DVB-T2 receiver: description, characteristics, instructions, models and reviews

Digital television is not so long ago, but has already firmly entered our lives. However, not all of us have managed to acquire televisions with built-in digital receivers. There are two ways to solve this problem - buy a new and modern TV or install a small DVB-T2 receiver in your home.

The second option is the most profitable and acceptable, because receivers cost an order of magnitude less than a new “TV box”. However, some difficulties may arise here if you don’t know what to look for when purchasing.

DVB-T2 receivers

Today, TV towers broadcast both analog and digital signals in the same range. Therefore, to receive high-definition video channels, there is no need to install a new antenna - ordinary decimeter “horns”, which each of us probably has, will do.

It is also important to remember that not all TVs are capable of “reproducing” a digital signal. Of course, by connecting a DVB-T2 receiver to an old TV box, you will be able to watch your favorite channels, but you will not notice any differences in image quality.

Modern digital receivers are small devices that look very similar to DVD players. Most models have a simple liquid crystal display on the front panel and control buttons.

On the back wall of such a device there are connectors for connecting to an antenna and to a TV, additional slots for flash cards, adapters and other devices, as well as a power switch. When choosing a DVB-T2 receiver, you need to focus on the rear panel.

The new MSA7T00 processor was previously described, and in this review - about its older brother MSA7T10 .

Let me make a reservation right away that I do not have this set-top box, however, thanks to the user who provided detailed photos and the latest firmware version from the Chinese seller, this review will be useful to many.

In general, “ Vmade ” is a trademark of an OEM manufacturer widely known since 2003 -. They started selling under their own brand relatively recently, because... domain v-made.com was registered on May 19, 2016.

And I’ll also immediately note that on the website there are as many as 7 variants 8943 models on different processors with the same front panel:

In this case, it is considered on an
MSA7T10 with regular AV outputs, an Ethernet , dual power and a Dolby Digital :

Moreover, on AliExpress the absolute majority are equipped with an Availink AVL1509M (H.265) processor with the corresponding standard Sunplus-Availink with a small font:

with a regular medium- control , HDMI cable in a green box:

Sometimes it is also equipped with a WiFi plug adapter (after all, there is no Ethernet) and a simple UHF antenna:

but it’s better not to overpay for such an adapter and antenna. Yes, and for an HDMI cable - if necessary, you can always order it there on AliExpress.

And our user ordered and received -: from a specific seller, directly when ordering, you need to choose from 2 options - 8943 (Availink) with SCART or K6 (MStar) with AV, so be careful before putting it in the cart and mark in comments to the seller that you choose K6 .

Moreover, some sellers have the choice “ Shipping from: Russian Federation ”, for example, it arrived in the Moscow region in 4 days. This means that somewhere in Moscow or the region there is a warehouse.

Addition : K6 SCART output - when ordering:

However, there is no choice of SCART mode in the menu and, apparently, RGB is also initially absent on the board.

K6 comes in a blue box:

In the lower right corner it should be written - K6 :

As usual, remove the transport film from the case before use:

Included is a full-size learning remote control:

The blue TV is for turning on/off your TV, and the red TV Box is for the set-top box itself:

And on the reverse side are the training instructions:

And from some sellers on AliExpress:

Translation into Russian

By learning 4 buttons from your TV remote control, you won’t have to worry about using 2 remote controls:

and use
only the set-top box remote control : turn on/off the TV, select a video input, change the TV volume or any other function of your TV remote control, because
These 4 buttons can be trained to any TV button you need. Learning remotes help older people more easily cope with modern technology by controlling only 1 remote control. And the batteries only need to be changed in one remote control.

Let me remind you that the code for the remote control of the set-top box itself is very old and widespread, so in case of breakdown or loss, any Huayu DVB-T2 universal remote control .

But you don’t have to rush to look for a new remote control instead of the lost one - after all, the set-top box has all 7 control buttons , which will always help out if you live somewhere in the country or in a distant village:

Dual power supply is useful in case of failure of the internal power supply - just buy any external one for the specified voltage +5V and current 1.5A, for example, in for or p.

