How to connect a universal remote control to a Philips TV: codes, instructions

How to set up a universal remote control for a Philips TV? Almost every TV owner has encountered the problem of losing or breaking the remote control (RC). After that, I had to look for my model and buy a new one. What about universal devices that can be used both with other TVs and with other equipment in general? It is convenient, practical, and in 2021 most people buy just such multifunctional remote controls.

How to find out the TV code

The Philips TV code for the universal remote is a complex combination that you will need to enter to verify your identity. At home, this is not always a necessary and important operation. But if Smart TV is hanging in some establishment, then there will probably be jokers who want to change the channel or even turn off the equipment. So this is a simple precaution. A list of unique combinations can be found in the manual for the remote control tool, in the instructions for the TV itself, or on the manufacturer’s website.

To find the code via TV:

  • turn it on;

  • press the TV and OK keys simultaneously and hold for 2-4 seconds;

  • press CH+ or CH– until the TV turns off;
  • After each click, pause for 3-4 seconds;
  • After reboot, click on TV and save the programming combination.

To enter, point the remote control at TV, press and hold TV and OK at the same time. Then enter the combination and save.

Finding Your Code

If your device does not respond to the remote control after trying all the listed codes for your brand, or if your brand is not listed, try searching for your code. For example, to search for a code for your TV: 1. Slide the mode switch to the TV position.2. Press and hold MUTE, then press SELECT (for 5 seconds until the LED blinks twice) and release both buttons.3. Enter 9 9 1. The LED will blink twice.4. Enter the device identification code according to the table in the “Device Programming” section.5. Point the remote at the TV and press Power. The remote will send an infrared code from its library to the selected device, starting with the most popular codes. If the TV responds, go to step 6. If the TV does not respond, press CH UP. The remote will try the following code. Continue until the TV starts to respond. NOTE: Press CH DOWN to try the previous code.6. To lock in code, press SELECT once. The LED will blink twice.7. To search for other device codes, repeat steps 1-6, replacing the appropriate mode (key) for the device.

Smartphones with universal remote control function

How to set up a universal remote control for a Philips TV? UPDU is a fairly popular gadget. Its advantage is that it pairs perfectly with different TV models and is easy to reconfigure. To do this, you do not need to involve specialists or learn certain skills. All you need is instructions and the device itself. An alternative option is to use a smartphone to remotely debug control of processes and commands.

Codes for remote controls by brand

How do original remote controls differ from universal ones?

The original ones are those that come with the TV. They are of high quality, guaranteed to work (since their performance is tested at the factory), but they only support one set of commands. But they are released only during the warranty period for the model. When TVs are discontinued, it becomes difficult to get remotes for them.

Universal ones are those in whose memory the signals of all remote controls from different manufacturers are embedded. And you can switch between them. More advanced models of universal remote controls also support manual programming mode. That is, the user can assign any command to each button.

A convenient option if you plan to use the remote control not only to control the TV, but also other existing equipment in the house.

And, as a rule, universal remote controls are several times cheaper than the original ones, although they have more functionality. This explains their popularity.

How to find out the TV code

The first step is to find the pairing code. It is different for each company. You can find the Philips TV code for the universal remote control:

  • in the instructions for the remote control itself;
  • in the paper version of the manual;
  • in the online manual on the manufacturer's website.

For the fitting method, use the following values: 0021, 0061, 0151, 0291, 0301, 0331, 0391, 0661, 1021, 0931, 1391, 1401, 1571, 1081, 2511.

These combinations differ for each company and model, so you need to check with the official resources of the manufacturer.

Setting up a universal remote control for your Philips TV

There are several ways to help establish contact between UPDU and technology:

  • automatic - a scan is started here and the contact is automatically identified;
  • manual - to manually pair, you will need to specify some parameters;
  • without code - using quick debugging or using the built-in remote control on a smartphone.

The performance and number of available functions do not depend on which debugging format you choose.

Ask a Question

Automatic

To quickly connect a universal remote control to a Philips TV, it is best to use automatic debugging.

Take the remote control in your hands and dial 9999. When you press the “9” key for the last time, hold it down and hold it until the TV turns off. This method is used if the code for your device brand is not in the list of brands. Further actions are performed according to the following algorithm:

  • turn on the TV;
  • point the control source at it;
  • press the power key and hold this key;
  • when the volume icon appears on the screen, click to increase or decrease the sound level;
  • If there is a reaction, it means the setup was successful.

