CHANGER - USB

programmable remote control. Depending on the model of the remote control, it allows you to control 4 devices, contains 48 buttons, the number of which doubles using the SHIFT service button. This remote control can be programmed both online on the manufacturer’s website and on your own computer using the RCCreator program, the database of which contains more than 4,000 firmware starting from BQS and GBS remote controls of the 80s, to the latest LCD TV, LED TV, DVD players, satellite tuners, home theaters and car radios supporting TV and DVD. The remote controls are made only from high-quality materials in accordance with ISO9001-2000, and in terms of their quality characteristics they are not inferior to the original remote controls.

As a rule, the system of commands transmitted by the remote control of a TV, TV receiver or music center is individual for this type of equipment. This allows you to avoid unwanted cross-switching from a “foreign” remote control. But when there are many managed devices, this becomes inconvenient. Especially if the room is large and there are several viewing points. A universal remote control can help in this situation.

.

Universal remote controls allow you to control several devices of different types (TV, DVD, digital receiver, audio system). Some manufacturers equip their products with such remote controls (for example, satellite receivers). The functionality of a universal remote control is determined by the ability to reprogram it to support control of devices manufactured by various manufacturers.

Universality is achieved in two ways: - using predefined code tables; — direct copying of control commands from an existing conventional remote control into the memory of the universal remote control. Universal remote controls equipped with a command copying function are called “ learnable”

».

Design

Remote Changer RC USB 4v1

housed in a small black plastic case. Case dimensions 194 x 48 x 18 mm.

The remote control weighs no more than conventional (non-programmable) remote controls. There is a recess on the bottom cover of the case that makes it easier to hold the remote control in your hand. The surface of the case is matte, dirt-repellent. The remote control keyboard consists of 48 buttons

. The keyboard buttons are located strictly symmetrically, the body is also symmetrical, so the remote control is equally convenient to use, holding it in your right or left hand. The remote control buttons are pressed softly. Tactile feedback is good.

Keyboard buttons are grouped into zones according to their functional purpose. The buttons for each zone are different sizes and shapes. The navigation circle is located exactly in the center, the numeric keypad buttons are at the top, and the service selection buttons are at the bottom. To expand the functionality of existing buttons, the Shift prefix button can be used.

There is a small area of 8 buttons labeled MINI TV. This is a minimal set of buttons for controlling viewing (switching programs, changing the volume level, confirming the installation, selecting a low-frequency input, muting the sound, switching to standby mode).

In the very bottom row of the keyboard there are buttons for selecting the controlled device: TV, DVD, SAT and AUX

.

Most of the keyboard buttons are black. The Power, Shift buttons and a group of functional (“colored”) buttons are highlighted in color. The Power button is backlit, which turns on when the command assigned to the programmed button is sent. There are clear, easy-to-read symbols on the keyboard and the remote control body that describe the functions of the buttons.

On the front (upper) part of the case there is a logo and the name of the remote control modification (“4:1”). mini USB connector socket

, used to communicate with a computer. The remote control is powered by three AAA batteries.

Console question

Probably, many have forgotten, and some did not even know, about the times when, in order to change the channel, you had to go to the TV and turn the tight channel selector knob. Inside there was a characteristic click from the turning drum. Gone are those days. Since then, the remote control has become an indispensable attribute of consumer electronics.

Due to their low price and optimal parameters, infrared remote controls are most widespread. It's common to have several remote controls on the coffee table. As a result, at some point the process of switching between different devices begins to resemble juggling. And each new device complicates the situation. Of course, you can improve your dexterity, increase your skill, but when you return home after a hard day at work, you just want to fall on the couch and relax while watching your favorite channel or movie. I’ve been meaning to clean up the remote controls in my home for a long time, but I never got around to it. Persistent requests from friends to help me choose a universal remote control pushed me to find a solution to this issue and write this article. Having studied the offers in household appliance stores, it turned out that there was nothing to choose from (at this point my face began to look like a sad smiley face). Everything is surprisingly poor and meager. Ultra-budget Chinese remote controls without a name were not considered as a class. But the rest of the universal remote controls from well-known brands were either disliked by their design, low functionality, or high price. And on this unoptimistic note, my story could have ended, but a solution was found on the Internet.

