice to also have a joystick or hardware buttons on the body, like other desktop monitors.

Functionality of Samsung Smart Monitor M7

In addition to the standard HDMI connection, this monitor can be connected to laptops via USB Type-C (in this case, the laptop will also be charged - the power of the port is 65 W). The Samsung Smart Monitor M7 also supports wireless connectivity using AirPlay 2 and Wireless DeX; The first option allows you to use the monitor as an external screen for Apple devices, the second allows you to connect supported Samsung smartphones to it, which will turn the system into a kind of “mini-PC” with a desktop-like shell. The connection turns out to be elementary: just activate DeX in the quick settings of your smartphone and select this monitor as the screen; a wired connection, as can be seen from the name of the technology, is not required.

In addition, Microsoft Office 365 users can work in it on the Samsung Smart Monitor M7 without connecting an additional device at all: the monitor comes with a pre-installed office suite, so you just need to connect a keyboard and mouse to it, and you can start working with documents in the “cloud” (For this you will, of course, need an active account in Office 365).

And the last option is to connect to a PC remotely. Samsung Smart Monitor M7 can connect, for example, to your work computer in the office via the Internet, after which you can work on it remotely from home.

Image quality

The Samsung Smart Monitor M7 (S32AM700UI) uses an 8-bit VA panel of its own production with a diagonal of 31.5 inches and a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. The pixel density is ~140 PPI, the dot size is 0.1816 mm - the image looks solid, not “falling apart” into individual pixels, and they can only be seen on the screen at close range. The refresh rate is standard, 60 Hz. This model uses PWM to adjust brightness, so at the lowest brightness level, users with sensitive eyes may notice very little backlight flickering.

The monitor uses a semi-matte screen coating, which almost completely eliminates stray glare and reflections, while the crystalline effect is weak (barely noticeable grain in plain areas of the image).

Black uniformity is quite good for such a screen area, body thickness and edge lighting: on a uniform black fill at maximum brightness in a dark room, you can see slightly lighter areas on the right side of the screen and a smaller area in the lower left corner. In normal use this does not appear in any way.

Thanks to the use of a VA panel, the glow effect in the Samsung Smart Monitor M7 is practically absent: when viewed from above from various angles, the glow on a black background is minimal and does not catch the eye at all.

In terms of viewing angles, this monitor shows results that are quite typical for this screen technology: with a strong deviation to the side, the brightness and color saturation noticeably decrease, and deep shadows are somewhat brightened; There are no noticeable color distortions observed.

There are five video modes available in the monitor settings: “Dynamic”, “Standard”, “Normal”, “Cinema” and Filmmaker. The first produces a bright and rich picture, while “Standard” offers the most balanced and “universal” settings, so it can be used as the main mode for most tasks. The color gamut in this case is 98% sRGB (76% Adobe RGB, 77% DCI-P3), when the gamma is set to BT.1886, its actual value corresponds almost perfectly to the standard 2.2 (if you select gamma 2 in the monitor settings ,2, the real value will be at the level of 2.0). The minimum brightness is very low, only 12 cd/m², so you can work comfortably with this monitor even in complete darkness. The maximum brightness is slightly higher than stated - about 270 cd/m², the maximum static contrast in the “Standard” mode with default settings is at 1700:1.

There are 4 preset options available to adjust the color temperature: in “cool” it almost reaches 12,000K, while the image looks downright cold. For everyday work, you should choose between the “standard” and “warm 1” options - their values (7300K and 6100K) are quite close to the standard temperature of 6500K. Let us immediately note that changing the brightness does not affect the color temperature in any way; it remains at the same level throughout the entire brightness range. Another advantage of the Samsung Smart Monitor M7 is its high temperature uniformity over the entire screen area; the maximum difference turns out to be about 4%, which is frankly small for a monitor with such a diagonal. The uniformity of backlight brightness is also very good: the decrease in brightness in the corners of the screen compared to the central area is within 7-13%.

Filmmaker mode, developed by major electronics manufacturers in conjunction with the UHD Alliance, is designed to recreate the greatest possible “cinematic” effect and delivers images as the filmmakers intended. In the “Cinema” mode, the maximum brightness is reduced to 190 cd/m², the color gamut remains the same, but the color accuracy is noticeably better than in the “Standard” mode: the average deltaE value is about 2.5, which is a good result for an uncalibrated monitor, not oriented towards professional work with color.

4.5

ITC.UA rating

Pros: Large screen; good image quality; a lot of connection options; TV SMART shell

Cons: No DisplayPort; minimum screen position adjustments

Conclusion: Samsung Smart Monitor M7 is a kind of universal multimedia “combine” that offers the widest possible capabilities for connecting a wide variety of devices, both wired and wireless, and even remote access functions.
Plus, there is a high-quality 32-inch VA panel with 4K resolution, a built-in “smart” Tizen shell and a Magic Remote, which turns it into a kind of “desktop TV”.