If you don’t get the result, try repeating the action a few more times.

Manual

For this option you will need a pairing code. Perform the steps in this order:

  • turn on the TV;
  • hold down the “C” and “Setup” keys;
  • release when the indicator light responds;
  • enter the code in the window that opens;
  • confirm;
  • Check operation using the volume level keys.

No code

For pairing without code, there is only one option - automatic debugging.

Checking codes

If you have set up the remote use procedure in the Find Your Code section, you can find out which four-digit code works with your device.

For example, to find out what code is for your TV: 1. Slide the mode switch to TV2 position. Press and hold MUTE, then press SELECT (for 5 seconds until the LED blinks twice) and release both buttons.3. Enter 9 9 0. The LED will blink twice.4. To view the code for the first digit, press 1. Count the number of times the LED blinks (for example, blink 3 times) and write down that number. NOTE: If the code digit is zero, the LED will not flash.5. Repeat step 4 for the three remaining digits, using 2 for the second digit, 3 for the third digit, and 4 for the fourth digit.6. To test for other device codes, repeat steps 1-5, replacing the appropriate mode (key) for each device you test.

Smartphones with universal remote control function

A good alternative to UPDU is a regular smartphone. Almost every phone has pre-installed software that will help you find contact with an air conditioner, multimedia set-top box, music center and other equipment with an interface. There you won’t have to use a code to find a contact, you just need to point the infrared port in the appropriate direction.

Equipment manufacturers try to provide each of their devices with a remote control so that the user can conveniently use their products. You don’t need to get up to turn off the lights, adjust the air conditioner, fan, or turn on/off the TV; you can do everything while sitting on the couch. This is, of course, convenient, but over time, coffee tables become cluttered with different remote controls, which creates a certain amount of confusion and irritation.

If you don’t yet know that there is a universal remote control that can be configured to control several devices at once, then in this article we will tell you about all its capabilities and provide instructions on how to use it and how to configure it correctly.

Hiding TV Input

WARNING: Changing TV Input settings may affect the performance of your TV cable/Satellite system. Please read these instructions completely before making any changes.

You can turn off the TV Input selection. This can be useful if one device (such as SAT) provides incoming TV signals. NOTE: The TV Input key only works for a TV programmed in TV mode.

1. Slide the mode switch to the SAT position.2. Press and hold MUTE, then press SELECT (for 5 seconds until the LED blinks twice) and release both buttons.3. Enter 9 6 0. The LED will blink twice. Repeat these steps to turn TV Input back on.

What is a universal remote control

If you have become a happy user of digital television, then a new device with a remote control has appeared in your apartment - a set-top box-receiver. And in order not to add another remote control to your everyday life, let's figure out how to use a universal remote control.

Despite all the breakthroughs in technology, remote control devices have not changed at all. They may have different shapes, but the design of any remote control still consists of a housing, an electronic circuit, buttons, LEDs, and an autonomous power supply.

The universal remote control has an identical internal structure, only it can be configured to control several devices at once. For example, having purchased such a device, you can put the television, set-top box and multimedia remote control in the closet, and register all their functions in a universal remote control.

Can any remote control be universal? No. Although they are similar in appearance, their internal electronic circuitry is different. Only devices designed for this purpose can be configured to control multiple devices.

Installing batteries.

Your DirecTV 4 remote runs on 2 AA batteries (included with the remote).

Battery usage and safety:

  • Use only new batteries of the correct size and recommended type.
  • Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries (standard, alkaline or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries of different wattages.
  • If you are not going to use the remote control for an extended period, remove the batteries. They can oxidize, which can damage electronic parts. WARNING: Dispose of used batteries properly. Do not burn or bury them.

Battery installation:

  1. Open the cover (located on the back of the remote control)
  2. Install AA batteries as directed on the bottom of the power supply container, observing + and - polarity.
  3. Close the lid. NOTE: When the DirecTV 4 remote stops working properly, remove the batteries for 10 minutes (to protect programming information)

The difference between the original and universal remote control

A TV remote control, for example, a Tricolor TV, is a useless device in itself; it can only be used in conjunction with another device - a television receiver, for which it was created.

The operating principle of the remote control is based on three actions:

  • When you press a button on a device, you mechanically activate a microcircuit that creates a specific sequence of electrical impulses;
  • The LED element of the remote control converts the received command into infrared radiation with a wavelength of 0.75-1.4 microns, and sends the signal to the associated device;
  • The TV has a phototransistor that detects this IR signal and converts it into its own electrical impulse, transmits it to its control unit, due to which the command you have given is executed.