In one of the online stores, my attention was drawn to an accessory for devices running the iOS operating system with an unusual name - Griffin Beacon. In appearance, this device looked more like a piece of modern art or an alien object than a universal remote control. After reading the description of the technical characteristics and capabilities of the device, it turned out that this was exactly what I was looking for. Griffin Beacon, using a BlueTooth connection, receives commands from the iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad and converts them into IR rays, thereby replacing remote controls.

The body of the Griffin Beacon is made of black plastic and is divided into two parts. The lower part of the body is made of matte opaque plastic. The upper part is made of smooth plastic that transmits infrared rays. There are no visible controls. At the bottom there is a cover covering the battery compartment, as well as four rubber feet. Autonomous power supply from four AA type elements.

There were no problems connecting the Griffin Beacon to the iPad, although there is a little secret. If you simply install batteries in the Griffin Beacon and enable BlueTooth in the iPad settings, the list of connections in the list of available devices will be empty. I even started to think: maybe the device is faulty? I really didn't want to look at the instructions. Logic dictated that there should still be a button on the case, and it is there. In order to put the Griffin Beacon into the “Search” mode, you need to place it on a flat surface and press it from above with your hand. There is a hidden button between the two parts of the case. Then a new device, “Beacon,” will appear in the list of available BlueTooth devices on the iPad.

To configure and manage, you need to install a free application from the AppStore - Dijit . When you first launch the application, you are prompted to register or enter your Facebook account information. The authors of the application honestly report that this is necessary to inform the user about various promotions and offers from the manufacturer. That's why I skipped this stage. Next are several dialogs related to the list of equipment that will be controlled from the tablet. Although the application interface is not Russified, even an inexperienced user can figure it out.

If, when initially adding equipment, a suitable ready-made profile was not found from the extensive list of models grouped by manufacturer, the remote control can be added manually. Remotes are grouped by room name and type of use. When you add a new button, a scrolling list of ready-made buttons opens. The position of the buttons on the screen and their names can be changed. Training (reading) occurs through Griffin Beacon. When the Dijit app on your tablet is ready to read the button code from the remote, a hint on how to position the remote is displayed on the screen. After this, you need to press the selected button. You can place the buttons of one remote control on several screens; this allows you, even if the buttons are large enough, to place all the necessary buttons.

Griffin Beacon software is updated using another free application that can also be installed from the AppStore - Griffin Utility

The price of Griffin Beacon in Ukraine is about 550 UAH. For me, this is the maximum amount I am willing to spend for a universal remote control.

  • Advantages and disadvantages of such a solution:
  • Flexibility of customization (changing the number of buttons, their size and labels)
  • Ability to read button code (training)
  • Unlimited number of remotes
  • Slight delay when transmitting the command
  • Replace batteries every 1-2 months

On the developer's website, there is information about the version of Griffin Beacon for smartphones and tablets running Android OS.

If a tablet is not suitable as a universal remote control for some reason, there is another interesting solution. At first glance, this is an ordinary IR remote control, but everything is not so simple. Unlike conventional learning remotes, Changer 4:1 has a mini USB port. Setting up and downloading codes occurs using a computer. A similar principle is used in Logitech's Harmony series universal remotes.

The user has two options for controlling the remote control: using a small application - RCCreator, which is available on the developer's website, or directly in the Internet browser window, but for this a Java client must be installed on the system.

The remote control is made of black matte plastic with rubber buttons. The size is quite large. Buttons of different shapes are conveniently located. The case does not creak when pressing buttons. The remote control feels comfortable in the hand, and the buttons are pressed softly. The remote control is powered by three AAA batteries.

