Some Panasonic cameras allow you to use 4K Photo mode to shoot footage in traditional proportions, rather than in widescreen mode, as video is most often shot. Some cameras also include smart features to help you capture the best moment, such as a pre-recording mode that continuously records video and then saves 30 frames before and after you press the shutter button.

It's not always possible to extract good shots from a video, but if you intend to extract photos from a video, you will have access to manual aperture and shutter speed settings that will allow you to control the result.

It's much slower than 4K. Just as 4K increased the number of pixels by 4 times, the load on all equipment that works with data increased, namely memory cards, hard drives for storing information, and the computer processor for processing the material.

Which memory cards should I use?

4K video takes up a lot more space than Full HD, up to four times more in fact. One minute of video on some semi-professional 4K camcorders can weigh more than one gigabyte.

In order to keep up with all this data, you need fast memory cards capable of writing at least 30MB per second (which corresponds to a U3 rating on SD cards). This should allow you to record video with bitrates up to 200Mbps.

Memory cards are not as expensive as they once were, but high-speed cards still require a significant investment.

Storing 1 hour of video on different cameras

To save all the data for editing you need a large hard drive. In addition, low-RPM energy-saving drives will not be very convenient to use due to the lower speed of writing and reading data. If you use external HDDs, use devices with a USB 3.0 data transfer interface or a faster connection. Solid state drives (SSDs) are significantly faster than hard drives, but they are much more expensive.

Safe distance for watching videos on 4K screens

When watching movies recorded in 4K format, the user sees an increased number of dots compared to a standard HDTV image. To roughly calculate the distance, you can use a formula like L=a*b. In the equation, the "L" parameter indicates the calculated distance. And the “b” value refers to the diagonal of the TV screen in inches. The letter “a” denotes a correction factor equal to 2 or 3. It follows from the formula that the larger the diagonal of the screen, the greater the distance between the viewer and the screen should be. And if a display with a curved matrix is ​​used, the user is positioned along the axis of symmetry of the equipment. In this case, the position of the screen relative to the eyes is additionally taken into account.

Do I need a new computer?

Just as 4K video requires a lot more storage space, it also requires a lot more processing power to handle the load when it comes to editing the footage.

What is a pixel?

Since the concept of “4K” is closely related to the concept of “pixel,” it is worth dwelling on the definition of this mysterious foreign word. So, pixel or pixel (px) is a word originating from the English language, formed from an abbreviation of two words: “pictures”, “element”, that is, “image element”. Another decoding option: “picture cell”, which essentially means the same thing.


A pixel is the smallest two-dimensional graphic element of any digital image. This term has become widespread from raster graphics, in which the image is a mosaic of individual color dots. A feature of pixels in a raster image is the impossibility of improving an already created video sequence or picture: when such a visual object is enlarged, the pixels simply turn into large colored blurry grains arranged like steps. Of course, interpolation can smooth out an image that has turned into “mush,” but to do this you have to add new pixels, the color of which is calculated based on neighboring colored dots (squares).

What kind of monitor do you need?

You can shoot, edit and publish videos in 4K resolution, but how can you do all this if your monitor is not capable of displaying such a resolution?

If you're looking for a 4K monitor, prepare to spend a pretty penny and look for the "IPS" designation. IPS panels win when it comes to color accuracy at different viewing angles. If you already have a color-accurate monitor, you can buy an inexpensive 4K monitor to do the cropping and detail work, and do the color grading on the old monitor.

What's the difference between 4K and 1080p