The communication method used in remote controls is called PCM, or Pulse Code Modulation. Its peculiarity is that each command is assigned a separate 3-bit sequence, for example:

000 – turn off the TV; 001 – select the next channel; 010 – return the previous channel; 011 – increase volume; 100 – reduce volume; 111 – turn on the TV, etc.

That is, when you press a button on the remote control, the electronic circuit turns on the IR LED in accordance with a given pattern: “111” - ON, ON, ON, with a clear signal step length, for example, 3 milliseconds. If you selected the volume button, which has code 011, then the LED will perform three such actions with a predetermined delay: turn off, turn on, and turn on again.

There are three different types of remote controls on the market:

  • Original;
  • Unoriginal;
  • Universal.

Original and non-original remote controls are control devices created for one specific model of technical devices. The only difference is that the first type is produced by the native manufacturing plant where the TV itself was assembled, while non-original remote controls are produced by different companies under license.

Universal remote controls (UPDU) are learnable control devices that:

  • Can be customized;
  • Suitable for many TV models;
  • Can be used instead of a lost remote control for any technical device.

A universal remote control can be chosen by shape, size, color, design, depending on personal preferences. Inside such a device there is a special program and a special code base that allow you to determine signals from almost any TV.

The most common brands of universal remote controls are Supra, Huayu and Beeline.

Changing a Channel Lock

WARNING: Changing channel lock settings may affect the operation of your cable TV/Satellite system. Please read these instructions completely before making any changes.

DirecTV 4 - The remote comes preset allowing independent channel control of each selected device. However, you can change the Channel Lock settings so that the Satellite Receiver's channel keys (SAT mode only) will control channels in all other modes. NOTE: You can lock channels in AV1/AV2 modes if these modes are set for the Satellite Receiver.

How to find out the TV code

To set up a universal remote control for your TV, it is advisable to know the three- or four-digit code of a specific model. You can find such codes either in the technical data sheet of the TV, or on the website of the equipment manufacturer, or in special reference tables. It’s called “Code for setting up the remote control.”

But how to set up the remote control for your TV if you couldn’t find the right model code for your model? For this purpose, each UPDU has an automatic configuration function with software code search. Simply press the desired combination of numbers, after which the auto-selection command will start.

Common problems and their solutions

The most common problem faced by users of universal remote controls is unauthorized reset of their settings. All data is stored in volatile memory. This means that after removing the batteries, a factory reset is performed. After this, you will need to configure again.

Also, the button icons do not always correspond to the specified functions of the universal remote control. It should be taken into account that in total there are over 160 sets of commands used in remote controls with infrared sensors. And some of them are combined in TV from different manufacturers.

Therefore, remote control developers simply cannot write icons that correspond to absolutely all TV models. In such cases, it is recommended to use manual programming mode for each button (if supported). Or use a smartphone with an IrDA port.

It is quite possible that the universal remote control will not have all the buttons to control the TV. New TV models are released regularly and updated features are added to them. It is also impossible to foresee this.

In summary, codes for remote controls are most often needed to configure universal remote controls. This is often the only opportunity to control an outdated TV model that has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

Smartphones with universal remote control function

Did you know that the latest models of some smartphones already have a universal remote control function? You don’t have to buy another remote control, but simply set up your phone to control all the devices in your apartment, but only those that have the SMART option.

To set up a universal remote control on your smartphone, you will have to visit the Play Store and download the mobile application. There are many of them, so read the reviews and install the one that suits you best.

After starting the program, you will be offered a list of equipment (set-top box, media streamer, TV, player, smart home, etc.). Choose what you want to control. Next you will need to indicate the manufacturer and pairing method (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared).

The program will start searching for equipment, and as soon as you see the name of your equipment on the phone screen, select it. A special confirmation code will appear on the TV display, which you will have to enter into the program on your smartphone. Now you have in your hands not just a phone, but also a control panel.

This installation is extremely simple and straightforward. All instructions appear sequentially on the phone, and all you have to do is confirm your actions. For such a setup, you do not need to know the code and automatic search is also not required. Remote communication is established using the selected wireless communication technology with specific devices in your apartment.

Having a single control panel for all equipment in the house is very convenient. And as you understand from our article, setting up a universal remote control is quite simple and quick.