The software is intuitive. There are detailed instructions in Russian. The database with ready-made remote control settings is divided by brand, device type, model and is constantly updated, which is good news. If a suitable model is not found, the button codes can be read from the remote control. Remote controls added by the user are saved in a separate list.

The Changer 4:1 remote control can control four different devices. The “Shift” modifier button allows you to assign two different commands to each button. Separately, I would like to note the group of buttons designated as “Mini TV”. These buttons repeat the keys of the same name defined for the “first” device, which allows you to select the type of video input on the TV or adjust the volume without unnecessary switching. I was especially pleased with the affordable price, about 80 hryvnia.

  • Advantages and disadvantages of such a solution:
  • User-friendly software in Russian
  • Ability to read button code (training)
  • Mini TV button group
  • Ability to assign two commands to one button (Shift button)
  • Limited number of supported devices (four in total)

The goal has been achieved - instead of three remote controls, there is one on my coffee table - Changer 4:1. And on the bookshelf opposite the TV there is a small art object - Griffin Beacon. Since the tablet is not always in the same room, I decided to leave both options. Yes, that's it! I hope my experience will be useful in solving the “remote control issue”.

Preparation for use

To work with the remote control, you will need a computer, the RCCreator program (you can download it) and a USB - mini USB cable. The RCCreator program is specifically designed for programming remote controls manufactured by . The program also has a number of additional service capabilities that allow you to expand the functionality of Changer remote controls. From there you can also download an archive of photos of remote controls that is connected to the RCCreator program database.

The system requirements for the computer on which you can install the RCCreator program will be satisfied by almost any platform:

  • Pentium II processor or AMD equivalent;
  • 128 MB RAM, 800x600 screen;
  • operating system MS Windows XP;
  • Windows Vista or Windows 7.

When you start programs, the search function for updates of the program itself and the database is automatically turned on. During testing of the remote control, the database was updated several times. The RCCreator program interface is simple and intuitive. The program supports the choice of interface language (12 available languages, including Russian and Ukrainian). The language can be selected during the installation process of the program or assigned while the application is running.

On the left side of the program window there is a block for selecting parameters for database filters and modifying the Changer remote control. Searching for data on known remote control models can be carried out using the manufacturer's database, a user-created database, or all available databases.

The filter allows you to:

  • Set a brand. The database supplied with the RCCreator program contains data on remote control models for video and audio equipment produced by various manufacturers.
  • Select device type. Devices about which there is information in the database are divided into 19 categories (TV, SAT, DVR, HiFi, AUX, VCR and others). To use the filter, you can specify several types of devices from this list.
  • Specify the device model. The remote control data selected by the search filter can be saved as an XML file. Previously created remote control database files can be imported into the currently used database.

To use the program with the Changer universal remote control, you need to select its modification. The program provides the ability to select four types of Changer USB remotes: TV, DVD, SAT and 4:1. In the right part of the program window, a table of correspondence of control commands to the buttons of the selected remote control, an image of the type of universal Changer remote control with binding of the buttons of the selected remote control to the buttons of the Changer remote control are displayed. By switching to the “Pictures” tab, you can display the image of the remote control selected by the search filter. Information about the selected remote control (its image, the correspondence of the keyboard layout to the buttons of the universal Changer remote control) can be printed from the RCCreator program in the form of a kind of “business card” of the remote control.

When connecting the Changer RC USB 4v1

to the computer's USB port, the OS identified it as a USB HID-compatible device. The system installed the drivers automatically. The RCCreator program detects the presence of a Changer RC remote control connected to the computer.

Reading codes

Changer RC USB remote control + RCCreator program allows you to read IR commands generated by any remote control. Mode for receiving commands from an unknown remote control and decoding them. To “remove commands,” the IR emitter of an unknown remote control is located at a distance of 3-5 cm from the receiving window of the Changer RC

. Reception of IR commands is indicated by the illumination of the Power button on the Changer RC universal remote control. The program window displays the status of the received command. If the command is decrypted, its hexadecimal code is displayed. An indicator of successfully received commands is also displayed on the screen. When reading the same control command repeatedly (this can be achieved by long pressing the keyboard buttons of the remote control being read), several indicators of received messages light up. By switching to the “Oscilloscope” tab, you can view oscillograms of the received command, address decoding and commands in binary code.