This is especially true in dachas and villages, because... the voltage there is not always stable.

Let me remind you that, unlike its older brother - the corporation, on the website of its younger brother - the company - there is no information even about the names of even old processors, there are only the most general words and directions of business development.

However, it can definitely be said that the new MSA7T10 has a hardware H.265/HEVC , while the processor platform itself is common.

For example, the standard name of the USB firmware file for both processors is:

upgrade_app_with_mboot_CL_BD_ MST297B _D01A_DEMOD_MSINTERN_DVBT2_TUNER_R836.bin

It is interesting to note that this file for the low-end processor - MSA7T 0 0 has a message inside:

Stream is HEVC TYPE BUT NOT SUPPORT

and the older MSA7T has 1 0 - there is no such phrase, but instead simply:

========>HEVC

And the final confirmation of their relationship is that the owner of the K6 initially had firmware from MSA7T00 (with Megogo, but AC-3 did not work).

I, in turn, also managed to flash the previously reviewed Divisat Hobbit Mini+ (MSA7T 0 0) with the latest firmware for K6 dated March 1, 2021 without any problems:

The lines are mixed up, but it is clear for which hardware - MSA 7T10 , tuner R 836 , LED driver FD 650 .

By the way, for Italy it makes no sense to take this prefix, because... The Italian government has abandoned plans to switch to DVB-T 2 (and even more so HEVC ), and will limit itself to only replacing the video codec: from the current old MPEG- 2 to regular MPEG- 4 - from January 1, 2021.

Vmade logo appears with their motto “ we made, well made ”:

I note that on the new MS A 7Txx processors, loading is faster: cold start - 11 s , and from standby mode even faster - 6 s .

This was very noticeable when saving a flash memory dump of set-top boxes on MStar - 40 s for the MSD7T01 and 10 s for the new MS A 7Txx, i.e. new processors work much faster with flash memory.

Let me remind you: the clock frequency of the MSD7T01 is 576 MHz, and the MSA7Txx is 750 MHz.

Although perhaps such speed is associated not only with the speed of the processor, but also with the use of Quad SPI mode.

When turned on, the digital indicator, as usual, first has dashes ––––, then boot and Channel number.

In standby mode - shows a ticking clock . And from the duty room they immediately change to the channel.

Previously, consoles were left on duty via boot .

The menu can be seen from the previous review 89 39 , with the exception of the crooked translation of the Time Setting item - “TimeShift”:

despite the fact that even in the English menu it is called Time Offset .

By the way, immediately change Auto to Manual , because... For some reason, in some firmware of various Auto , the default is with a shift of 30 minutes.

Like the previous 8939 (MSA7T00) - Multiple PLP is supported, Sorting by LCN is not and “??????” — in the Reminders List:

Teletext
also works CC button , including page 888 - subtitling:

Differences from 8939 - there is no Megogo here, but for the first time the Internet presence :

And if there is no connection, it becomes gray and crossed out:

Because firmware “ ITALY ”, then every time you go to YouTube , it offers the most popular Italian , and by changing the Region to RU , it will show Russian . But if you exit and enter, the Area IT :

In any case, you can use
Search , but despite the presence of the Russian < > English , the on-screen keyboard remains English , so we just type in transliteration:

Everything will be fine and will show:

And if the Internet suddenly falls off, it will come back:

And as soon as the Internet connection is restored (the icon turns blue), you can launch it again.

Because My Divisat Hobbit Mini+ has an MSA7T 0 0 processor and only the firmware from MSA7T 1 0, so it was not possible to test H.265/HEVC streams IPTV (and they are extremely difficult to find):

and the usual ones work fine:

Moreover, one of the Russian users noted that UDP multicast from his Internet provider works through the LAN and you can watch his IPTV by simply downloading the provider’s playlist.

After all, with conventional WiFi-only set-top boxes, in such cases you have to use UDP Proxy (available in ZyXEL, ASUS routers, the latest versions of D-Link and alternative OpenWrt/DD-WRT firmware) with a pre-converted playlist.