There are quite a few comments about the quality of the remote control on a Philips TV, namely:

The remote control stops working, turned on the TV, it works for a couple of minutes, and then does not respond to key presses, the Philips TV does not respond to the remote control. Only turning off the mains and turning on after 20-30 seconds helps.

Why the remote control for a Philips TV may not work and how to set up normal operation of the TV.

The question can be very simple, if you are the owner of a remote control with a keyboard, then in such a remote control the control is carried out not by infrared signals, but by radio signals. This control makes it possible to simplify interaction with the TV. Agree that typing text on the remote control while constantly monitoring its position is very difficult; in a radio-controlled remote control there is absolutely no difference where the remote control is pointed.

For proper operation of the remote control. You need to link the remote control to the TV. Each remote control has its own identifier, the TV remembers which remote control it should work with. This is necessary for proper control of the TV, because there may be a similar TV nearby, for example in a hotel. Linking the remote allows you to bind the remote control to a specific TV. But for the remote control to work correctly, you need to perform the binding procedure to the TV. This is not difficult, but nevertheless, if it is not done, then these are the problems with the operation of the TV.

Changing the volume lock

WARNING: Changing the volume lock settings may affect the performance of your TV cable/Satellite system. Please read these instructions completely before making any changes.

DirecTV 4 - The remote comes preset to allow independent volume control of each selected device (Master Volume Unlock). However, you can change the Volume Lock settings to Master Volume Lock so that the volume of one device controls the volume of all other modes. After this, perform Individual Volume Unlock on the selected device to set its volume for independent operation. NOTE: You cannot lock the volume in SAT mode, or in AV1/AV2 modes if these modes are set for the Satellite Receiver.

Volume Lock for One Mode (General Volume Lock) 1. Slide the mode switch to the position of the device you want to use to control the volume.2. Press and hold MUTE, then press SELECT (for 5 seconds until the LED blinks twice) and release both buttons.3. Enter 9 9 3 and then press SELECT. The LED will blink twice. Now, when you press VOL+, VOL-, or Mute, the selected device (for example, TV) will adjust the volume regardless of the current mode.

Unlocking Volume for a Single Device (Individual Unlock Volume) 1. After performing General Volume Lock (see above), slide the mode switch to the device you want to unlock for volume control.2. Press and hold MUTE, then press SELECT (for 5 seconds until the LED blinks twice) and release both buttons.3. Enter 9 9 3 and then press VOL-. The LED will flash 4 times.4. Repeat steps 1-3 for any other devices you want to have independent volume control.

Unlocking Total Volume Control (Restore Master Unlock) 1. Press and hold MUTE, then press SELECT (for 5 seconds until the LED blinks twice) and release both buttons.2. Enter 9 9 3 and then press VOL+. The LED will flash 4 times. Self-controlled volume for all programmable devices.

Pairing (binding) the remote control (new Philips TV)

How to link the remote control to a Philips TV. In order for the remote control to interact with the TV, they must be paired. After this, it will be impossible to control another TV using this remote control. When you turned on the TV for the first time, you were prompted to press the OK button on the remote control. This established pairing of the remote control with the TV. When you turn off the TV's power, the pairing remains. The TV can store pairing information for 5 remote controls.

Re-pairing the remote control and Philips TV

The TV can be paired with another remote control. If the remote control has already been paired with another TV, the pairing method will be different from the method used if the remote control has not yet been paired (new remote control).

The remote control is already paired with another TV.

To establish pairing, place the remote control a short distance from the Philips logo on the TV (approximately 10 cm) and press the  (red) and  (blue) buttons simultaneously. Be sure to place the remote control near the logo. There is a radio signal receiver in this place and pairing can only occur if the signal level is sufficient. This is protection against accidental pairing of the remote control and the TV (this action can only be performed specifically). If the pairing is successful, a message will appear on the TV screen indicating that the pairing of the remote control and the TV has been successfully completed.

The remote control is not yet paired with the TV

To pair, place the remote control a short distance from the Philips logo (approximately 10 cm) and press OK. A message indicating pairing was successful will be displayed. For stores: To pair a new, not yet paired TV with a remote control that has already been paired with another TV, press the red  and blue  buttons simultaneously while holding the remote control nearby.

Some problems with remote controls can be solved by linking the remote control to the TV.

Causes of failure

The technician can identify the problem in a few minutes, but he will use special tools and equipment. Ordinary users may not have such knowledge and skills, so they are forced to turn to specialists for help. But you shouldn’t make hasty conclusions and immediately run to the nearest workshop in panic. The reason for the failure may be so trivial that to restore the device you will need to perform a few simple steps.