If the IR command fails to be received, “UNKNOWN” will be displayed on the screen. This happens when the optical IR signal of the remote control being read is insufficient for reliable reception by the IR sensor of the Changer RC remote control (for example, if the distance between the remote controls is more than 5 cm), or when pressing the keyboard buttons is not long enough.

Finding and creating remote controls

“Removed” command codes can be used to search the existing database for the device model to which this remote control corresponds, or when creating a command card for a new remote control. The Search tab displays the hexadecimal code of the “removed” command and the buttons with which this code can be associated. The list of buttons includes the most important and common types of control commands found on almost every remote control: Power, Mute, Menu, OK, numeric keypad buttons and some others. Once the user points to one of these buttons, the accepted code is associated with it and the program automatically starts searching the selected database for a match. By sequentially reading the codes of several buttons on an unknown remote control, you can associate several buttons in the “Search” submenu with them. To increase the accuracy of your search, you can use a preset filter by specifying the manufacturer or model name. If a match to the “remote control-command” combination is found in the database, then a list of corresponding devices is displayed in the program window. If there are several such devices (for example, if the “removable” remote control can control several devices), on the “Links” tab you can see a list of all these devices. This combination can correspond to the previously prepared “firmware” of the Changer RC universal remote control, which is written in the database as “Changer XXXX”, where “XXXX”

— code of this remote control combination.

The right panel of the program window of the “Home” tab displays a table of correspondence between the command codes of the found device and the names of the function buttons. The image of the “4:1” universal remote control shows the buttons that are assigned to commands when using the Changer RC remote control. Testing has shown that even without a filter, the program correctly determines the manufacturer, device model and type of remote control of various products (TVs, satellite receivers, audio devices).

A “removable” remote control can be saved in the database as a new one. The procedure for creating a remote control is very simple. You need to read the codes of the buttons of the “removable” remote control one by one, give each of them a name and associate the read button with the button of the Changer RC remote control. To expand the functionality of assignable buttons, you can use the “Shift” prefix. Then you can associate two commands with the universal remote control button: one formed after pressing Shift, the other without it.

The names of the buttons can be edited at your discretion. If required, its image is attached to the remote control saved in the database. The supported image formats are BMP, JPG and PNG.

How can you make a copy of the remote control yourself, having the original in your hands?

There are different types of remotes designed specifically for copying a code cipher. They may differ in external design, frequency range and list of supported devices. Thus, some duplicators are intended for copying dynamic code, while others are intended for solving other problems. The principle of their operation depends on the installed microcircuit.

There are also specialized models operating at frequencies of 433.92 MHz or 868 MHz. Transferring code from such a device is problematic. Therefore, you should consider the main options for solving the problem.

Enter the remote control into programming mode

First of all, you should activate the programming mode by holding down buttons A and B on the duplicator for 3 seconds. After the LED blinks slowly, release buttons A and B to allow the duplicator to enter programming mode. When the corresponding notification occurs, you can begin the procedure.

Let's start copying

Copying a key fob is the most difficult stage, during which many users make mistakes. Experts recommend placing devices at a short distance, using the “body to body” principle, as this will ensure clear and even reading of information. There are numerous tutorials available online where people solve the problem from a long distance, but this method is not effective.

The main remote control should be rotated so that the controls are at the bottom, and the backup device is with the keys facing up. This will allow you to monitor the copying efficiency.

Then you should press the main button of the main key fob and the programming key on the new remote control. During the process, you should observe the LED indications. After successful synchronization, they will begin to flicker quickly. After 2 seconds the buttons are released.

Basic mistakes and how to avoid them

A common mistake when programming a remote control is an attempt to record the following devices using the same algorithm as the main key fob. However, after such a recording, the unit erases the signal and stops responding even to the first device.

