LG TV markings - features, explanation and examples

LG is a South Korean company that produces various household appliances. The brand's TVs are very popular. Many people, while in a store and looking at the price tags of devices, noticed that some letters and numbers were written on it. Not everyone knows their meaning, and this is the marking of LG TVs. By deciphering it, you can find out a lot of information about the technology: year of manufacture, screen manufacturing technology and its size, series, etc. There is no uniform labeling standard, so each brand has its own.

Choosing a TV from LG

OLED, LED or QLED displays?

OLED technology, based on the glow of tiny organic light-emitting diodes in each pixel of the matrix, has long been the prerogative of LG's best TVs. OLED displays differ from LED displays in significantly better contrast and color accuracy, but due to the technological complexity of manufacturing, OLED displays are more expensive.

QLED technology is now used by the main competitor of LG TVs – Samsung Electronics. Taking cues from LED displays, Samsung placed a metal nanofilter based on quantum dots between the LED backlight matrix and the LCD screen, which significantly helped improve contrast. However, this technology was only able to overtake OLED displays in terms of color volume. In terms of viewing angle, response time and other parameters, OLED displays are now leading.

Type of backlight and screen structure

Screen backlighting is used in LCD TVs. Most often it comes in three types: Edge LED, Direct LED or CCFL. The last type is the illumination of an LCD screen with lamps similar in structure to conventional fluorescent lamps, but significantly smaller in size. Now this technology is considered obsolete and is practically not used in LG TVs.

The best LCD TVs from LG use Edge LED or Direct LED backlights. In the first, the LEDs are located at the edges of the screen, which is why it is also called “side lighting”. Its main advantage is that the matrix and the TV itself will be extremely thin, but glare may appear at the edges of the screen.

In Direct LED technology, LEDs are evenly distributed over the entire area behind the matrix. These TVs have a fairly high contrast level, but they are more energy-consuming, thicker and more expensive than TVs with Edge LED.

Display diagonal and refresh rate

If the diagonal of the display determines only the size of the TV, then the quality of the picture depends on the refresh rate. On large diagonal TVs - 65 inches and above - with a refresh rate of 50 Hz, the picture in complex and fast scenes will look noticeably blurry. That's why the best LG TVs rarely drop the refresh rate below 100Hz.

At a refresh rate of 200 Hz, the image quality is certainly better, but not so much that it can be easily distinguished. 100 Hz is a fairly comfortable value, and it is not always necessary to overpay significant sums for screens with a higher scan rate.

Screen resolution

The number of pixels determines how clear the image will be. In inexpensive TVs you can still find a resolution of 1366x768 pixels, but the best LG models offer pictures in Full HD (1920x1080 pixels) or Ultra HD (4K with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels). LG Electronics was one of the first to use 4K technology in its TVs. Such TVs transmit images with excellent clarity, but the disadvantage of the technology is that only a few TV channels have switched to broadcasting images of this resolution, so there is little benefit from 4K yet.

To indicate the features of the screen, the letters “p” or “i” are often indicated after the numbers. In the first case, this means that even and odd lines are displayed simultaneously. The letter “i” denotes alternate output of these lines. Visually this is almost imperceptible, but in the first case the image quality will still be higher.

Power of installed speakers and their number

Of course, watching movies and shows with good sound is much more enjoyable. Most often, LG TVs are equipped with two speakers, but the best TV models are equipped with both four and six speakers.

For small rooms, 5W speakers are sufficient, but the best LG TVs most often have 10W speakers. However, sound quality depends not only on them. For greater comfort, it is advisable that the TV have Dolby Digital and DTS sound decoders. Well, in any case, you shouldn’t expect revelations in sound quality from a TV, even an expensive one - for this you need an external audio system.

Connectors on the back and side walls

The best LG TVs have always had a large number of interfaces. Even on budget models there are usually more than enough of them.

HDMI and USB connectors are required on models from this manufacturer, and they are often placed not only on the back wall of the TV, but also on the sides for convenient connection of game consoles or flash drives. In addition, there is almost always an RJ-45 Internet port, audio output, smart card slot and other interfaces.

Additional functionality

The best LG TVs have always had a lot of additional functionality. Only budget models can lose to competitors in this indicator. The top models of this manufacturer often have “picture in picture”, automatic contrast adjustment and noise reduction systems, support for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Smart TV.

Owner complaints about breakdowns

The most common malfunctions of LG TVs are power supply failures, tuner failures and display backlight failures. In the first case, this means that the TV does not turn on the first time. This malfunction can be eliminated by simply replacing the electrolytic capacitors. If the tuner breaks down, the channel settings are lost and there is no way to reconfigure them. In this case, most likely, the tuner will have to be replaced completely. Well, the display backlight most often breaks on LG TVs of the fifth series. Fixing this problem will require replacing the LEDs.