And with K6 , there is no need for UDP Proxy : we simply connect a cable to any router and download the IPTV playlist of your provider.

And, by the way, in set-top boxes with an Ethernet port, you do not need to immediately buy the appropriate WiFi adapter somewhere - we connect the cable from the router - and the set-top box is already on the Internet.

In Reviews, Czechs, Germans and Dutch complained that when receiving DVB-T2/HEVC over-the-air there was an inscription - No Service :

but it was the last one - the Italian firmware that fixed it, and they started showing it.

Since March 2021, the Czech Republic, in parallel with the old DVB-T MPEG-2, has been testing DVB-T2 HEVC channels with unusual quality SD 540p - 960x540. And, as seen above, HD versions have also been tested recently.

Germany must also complete the transition by 2021. But HEVC does not automatically mean the transition to 4K channels. It's just that SD and HD are starting to transmit using HEVC. And, for example, neighboring Austria, switching to DVB-T2, simply replaces the old MPEG- 2 with MPEG- 4 . Because H.265/HEVC, in addition to the difficulty of broadcasters having to replace it with new equipment, also requires paying for its license.

In Europe, the transition to DVB-T2 is planned for 2021, simultaneously with the release of frequencies above channel 48 (694 MHz) for LTE-700.

Those. they will only have 21-48 channels (470-694 MHz) for terrestrial television.

Well, Switzerland has completely refused to switch to -T2, and from June 3 it is stopping its digital broadcasting, offering as one of the options - encrypted satellite for 60 francs every year + a mandatory annual TV and radio fee of 365 francs for everyone (the largest in Europe, for comparison: in Germany - 210 euros, and in Austria - 298.56 euros each year).

At the same time, I note that this firmware certainly did not help our user when trying to view the monotonous Ultra HD /HEVC test multiplex broadcast on channel 58 (770 MHz) from the Ostankino tower (transmitter power 300 W, antenna located at an altitude of 415 m, signal available within a radius of up to 30 km). Its internal technical parameters:

Because This is not a 4K set-top box 3840 x 2160, but a regular Full HD 1920 x 1080 simply with the HEVC codec. In the Czech Republic, Germany, and Holland there are also no over-the-air 4K channels, but regular HD and Full HD with the HEVC codec.

Addition - May 18, 2020 : Test 1 multiplex with the HEVC/H.265 codec was launched from Ostankino.

The receiver successfully receives and displays this test stream.

And finally, let's take a look inside:

As you can see, the board occupies only half of the case.

Technological inscription T003 20181116V1.0

Tuner block (general quartz is here):

The front panel board is a universal DZ8943 and judging by the date 20161007V1.1 :

Suitable for all set-top boxes in this case, released over the past 2 years.

By the way, the designation DZ is not accidental; many have probably come across these letters to designate various chassis. As noted at the beginning, Shenzhen D ong z houjun Technology Co., Ltd. a well-known OEM manufacturer, and these letters are taken from its name - Dong z houjun.

Technical details : UHF input on BFP196 (RIs), Rafael Micro R836 tuner, MStar MSA7T10EZ 750 MHz processor, Zbit 25VQ32BSEG flash memory (4 MB), 24 MHz quartz, DC-DC S12 converters at 0.8A (U2 for +3.3V and U4 +1.1V cores), linear stabilizer AMS1117 1.8, Ethernet matching transformer Glory HB1601SNL, LED driver CSC725 (analogous to FD650), PWM Chipown PN8570H in the power supply.

The measured technical characteristics, including temperature, can be estimated from the previous review. Let me remind you that metal cases, if necessary, provide the possibility of a simple solution for cooling: any metal gasket - between the bottom of the board (where the processor is) and the metal bottom (visually shown at the end of this review).

Dual power supply goes like this: from the internal power supply directly, and from the external power supply through D4 (Schottky diode SS14).

As has been noted more than once, the presence of a UHF input tuner in the unit:

indicates the presence of various 4G-LTE/Wi-Fi/FM filters to compensate for signal attenuation after them.