Another mistake is registering incompatible models according to generally accepted instructions. For devices from different manufacturers there is a special manual with a detailed description of the programming procedure.

"Virtual remote control" and programming

The Changer RC remote control can control various devices both independently and in collaboration with the RCCreator program. Remote control mode via the RCCreator program. In this mode, the remote control must be connected to the computer's USB port. A suitable remote control is selected from the RCCreator program database and the “Virtual remote control” mode is activated.

The emitter of the Changer RC remote control is directed towards the controlled device. The image buttons of the “4:1” remote control on the “Home” tab of the RCCreator program are used as a keyboard. The issuance of the command is duplicated by the backlight of the Power button.

When used standalone as a universal device, the Changer RC USB 4v1 can be programmed to control four different products. Programming is carried out using the RCCreator program. For programming, data stored in the manufacturer's database or created by the user can be used. When programming, the remote control selected from the database can be assigned to one of the types of devices (TV, DVD, SAT, AUX). To program all four devices, you need to sequentially select them from the database and then write them into the memory of the Changer RC remote control. The programming procedure takes a few seconds. You can monitor the programming progress using the Power indicator. To delete a recorded remote control, there is a “Clear” function.

Remote control programming

We thank you for purchasing the CHANGER universal programmable remote control and hope that you will be satisfied with the performance of our remote controls.

To program the remote control, you will need a miniUSB cable, which can be purchased at any computer store, or you may already have one (currently this connector is quite widely used in phones and other devices of various brands). Before using the remote control, we strongly recommend that you follow all instructions step by step.

Remote control programming instructions

Download the latest version of the RCCreator installer from our website. Run the installer. Select the installation folder and other options. For correct operation of the program, it is recommended to agree with all options of the program installer.

Programming the remote control must be carried out with the batteries installed.

The first thing you need to do is find the desired remote control and determine what type of ChangerUSB it is in. And connect this particular type of Changer for firmware.

This is the main thing you need to understand in programming. I'll tell you how to do it. Select the firmware by highlighting it with the cursor. We move on to the next window located in the middle of the program and determine the type of remote control (Changer) for the firmware. To do this, we sort through the devices, from top to bottom.

If you have selected the device correctly, something like the following figure should appear. Button name or button ID.

After this has been found out, you need to connect exactly the same Changer as in the program figure, where the button IDs and names appear.

At the bottom of the RCCreator program window there are two connection status indicators: on the left - the remote control, on the right - the signal receiver. Before you start working with the program, make sure that the icon of the device you are connecting lights up green.

If the type of firmware and the connected remote control are selected correctly, the button to program the remote control becomes active. Click (Program remote control)

Press (+) to start programming:

The red LED on the remote control lights up, which means the programming process has begun. After the diode goes out, the programming process is completed. The programming tab will show the data of the recorded remote control. After completing the programming process, close the programming window and only then disconnect the remote control from the miniUSB cord.

All that remains is to print the instructions by clicking on the Printer icon in the program. All. The remote control is ready to control the device for which it was programmed.

Service capabilities of the program

AUTOMATIC SEARCH - under development

SEARCH BY BUTTONS is a search for interchangeable remote controls that have the same signal, both from the same manufacturer and from others, in a similar or different type of remote control housing. Open the search tab, remove the “POWER” button signal from the remote control, the button signal will be displayed digitally at the top left of the tab. press the “POWER” button in the “SEARCH” tab, a list of remote controls that match the signals of the “POWER” button will be displayed on the left. It is recommended to use the signals of the following buttons for searching - “POWER, 1, VOL +, CH +, OK, “.

SEARCH BY PROTOCOL is a search based on signals from remote control buttons that are not in the “SEARCH” tab. there are 2 buttons for this […], the search process is similar to searching by buttons.

