Satellite TV subscribers: will Tricolor be shown when switching to digital television?

The question of whether satellite television can be considered digital should not bother ordinary TV viewers. For them, the quality of broadcast, availability of connection and prices for TV channel packages are important. And the rest should be taken care of by providers, including the type of broadcasting and providing clients with a high-quality signal. At the same time, those who want to switch to Tricolor TV digital television should not think about how to do this. The decision of Russian legislators to abandon analogue broadcasting is mandatory for all operators. The only thing subscribers will have to worry about is purchasing a TV capable of processing a high-quality signal. But this will not cause huge difficulties, since almost all models available on the market in 2021 cope with this task perfectly.

Who will be affected by the shutdown of analogue television?

The government plans to completely stop subsidizing analog television in Russia in 2021, and as a result, channels will stop working. Let's figure out who will be affected by the shutdown?

First of all, the transition to digital will affect owners of old TVs connected directly to the antenna. They receive a signal in the meter range, and to receive digital television you need a decimeter signal for the European DVB-T2 standard. This standard allows you to get a clearer picture, stable image and good sound. Owners of cable and satellite television do not have to worry, they already receive a signal in digital format, and turning off analogue will not affect them.

Differences between digital TV and analogue

I won’t spoil things here about digital and analog signals, who cares? No one. Let's take a closer look at the practical difference in use.

Equipment

So, to watch analog television you need a regular terrestrial antenna (in an apartment, on the roof) or a cable television connected to some company. Due to the specifics of how an analog signal works (after all, I had to write about signals), the image can be distorted in every possible way under the influence of external sources of interference.

In turn, to watch digital television, a regular antenna is not enough. You will have to install a receiver (encrypted digital signal decoder) near the TV, which will convert the received data into an image and display the picture on the TV screen.

A good example is Interactive TV from Rostelecom, which I wrote about in great detail in this article.

Digital satellite TV is a little different from the previous example. And if you want to watch satellite television, you will have to install a satellite dish (“dish”) on the wall of your private or apartment building. This time, we can use as an example.

Naturally, the satellite TV provider will provide you with all the necessary equipment and install an antenna. But the number of channels will depend on the selected service package.

Image quality

Without a doubt, digital television is the leader in this regard in all respects. Here are some obvious advantages of digital:

  • Does not lose signal quality if transmitted over very long distances;
  • The image cannot contain glare, “snow”, picture distortion and other common defects when watching analog television;
  • Possibility of connecting channels in HD quality. One could safely put this item first on the list, since a high-definition image is the dream of any TV viewer who has a large diagonal TV screen.

Other options

Undoubtedly, in addition to image quality, IPTV has many other advantages:

  • A huge list of channels, divided into thematic groups. It is not difficult to guess that the number of channels depends on the purchased package of provider services;
  • TV program. The times when we watched a TV program printed in the newspaper are gradually becoming a thing of the past. Now you just need to press the remote control button to display the program announcement;
  • Interactive viewing - the ability to pause, record or rewind the program. Not all providers have it, but the function is very interesting;
  • Choice of subtitle and broadcast language, ability to change sound format (mono/stereo), various social components (access to Twitter, Facebook, and so on).

Somehow I’ve gotten really into trouble with my writing, it’s time to finish.

What is needed to switch from tricolor to digital television

If you have a tricolor antenna installed and you want to switch to digital television, there are two options for you.

The first is the simplest, determine how far the DVB-T2 transmitter is from you and, based on this, buy an antenna with the required gain, then install the antenna on the facade.

The second is more complicated, you can leave the satellite dish in place, but replace the converter with a 900 Mhz 75 ohm satellite feed, and you need to make sure that the digital television transmitter is located on the same side where the satellite dish is installed. It is worth paying attention that it is necessary to choose an irradiator operating at frequencies of 900 Mhz, and must be matched to 75 Ohms.

What is the advantage of this method? You do not need to remove the satellite dish and lay the cable from the antenna to the receiver. The amplification of the digital signal obtained thanks to the feed will be much greater than from a conventional antenna. But setting up the satellite dish itself will be much more difficult, since you need to know the exact location of the digital tower, and there should be no interference in the direction of the signal.

Tricolor satellite receiver

Old tricolor receivers are designed to receive a DVB-S/S2 satellite signal, but to receive digital television you need a DVB-T2 signal, so we won’t be able to watch channels using it. You will need to purchase a digital set-top box, or have a TV that supports this communication standard.

Watching channels using a smart set-top box

If you have a stable Internet connection, you can easily use the smart set-top box to watch more than 1,500 channels. The cost of viewing through a paid service is $1 per month.