UART pins (73 - RX, 74 - TX) are located on the reverse side:

and for GND you can use the pin on the left.

Log during cold startup, shutdown and startup from standby mode.

Now it’s clear why it takes 11 seconds to boot from a cold start, and only 6 seconds from standby.

From the duty officer - there are about 200 lines of initial initialization, but it begins immediately with the phrase:

===== MIPS power up =====

Moreover, there is no such phrase during a cold start.

Those. The new processors have implemented a sleep mode , so loading from standby is now much faster.

As I noted at the very beginning: this is the firmware log for the 7T 1 0 on the 7T 0 0 processor, so there may not be any details related to H.265/HEVC.

Output of the printenv command.

In the previous review, the Vmade 89 39 (MSA7T00) had the showversion showing the firmware identifier, but here it has already been removed:

k5ap# showversion Unknown command 'showversion' — try 'help'

Well, let me remind you that on new processors the main command - help does not work:

k5ap# help Unknown command 'help' — try 'help' k5ap# ? Unknown command '?' — try 'help'

1 firmware, the program code began to take up a reasonable 8 MB instead of the gigantic 33 for the MSA7T 0 0 firmware. Perhaps it was some kind of poorly compressed “water”, and then they figured it out.

E pinout of the new processors (with the letter E ):

63 RD– — R49 — 64 RD+ — R50 — 65 TD– — R45 — 66 TD+ — R48 —

R12 - to the yellow ACTIVITY LED R13 - to the green LINK LED

Let me remind you that if you want to make your own Ethernet, the easiest way is to use a neatly cut piece of board, for example, from an old ADSL modem as described in the previous part, and connect it to the processor.

Like the Vmade 89 39 (MSA7T00) reviewed in the previous review, all Vmade 89 43 (including this K6 ) have USB connector contacts also located on the top:

What this can lead to when connecting WiFi adapters with antennas was shown there.

One option is to disassemble the console and the front panel:

and resolder the USB CON1 terminal block , turning them 180°.

But the situation is no better for set-top boxes with a vertical USB arrangement, for example, World Vision T62D (and clones):

the indicator is not visible, and the antenna is located horizontally, while for the WiFi router it is vertical. Different polarization.

And if you try to plug it in from behind, the situation is even worse - there are a bunch of protruding connectors and cables.

Therefore, when choosing WiFi adapters, you need to pay attention not only to the possibility of folding the antenna at an angle of 90° ⅃, but also to the possibility of rotating around its axis.

And then even from behind it will be normal and will not bother anyone:

In this case, an adapter with a real 5 dBi antenna and a blue activity indicator:

But, for example, a good adapter can only be folded:

but don't turn around.

Of course, this issue can be resolved by purchasing a USB extender, which in some situations is even better - to improve Wi-Fi reception and reduce interference from Wi-Fi - DVB-T2 reception.

And let me remind you once again that any DVB-T2 set-top boxes require WiFi adapters on the MediaTek MT7601 .

In conclusion, let's summarize:

Positive: New 750 MHz MStar MSA7T10 processor with fast channel switching, reduced power consumption and heat dissipation, fast boot up when turned on, H.265/HEVC codec, Ethernet port, UDP multicast pass-through from your IPTV provider (i.e. no need for UDP Proxy with playlist conversion), there is YouTube and IPTV, a Dolby Digital license, periodically updated firmware from Chinese sellers, a learning remote control, a digital indicator with a clock in standby mode, 7 buttons on the panel, the possibility of dual power supply, a spacious metal case with many slots.

Negative: the USB connector is upside down, Sorting “by LCN” does not work (and there is no option “by Name”), YouTube Search currently only has an English layout.

In general, even if there is never a need for H.265/HEVC, this set-top box is a worthwhile thing, and the price starts from 1600 rubles. I think it is completely justified, especially since there will be no such models on the markets of the countries of the former USSR, because The competition is fierce, so none of the Customers will supply such sophisticated models, it’s simply not profitable from a business point of view.