SEARCH BY BUTTONS AND PROTOCOL OF A REMOTE AVAILABLE IN THE DATABASE - used when the remote control is already in the program database, and you need to select either an analogue or compare it with another remote control available in the database. select the desired remote control in the program, highlight the desired button with the mouse so that on the CHANGER remote control on the right it becomes active and its numerical value is displayed in the signal indicator field. Open the "SEARCH" tab and paste it into the desired button. A list of analogues will be displayed on the left side of the program.

Recommendations for removing codes

Before you start removing codes from remote controls for the first time, we recommend that you read the instructions, which can be found through the “About the program” - “Help” menu.

We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with the information provided below:

After the codes of all buttons are written down, it is better to close the program through the “exit” or “cross” in the upper right corner - the information is saved when closing. The program may close with an error, resulting in the loss of the last entered data.

To be more confident in the safety of the remote controls you removed, we recommend exporting the codes to a separate folder. To do this, create, for example, a folder named “DRC” in any convenient place. After removing the remote control codes, select “File” - “Export” and specify the folder you created. For additional data protection, just in case, we highly recommend regularly making a backup copy of removed remote controls to other media. We would be very grateful if you would send the removed remote controls to our email address [email protected] Those who are especially active will receive additional discounts on remote controls.

Video setting up the Changer remote control in the RCCreator program.

The following prompted me to buy this remote control. My youngest son dropped the Iconbit MovieHD C Plus remote control

This was enough for the remote control to fail. During disassembly, it turned out that the processor sprayed onto the board did not work. Unfortunately, many control commands for this Iconbit device were only from the remote control. Having visited places where remote controls are sold and made calls to service centers, I realized that it was impossible to buy such a remote control in Belarus. And having decided that foreign countries would help us, I started looking on Aliexpress. As a result, this remote control was purchased. Then, having removed several commands from the original remote control, I found an analogue, where almost all the control buttons were. By writing a letter to the developers of this remote control

I asked them to distribute the commands to the keys I needed and enter them into the database. Thanks to them for their help.

The remote control itself

MiniUSB connector for connecting to a computer, covered with a rubber plug

The remote control is powered by 3 AAA batteries; I have not changed it in a year of use. The remote control is very economical. Assembled on a PIC controller.

Using the remote control. By downloading and installing the RCCreator program and connecting the remote control to a computer, we get a database of different remote controls and the ability to download codes for four devices. The database is extensive and is updated from the Internet, you can add your own.

You can download codes from other remote controls and save them in the database.

Information for everyone If your remote control is missing, this does not mean that you are out of luck. Mine wasn't there at first either. We are looking for a similar device, by button codes (if we managed to remove it), by brand, by purpose. Next, we write out codes from the triggered buttons, compile a table of codes corresponding to the required buttons, and send them to the remote control developer (see the preface). He makes you a remote control and enters the device into the database. How I removed the codes from my remote control. The remote control didn't work. Having disassembled it, I warmed up the controller with a hairdryer. We earned 10 out of 20 buttons, although not for long. I quickly copied them. Having native codes, it’s easiest to find a similar device.

Purpose

CHANGER USB remote controls, due to the ability to install firmware from the network, are suitable for a wide variety of radio-electronic devices: TVs, DVD players, stereo systems, tuners, and so on. To install the firmware that is suitable for your equipment, you must first read the device code or try to find the software by model number. RCCreator has a huge database of household appliances with up-to-date firmware. The database is sorted by brands, models and types. You can use filters when searching.

Working with the program

Before you begin reprogramming, you must connect the remote control via a USB port. Please note that some CHANGER models require you to remove the batteries first. After connecting the device to the required port, two indicators should light up green at the bottom of the RCCreator main window: the transmitter and the remote control itself. If this condition is met, you can begin downloading and installing the firmware.

In addition to updating the device software to work with the necessary household appliances, RCCreator is also responsible for reassigning the functions of the physical keys on the remote control. You can independently select the buttons that will be responsible for switching channels, adjusting the volume, accessing the menu, managing color parameters, and so on.

The program interface is completely translated into Russian and is very pragmatic, so even the most inexperienced users can work with it.