This set-top box connects to the TV using HDMI or a standard tulip connection.

What is better to choose for connection?

The features of the operation of satellite and other types of digital television are discussed above, and a summary table with the advantages and disadvantages of each technology will help you understand which is better to choose.

TV typeAdvantagesFlawsConclusion
Via antennaDoes not require a subscription fee; to connect you will need an inexpensive DVB-T2 set-top box or the presence of a function on your TV. For reception, a regular home or indoor antenna is used without complex installation. It doesn’t catch everywhere; the further the user is from the tower, the less chance there is of catching the signal. The signal may be blocked by buildings. Often there is no such thing on the first floors, but for the residents of the upper floors everything is fine. As a rule, this type of hanging is not available to residents of villages, dachas and areas remote from cities. The signal drops when weather conditions worsen. Few channels. When connecting several TVs from one antenna, they will show the same channels. Suitable for city residents who rarely watch TV or who have enough of the main federal channels. The choice of older people who are unable to bear the additional costs of subscription fees.
CableA large number of channels, high signal quality, you can do without buying a receiver. There is an option to view different content on different devices. The signal does not depend on weather and other factors. It is necessary to extend the coaxial cable. There is a subscription fee. This type of broadcasting is available mainly to residents of apartment buildings. Suitable for those who spend a lot of time in front of the TV and live in an apartment building. Laying out a coaxial cable is sometimes easier than installing an antenna.
IPTVA large number of channels, high signal quality, no additional wiring required. You can watch different channels on different devices. There is a subscription fee. A receiver is required. Internet speed may drop. The signal is not available in case of a line failure. Access to broadcasting is not available everywhere, even if high-speed Internet is available. The choice of Internet users with a high-speed connection. Suitable if you don’t want to run extra wires into your apartment.
SatelliteA large number of channels, high signal quality, which does not depend on the connection location. You can activate the option to view content separately on different equipment from one satellite dish. High cost of equipment, presence of a subscription fee, rather complicated installation.To a greater extent, satellite TV is suitable for people who live in areas remote from large cities - villages, dachas, etc., where there is no stable digital television broadcast or the ability to connect cable or Internet television.

What to choose in the end depends solely on the needs and capabilities of the users. The quality of the content is the same for all types, but the ease of use and connection are different, and the number of channels will be different.

Changing provider to MTS

Relatively recently, the MTS company began broadcasting television channels from the ABS2 satellite, so there are no reliable reviews about the quality of the equipment and signal stability yet. But we can easily say that MTS has the most advantageous offer on the satellite systems market.

Provided that we already have tricolor TV, for the transition we will need an official MTS receiver and a linear converter. Since the satellites of both providers are different, we will need to re-align the satellite dish to the 75 degree satellite. You can read more about how to do this here.

Television equipment

Naturally, it will be impossible to catch TV channels without equipment, but companies offer different options, including price and quality. Perhaps the purchase of equipment is the most expensive part of the service. That is why quite often operators can offer to install not only new devices, but also those that have already been used. Is no exception.

  • You need to understand that by giving preference to a used receiver, the user finds himself without warranty service, and this entails various difficulties in repairing and updating the equipment. offers a new kit, or you can use equipment you already have that fits the parameters. In this case, warranty service will be provided;

  • Installation of the antenna and other devices included in the kit. Since it uses powerful equipment to broadcast its broadcast, there will be no difficulties in receiving a signal, even if the antenna is small in diameter (less than 60 cm). But Telekarta did not install its satellite so high, so the quality of signal reception in some areas leaves much to be desired. However, the channels show you will just have to install a large dish. In particular, for cities where the signal is relatively normal, equipment with a diameter of 60 cm or more is suitable, but if the signal is weak, then you need to buy a large dish with a diameter of at least 90 cm. So in this round, the victory goes unquestioningly to the kit from Tricolor TV ;
  • The price of equipment also plays a significant role. So, in this case, Telecard is definitely better, since the cost of equipment from this operator is much lower than from Tricolor. It is worth remembering that Tricolor equipment needs to be changed every two years, otherwise even paid channels will stop broadcasting. This is not a cheap pleasure. In addition, installing Tricolor also costs a pretty penny. The fact is that setting up a satellite is somewhat more complicated, so in this case the Telekarta operator deservedly wins.

Replacing Tricolor with NTV+

The simplest and most convenient way to replace the Tricolor TV provider is NTV+. Since they have the same satellite, you just need to buy a set-top box. Previously, there was an opinion that NTV+ services were very expensive, but at the moment they have changed their pricing policy. Prices for annual packages start from 750 rubles per year, with the ability to connect any packages separately.
