Reprogramming the remote control from an old TV or DVD player.

To set up your old remote to work as an Apple TV remote, you'll need a working remote to begin the installation procedure.
I recommend using the Remote app for setup. Grab your old remote and on your Apple TV, use the Remote app to go to Settings > General > Remotes > Learn Remote.