Product code

In addition to standard markings and designations, LG TVs also have a product code, which encrypts additional information. This code consists exclusively of letters. So, the first letter will indicate which part of the world the TV is intended for:

  • A – Australia;
  • N – USA and Canada;
  • S – countries of South America;
  • T – African countries and the East;
  • U – Asian countries;
  • Z – European countries.

The second letter relates to design, so it can be ignored. Next comes a letter indicating in which country the board installed in this TV was manufactured. There are three options in total:

  • B – Russia;
  • A – Korea;
  • C – Czech Republic.

The next two letters indicate which country it is intended for. So, if the TV was made for Russia, then you can read RU, for Ukraine - UA, Belarus - BY, Poland - PL, and so on.

After this comes a letter that corresponds to one or another matrix that was used. A total of 15 matrices can be used, and accordingly the range of letters will be the same.

Next will be the letter W or L, indicating the type of backlight, and at the end there will be two letters that also indicate the country, but this time the country of assembly. Since all LG TVs are assembled in only four countries, this could be:

  • LH – Korea;
  • JU – Russia;
  • JG – Poland;
  • LA – Czech Republic.

Top 10 LG TVs

Best Budget LG TV

LG 22TN610V-PZ

A compact and budget LG TV model that can easily find its place somewhere in the country, in the kitchen, or even on the desktop - as a computer monitor. With a diagonal of only 22 inches, the device has a good resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels, a brightness of 250 cd/m2, a contrast of 1000:1, wide viewing angles and good colors (this is the merit of not the newest, but high-quality IPS matrix).

Among the shortcomings, we can note that the factory calibration is not the most successful, and the speakers have a total power of only 10 watts. On the other hand, with a price tag of 12,000 rubles, you can easily turn a blind eye to this.

Price: RUB 11,299

Best LG 32-inch TV

LG 32LM6390

The design of modern electronics, including televisions, does not stand still, but it is still not so easy to find a device in an all-white case. So if you need a TV for a white interior in the kitchen, country house or small living room, then you should take a closer look at the LG 32LM6390. The device is distinguished by its compact dimensions (display diagonal is modest by today's standards of 32 inches), support for Full HD resolution (1920 by 1080 pixels) and HDR technology. Smart TV runs on the proprietary webOS operating system.

Not the newest model, which will not lose its attractiveness and relevance for a very long time, will cost you a little over 21,000 rubles.

Price: RUB 21,989

Best LG 43-inch TV

LG 43UK6200

Far from the newest, but still a stylish and relevant LG TV model. It looks very strict and even conservative thanks to the thin black body with narrow frames around the 43-inch display. The classic appearance, fortunately, did not affect the technical equipment of the device. In place there is support for 4K resolution (3840 by 2160 pixels), and HDR10, and wide viewing angles of the IPS matrix. The display's native refresh rate is 50 hertz, but software allows you to increase the index of dynamic scenes to a value of 1500 - that is, not a single frame of the fastest action will be washed out or lost.

The asking price is only 24,000 rubles, which the LG 43UK6200 covers in full.

Price: RUB 23,989

The best LG 55-inch TVs

LG 55UN80006

55-inch LG TV in dark titanium color. A bright display, clear picture, rich and natural colors, wide viewing angles - all these are the advantages of an excellent IPS matrix with a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels. In addition, among the advantages of this model, they most often note a convenient remote control, good built-in sound (responsible for a pair of 10-watt speakers) and a fast smart TV based on webOS.

Without a discount, the device costs about 53,000 rubles, and this is quite an adequate price for such a nice, productive and even fashionable device, the only drawback of which is the lack of a jack for wired headphones.

Price: RUB 52,989

LG 55UN73006LA

It seems that 4K Ultra HD resolution has finally ceased to be the prerogative of devices exclusively in the upper price segment. Today, UHD matrices can be found even in inexpensive TV models, which is confirmed by the very popular LG 55UN73006LA. In principle, the success of the device is quite simple to explain, because at a price of around 38,500 rubles, it boasts a 55-inch 4K screen with an IPS matrix and Direct LED backlight, support for HDR10 Pro, excellent sound from the built-in audio system and a fast Smart TV.

If you need an Ultra HD TV without junk functionality and at a reasonable price, then this model is just for you.

Price: RUB 37,989

Best LG 65-inch TV

LG 65UN73006

Another device from LG’s 2020 line of inexpensive 4K TVs. This time, however, it is more expensive: 65UN73006 is asking about 57,000 rubles. But the diagonal of the screen here is larger and is 65 inches - such a device will find a place even in a large living room, and in smaller rooms it will even be cramped.