Of course, those who only need Ethernet can order (MSA7T00) - for 250 rubles. cheaper (from 1350 rubles), but it does not have a Dolby Digital license and a learning remote control (and, of course, HEVC).

For comparison: for example, Lumax set-top boxes start at least from 1450 rubles. — (MSD7T01) — a small plastic case without a digital indicator and any buttons, a small remote control, and of course no Internet functions. Lumax's only plus is its 2-year warranty.

Thus, the line of new MStar processors presumably looks like this:

  • MSA7T00Z
  • MSA7T00 E Z - Ethernet
  • MSA7T 1 0 E Z - H.265/HEVC, Ethernet

MSA7T 1 0 without the letter E is not found.

As shown above, processor firmware is interchangeable, but of course the 7T00 will not have the ability to decode H.265/HEVC with the firmware from the 7T10.

And also, as usual, you cannot add a Dolby Digital (AC-3) license to the processor using someone else’s firmware; by the way, the opposite situation is true: a processor with a license may not have Dolby Digital sound if it was flashed with someone else’s firmware without such support.

And, specifically, downloads for .

To download the firmware, you do not need to register. Direct link to the latest one from:

After updating consoles on MStar, be sure to reset them to factory settings.

No changes were noticed in the new firmware, although the note states:

The new version of the firmware fixes the bug that the channel plays no picture and no sound And YOUTUBE cannot play normally.

Naturally, the test 4K multiplex from the Ostankino tower on this Full HD set-top box is still black.

Let me remind you once again: if you have a set-top box on any MStar processors, you can, without opening the case , save a backup copy of it for later restoration if such a need suddenly arises in the future:

Saving a flash memory dump of set-top boxes on MStar

Addition about the Vmade 8943 on the Sunplus Availink AVL1509M with SCART :

I chose this set-top box because of the presence of a scart; I hoped that there would be the RGB and control voltage inherent in a full scart to switch the TV to the appropriate input, in order to get rid of additional manipulations with the TV remote control.

However, a preliminary check showed that the set-top box only outputs cvbs, i.e. composite signal. Switching in the menu does not affect anything, cvbs runs constantly.

Conclusion - if Scart does not work fully, there is no point in buying it.

There is no voltage on pin 8.

How to fix: Enabling RGB mode in set-top boxes with SCART using the Vmade 8943 as an example.

Receiver characteristics

The first important characteristic of a digital receiver is the supported video resolution. This setting must match the resolution of your TV. So, if the screen only supports SDTV, then there is simply no need to buy a set-top box that supports high-definition HD video - the TV will still broadcast as before. The same applies to the built-in 3D function.

The presence of the necessary connectors to connect the set-top box to the TV is the second most important parameter. The vast majority of equipment uses an RCA cable, or “tulips,” for connection. Some DVB-T2 over-the-air receivers use SCART cables along with RCA ports.

In addition, you can use one of the built-in interfaces to connect to your TV. As a rule, this very often serves as an HDMI port. The presence of all the listed connectors will allow you to connect two TVs to one receiver at the same time.

Checking the signal level and calibrating it

If you need to check the signal quality, follow these steps:

  1. Press the " Options "
    on your remote.
  2. Then click on " System Information
    ".
  3. An information screen will appear showing the signal strength. The red bar means a weak signal level, the yellow bar means medium. A green bar indicates good digital signal quality.

If the signal quality is unsatisfactory, the following tips may help:

  • If you have an outdoor antenna, mount it as high as possible. It is best to install it on the roof of your house;
  • Check the antenna connections for rust;
  • Connect the antenna cable tightly to the TV;
  • Reinstall the antenna until the signal quality improves.

Built-in Interfaces

You can often find equipment on the market with a built-in USB interface, thanks to which you can connect a flash drive, phone, and in some cases even a laptop to the receiver. However, such a DVB-T2 receiver is slightly more expensive than a conventional installation. Most often, the described capabilities are used to record a TV show on a flash card or to play audio and video files stored on a flash drive.