The most common causes of remote control failure include the following:

  1. Low batteries. It is recommended to replace the batteries or check the functionality of the old ones. Using a voltmeter or tester, you need to measure the power source. The minimum indicator should be at 1.3 V.
  2. Different signal frequency. You need to pair it with your TV receiver. If the device is used simultaneously for several electronic devices, you need to make a separate connection for each.
  3. Some buttons may not work. The cause is usually dirt or moisture, but sometimes it is due to mechanical damage resulting from a fall or impact.
  4. When you press one of the keys, the command of the other is executed.
  5. The malfunction lies in the operation of the TV itself.

If the user spills liquid on the device, it is recommended to disassemble it and clean it. Water becomes a short circuit catalyst, and when it settles under the rubber components, it forms a sticky consistency. The sticky layer on the contacts must be removed with a soft cloth soaked in alcohol, or use a cotton swab for this purpose.

Why does the TV receiver not respond to the remote control module?

To find the reason why your Philips TV does not respond to the remote control, it is recommended to follow these steps:

  1. The first step is to check whether the TV itself responds to the button command. You can do a reset by unplugging all wires and accessories such as antenna cable, HDMI cable, CI+ module.
  2. Next, unplug the power cable from the socket and leave the TV turned off for a few minutes; the LED indicator should go off.
  3. After connecting the power plug, you should try to start the receiver using the remote control module.
  4. Change batteries. Batteries have their own service life; discharged cells will need to be replaced with new ones.

If the TV does not start, the cause of the problem lies in the remote control itself. If the receiver turns on, you need to reconnect all cables and accessories. It is better to check each external device, it may cause the plasma panel not to respond to signals from the remote control module.

The functionality of the remote control can be checked using one simple test. You will need a smartphone equipped with a digital camera. The human eye is not able to recognize infrared radiation, but a mobile phone with its camera turned on will notice it. This recommendation is not suitable for owners of an iPhone or iPad, since these gadgets are equipped with a special infrared filter. You need to do the following:

  • Having activated the camera of the mobile device, point the indicator light of the remote control module at its lens;
  • Press any button on the remote control, for example, the channel switching key.

The LED on the TV receiver that lights up will tell you that the remote control is working properly. If the LED does not respond, the remote control must be repaired or replaced.

Device programming

DirecTV 4 - The remote comes pre-programmed to control low latency DTV Models S001 - S004. For devices of other brands than default, follow these steps; otherwise, skip this section.

Before proceeding, find the codes for the devices you want to program in Factory Codes and write them down or highlight them. NOTE: To program TV/DVD, TV/Video/DVD, or TV/Video, use AV1 or AV2 mode.

  • Satellite receivers 0;
  • TV 1;
  • Video and DVD players 2;
  • Audio amplifiers or audio amplifier/tuners 3.

5. Enter the first four-digit device code. The LED will blink once for each digit entered. If the code is correct, the LED will blink twice. NOTE: If the LED does not blink twice, repeat steps 2-5 and try entering the code again.6. Point the remote at the device and press Power (or PLAY if there is no Power button). The device should turn off. If it doesn't, repeat steps 2-6, trying each code for your brand until you find one that works. If you can't find a code that works, see "Finding Your Code".7. Repeat steps 1-6 for each device you want to control. For future reference, write down every working device code in a safe place.

Do-it-yourself device repair

Experienced users can independently determine the malfunction of the remote control module and, if the problem is minor, carry out repairs. Armed with a thin lancet, you need to open the lid around the entire perimeter. The upper part, together with the keyboard, can be easily separated; under it there will be a board with buttons. The keys are made of plastic, and on the inside they are covered with thin metal.

The contact group is separated from the board; this must be done carefully. The operating condition of the buttons is checked using a tester. Two contactors will need to simultaneously press the desired button. If a short circuit occurs, the device will begin to play a sound signal, and its absence will indicate a malfunction of the buttons.

The problem of wear of the metal coating can be solved independently. For repairs, it is recommended to use a special conductive silver-based adhesive. A little adhesive is applied to the tip of a toothpick, after which the inside of the keys is painted over. After the glue has dried, the tester should show satisfactory results. Next, reassembly is performed, the contacts are aligned in their places with the board, and the case is snapped in place around the entire perimeter. You can check the operating status of the remote control module using the camera on your phone.