Otherwise, most of the parameters here are the same as those of the 55UN73006LA: IPS matrix with a native refresh rate of 50 hertz, display resolution 3840×2160 pixels, support for HDR 10 Pro, uniform Direct LED backlighting, proprietary webOS operating system, good sound from a pair of ten-watt speakers . A simple, affordable, but very interesting model in its own way.

Price: RUB 52,989

Best LG TV with Full HD

LG 49LK6100

LG TV 2021, which differs from most competitors with a very exotic diagonal of 48.5 inches. For such a relatively modest size by today's standards, a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels is quite sufficient. This can probably be called the only drawback of this model, and even then it’s a stretch, because even a mountain eagle won’t notice the difference compared to 4K from a couple of meters away. Moreover, all other characteristics of the LG 49LK6100 are in perfect order: it has a nice bright matrix with wide viewing angles, Smart TV works quickly and without freezing thanks to the proprietary webOS shell, and the built-in speakers produce quite decent sound.

In short, this TV lives up to its price of 36,500 rubles.

Price: RUB 29,509

Best LG TV with 4K

LG 43UK6550

Despite the fact that the model name includes the index 43, the actual diagonal of this model is 42.5 inches. Not so much as of 2021, but this device will fit perfectly somewhere in the kitchen or just in a not too large room. Fortunately, you can watch it almost point-blank: for this we should thank the gorgeous IPS matrix with good viewing angles, uniform Direct LED backlighting and Ultra HD resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels.

The most important thing is that for 43UK6550 they ask for only a little more than 26,500 rubles.

Price: ₽ 26,500

Best LG OLED TV

OLED LG OLED65CXR

The matrix of this device is built on the basis of organic light-emitting diodes - proprietary LG technology, which differs from the more familiar LED not only in its solid price, but, first of all, in its extremely high contrast. “True black color”, which can never be obtained from any LED TV for devices with OLED, is a common thing, because here the pixels themselves glow (or don’t glow at all), which do not require a constantly working backlight.

Of course, this 65-inch big guy supports a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels, Dolby Vision and HDR 10 Pro, has its own refresh rate of 100 Hertz and four built-in speakers with a total power of 40 watts, which produce bright, rich and even surround sound.

A real home theater that fully justifies the rather hefty price of 210,000 rubles.

The best LG TV with Smart TV support

LG 43UK6750

The LG 43UK6750 TV is quite inexpensive for its diagonal (42.5 inches) (about 30,000 rubles), and it supports 4K UHD. This device comes with a Magic Remote, which is very convenient when controlling your TV. The TFT IPS matrix with Direct LED backlight produces a very high-quality picture. But it is precisely because of this backlight that the TV is thick, and it is not very convenient to hang it on the wall. Overall, the LG 43UK6750 TV is the best LG TV with Smart TV support.

Price: ₽ 30,900

Diagonal

At the very beginning of the marking there is an indication that this is a TV produced by LG. After this comes a two-digit number, which means the diagonal size of the screen, indicated in inches (1 inch - 2.54 centimeters).

The most popular models are 32, 40 and 50 inches. It all depends on where you will place the TV in the future and from what distance you are going to watch it. Also, keep in mind that the larger the screen size, the more you will have to pay.

Serial number

In addition to the markings and product code, LG TVs have a specific serial number, which also contains encrypted information. This number consists of letters and numbers and is deciphered as follows:

  1. The first digit indicates the year of manufacture. Accordingly, if the number starts with the number 4, it means the TV was manufactured in 2014;
  2. The next two-digit number is responsible for the month, that is, 02 is February;
  3. The letters indicated after the first three digits allow you to find out the country in which this TV was manufactured.

The country of origin may be indicated as follows:

  • AK – Kazakhstan;
  • L – Czech Republic;
  • MA or WR – Poland;
  • PT – Korea;
  • RA – Russia.

After the country is indicated, there are also letters and numbers, but you should not pay attention to them, since they will not carry any fundamentally important information for the user. They may only be of interest to specialists.

FAQ

Which TV is better, LG or Samsung? In terms of basic technical parameters, these manufacturers are almost the same. If you are buying budget options, Samsung is preferable as their TVs have a few more advanced features in this price range. But if you buy premium TVs, for example, OLED or 4K HDR, LG has an advantage.

Which LG TV should I get for PS4? To play on this console, you need a screen with a resolution of at least Full HD and viewing angles of 170°. Such models are available in all LG lines. Therefore, you can choose any one, depending on your financial capabilities. We recommend the LG 43UK6750 TV. It is ideal for both watching movies and playing games on PS4.

Which series of LG TVs is better? LG TVs have long been distinguished by their proven quality, and to say that any series of them is better or worse is not entirely true. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages, and you should choose based not on the series, but on the technical parameters. Unless it’s better not to buy experimental series, like the 2021 SM99 with 8K resolution: they have not yet been fully tested and may suffer from childhood illnesses.
