What you need for digital television at home
Of course, to watch programs in digital format, it is best to buy a new TV with a built-in tuner that supports DVB-T2. This will eliminate the need to connect additional devices and will allow you to use one remote control to search and switch channels.
Please note that outdated models of digital TVs with units operating in the DVB-T format will not be able to provide reception. Be sure to check this parameter when purchasing.
Considering the price of new TVs, it is understandable to want to save money on purchasing equipment for receiving digital television. And such a possibility exists. Let's consider the minimum configuration of devices that will ensure reliable signal reception not only in a city apartment, but also, for example, in a country house. The list of equipment is extremely simple:
- As with any television receivers, regardless of the year of manufacture or the format of the received channel, an antenna operating in the VHF/UHF range is required. In regions with poor reception, use antenna equipment with signal amplifiers to connect, the model of which is selected taking into account the terrain and the distance to the repeater.
- For an old TV, you will additionally need a set-top box capable of converting the received digital signal of the DVB-T2 format into a regular analog signal, with which the TV receiver can work. The cost of such a tuner is 10-20 times less than the price of the most inexpensive digital TV.

Polar
The story began in October 1992, when several like-minded students from the Moscow Aviation Institute decided to open their own television production. Imported equipment was not imported into the country at that time, and domestically produced television equipment was of low quality.
It was decided to launch the production of high-quality and inexpensive domestic televisions for the Russian consumer. The design engineers were faced with the task of creating a TV that meets international standards, is as functional as possible, and has a modern design. But most importantly, it had to work reliably in difficult Russian operating conditions: with power surges in the network, distance from the television center, and non-standard cable network signal.
The first to appear were 4th generation TVs with remote control.
In 2000, the company was the first among Russian manufacturers to begin producing televisions using digital technologies. Subsequently, the company's own development - the new generation technology Digitotal Technology - was patented. If until this time televisions of this level could only be found among expensive “foreigners,” now high-quality digital television equipment is becoming available to a wide range of Russians.

What set-top box is needed for digital television?
The main condition for choosing a set-top box for digital TV is the ability to receive a DVB-T2 signal and provide compression in the MPEG4 format. Devices that work in any other formats will be useless. So be sure to pay attention to these tuner specifications.
In addition, you should check the package contents of the device to make sure it can be connected to your TV. In most cases, the kit includes by default:
- RCA-to-RCA connecting cable, also called "tulips". Most models, including outdated ones, are equipped with such connectors. But, in some cases, the TV may only be equipped with a SCART connector, then you will need to purchase a special adapter that allows you to make connections.
- Remote control. Note that in most tuner models, channel tuning is only possible from the remote control; the buttons located on the control panel of the set-top box are not enough.
- Power unit. Despite the fact that some models can operate from antenna amplifier power supplies built into the TV, the best results are still obtained with a separate power supply.
Additionally, the tuner can be equipped with USB connectors for connecting flash drives that record TV programs, and inputs for connecting to the Internet, including wireless networks. But these options are not mandatory and can slightly increase the cost of the set-top box. As of February 2021, standard tuners cost no more than 1000–1500 rubles. And even the most affordable model will allow you to watch TV programs in HD quality.
What kind of antenna is needed to receive digital signals?
Today, manufacturers specially label antennas capable of operating with the terrestrial TV frequency range: the model specifications indicate DVB T2 . This is an indicator of the ability to obtain good quality digital television reception. This is what users who do not have the appropriate knowledge about the correct frequency ranges and other antenna parameters need to focus on.
There are three basic classes of receiving devices. Each of them is designed to operate in an area located at a certain distance from the base station, the signal transmitter. The fact is that the larger it is, the worse the digital television reception. To compensate for attenuation, the antenna must have a certain gain.
- Indoor antennas are useful for people located at a distance of up to 10 km from the base station. But there are exceptions to the rules. Active indoor antennas from individual manufacturers can be installed on a windowsill and provide high-quality station reception at a distance of up to 35 km.
- Outdoor omnidirectional antennas perform well in conditions of direct visibility of the transmitter at a distance of up to 20 km. This is the most reliable solution that does not require configuration.
- Directional antennas can provide reliable signal reception at a distance of 20 km and above. Today you can buy a model with a range of 100 km or more.
Important! Antennas can be passive or active, that is, equipped with amplifiers. In a simple case, models of the latter type are preferable. They generate a powerful signal and provide high quality digital television reception.
However, you should not cross the boundaries of reason. A powerful active antenna installed at a distance of 10 km from the station will create such an intense signal that the tuner or TV will simply refuse to work with it. Therefore, users who do not have sufficient knowledge in selecting and installing a receiving device are recommended to seek help from specialists.
Experienced subscribers may prefer a hybrid scheme. This means that a passive antenna and a separate amplifier are installed in front of the tuner. This circuit is protected from interference, more reliable, and makes it easy to change its individual components and make settings. However, to build such a system, the user will need special knowledge.
How does a digital TV set-top box work?
Please note the following feature of the equipment - in order to watch digital television on several receivers with the ability to independently select channels, you will have to purchase a separate set-top box for each of them. The principle of connecting, setting and operating the tuner is quite simple:
- Connect the antenna to the appropriate connector.
- Connect the audio and video output of the set-top box to the corresponding inputs of the TV with the special cord included in the kit.
- Connect the tuner to the network.
- After tuning the channels, which is carried out in accordance with the operating instructions for the equipment, the tuner will automatically reformat the on-air digital signal into analogue, which will be reproduced by the TV receiver.
The standard tuner provides reception of more than 20 free channels, including the most famous federal and commercial ones. To watch the usual information and entertainment resources, you do not need to pay for any additional subscriptions. At the same time, certain modifications of set-top boxes that support Internet connection will allow you to get a device from an old analog TV receiver that is not in many ways inferior in capabilities to modern Smart-TVs.
Even inexpensive modifications are capable of playing audio and video files from storage devices, recording programs on external media, and allowing access not only to TV channels, but also to radio stations.
Tuners for connecting analog TVs to digital terrestrial television are quite simple to set up and manage. Therefore, even a child will not have any difficulties connecting. And the main advantage of such a device is the ability to watch TV programs in HD quality, even in those regions where there have traditionally been problems with signal stability.
Analogue terrestrial television
The transmission of image and sound in this case is carried out via an analog electrical signal. Broadcasting of terrestrial analog television is carried out in two wave bands - meter and decimeter. This type of over-the-air television uses NTSC, PAL and SECAM television broadcast standards.
Today, analogue television is losing its popularity, giving way to digital broadcasting, since analogue TV cannot fully exploit the potential of modern televisions and provide users with a high-quality television picture. In addition, high-quality reception of an analog signal significantly depends on the geographical location of the reception site and its distance from the repeater.