The built-in CI slot for connecting a conditional access card, which allows you to view paid channels, has a significant impact on the price. Today, almost all channels broadcast in Russia are free, but in the future such an opportunity may turn out to be very useful.

Additional functions

The receiver may have a large number of built-in functions that the owners are not even aware of. The most popular is the ability to “stop time” - TimeShift. But this feature is just a trick that makes the DVB-T2 digital TV receiver more expensive.

The fact is that this function is only available for satellite receivers. In “antenna” devices, when “time is stopped,” a screenshot is taken and the sound is turned off, but the transmission itself continues to go on.

Another popular feature, the TV guide, which allows you to view the program schedule, works slightly better. Its functionality depends on the specific channel. Setting a timer to automatically turn the channel on or off are the only additional functions that work flawlessly.

Connecting the set-top box to the TV

There are two ways to connect a digital set-top box. If your antenna has a ready-made coaxial cable, then you just need to insert it into the DVB-T2 digital TV receiver, and then start setting up channels. In some cases, you have to buy the coaxial cable yourself, especially if your antenna has a built-in amplifier.

In this case, you will also need a screw-on f-type connector. To install it on the cable, you need to cut off the insulation layer, distribute metal foil and mesh along the contour and get to the copper core. Then you can screw the connector into the receiver.

There are many more ways to connect a TV to a set-top box. You can use tulip, RCA, SCART or HDMI cables. There will be no difficulties here. After combining the devices, all that remains is to configure the DVB-T2 digital receiver in the same way as setting up a channel search on a TV.

Budget models

The cost of budget models is in the range of 1-2 thousand rubles. Their functionality is sufficient for comfortable viewing of TV shows.

Our list opens with the VVK SMP240HDT2 receiver costing up to 1.5 thousand rubles. There is a built-in USB interface, which makes it possible to record TV programs and view media files. The HDMI connector can be used to connect an HD TV. Among the disadvantages, it should be noted the poor response to the remote control and the coincidence of commands with the signals from the TV remote control.

The D-COLOR DC1302 set-top box has all the same built-in functions as the previous representative. But this digital DVB-T2 receiver is more user-friendly - it responds better to remote control commands. Buyers also noted the stylish metal case with plastic inserts. Among the disadvantages is the delayed channel switching.

The Oriel 963 receiver is less functional than previous representatives - there is no HDMI. Users especially liked the simple channel setup, which can be done in just a couple of clicks. But the menu is not very convenient and understandable - you will have to figure it out.

Special Representatives

These consoles presented below can be called special for some additional features that are not available in the models already described. In addition, the cost of these devices also does not exceed 2 thousand rubles.

SUPRA SDT-94 is a digital DVB-T2 receiver with support for HD resolution and a USB interface for viewing data from flash cards. Separately, users noted good signal reception, regardless of the type of antenna connected, as well as simple channel search. A special feature is the parental control function, which blocks certain channels until a password is entered. The main disadvantage is the reduction in image quality when connected via a composite output.

A more original model is the Rolsen RDB-532. The receiver is compact in size and has low power consumption, which allows it to be used as a portable or car receiver. To do this, you just need to buy a power cord. It lacks an HDMI connector, but the ability to view multimedia remains. This DVB-T2 television receiver has no complaints from users. Its functionality fully corresponds to the price.

SMART receivers

This group of devices is the most expensive. However, they are more functional and are able to access the Internet, and also have a number of other features.

The Dune HD Solo 4K receiver, in addition to watching TV channels directly from the Internet in 4K format, playing multimedia, recording video, accessing the global network, a convenient menu and functions already described for other models, can be used as a wireless access point to a Wi-Fi network. Fi. At the same time, providing high speed to several users simultaneously. Among the disadvantages, the high price should be noted - about 24 thousand rubles.

IconBIT XDS94K is a much less functional DVB-T2 digital terrestrial receiver. But it also costs 4 times less than the previous representative. In addition to browsing Internet resources and playing multimedia, the device can be used to make video calls; you just need to buy a webcam. Additionally, you can connect a mouse and keyboard to the receiver. Among the disadvantages is the rather long loading time of channels.
