Review of LG 6 series TVs. 2013 models.

A South Korean company known for quality TVs for many years. The global brand is developing new products to maintain its leading position in the television market.

LG practically has a monopoly on OLED matrix production technology. What will LG show its users in the 2018 model year TVs? More on this later.

Since the company works exclusively with its own personal developments, this allows it to produce not only basic TV models, but also show broad capabilities, creating a small line of new products: from super thin to TV wallpaper.

Features of the 2018 LG TV lineup

The 2021 OLED TVs are launching with almost identical features as last year. The ideal black level, image brightness and color gamut functions, etc. are also preserved here. Compatibility remains for 3 basic HDR formats. All of the current year's TV models are equipped with Dolby Atmos, as are most of the 2021 TVs. HDMI 2.1 is not supported.

New for 2021 is the move of the 77″ to the more compact C8 series. At the same time, the organization’s specialists made a statement that the model will remain expensive. For example, 77″ OLED will cost over 1 million rubles. The brand has added 4 HDR formats – Advanced HDR from Technicolor, present in the 2017 LG OLED line.

What's new in 2018

The biggest step is considered to be the development of a new LG processor to process the image. The picture quality will be a cut above. Because the company’s specialists have improved all components that affect the image (noise reduction, sharpness and other parameters). The settings are present in every model except the expensive B8.

Regarding the possibility of disabling a certain processing mode, a representative of the global brand issued a statement that individual elements are presented in the user control, and they can be adjusted if necessary. It is enough to personally choose the most convenient execution algorithms for yourself.

Previously, the option to adjust the image of an LG TV was also available on models.

No less interesting is the question of the difference in cost between C8 and B8 due to the accompanying additional processing. Will the overall option be better than the processing in Sony's competitor OLED TVs? No one can say for sure yet.

New OLED TVs play videos at a fairly high frame rate. About 120 frames per second. The process is smooth, especially the difference in the moment of movement from the base video with a frequency of 60 frames per second is visible.

At the same time, there is currently no material for HFR, and company representatives convince users of the opposite. Perhaps there will be more content in this format, but not so much that TV series and programs can be safely viewed in HFR.

The film “The Hobbit” is considered a striking example of this form, although most viewers are not satisfied with the quality of the effect. Perhaps now it will be more enjoyable in action and high-speed games. Therefore, you should not refuse the purchase. Especially if you want to purchase a state-of-the-art display.

Since the B8's processor is not as powerful, the device does not reproduce HFR and HDR material. At the same time, other combinations of frame rate, resolution and HDR are handled without problems by the device. C8 and TV from the A9 range work with formats such as: 4K, HFR, HDR.

Because HDMI 2.1 is not sufficient, none of LG's 2018 OLED TVs work with HFR through external devices such as 4K Blu-ray players. As a result, HFR broadcasts of streaming or broadcast type remain.

An additional option in new models of TV devices is built-in voice control from other manufacturers.

Google Assistant user can control the TV through contextual commands. If necessary, you can request information about musicians, TV programs, weather forecasts, etc. Overall a fairly convenient control option.

If you have a Google Home wireless speaker, you can control your TV without using the remote control.

The new models will support Amazon Alexa owners regarding control. At the same time, the developers of the South Korean company's TV series note that the functional component will not be complete. Therefore, we can expect that OLED TVs from LG this year will behave according to the same principle as Sony models that offer device control through applications of this type.

Choosing a TV from LG

OLED, LED or QLED displays?

OLED technology, based on the glow of tiny organic light-emitting diodes in each pixel of the matrix, has long been the prerogative of LG's best TVs. OLED displays differ from LED displays in significantly better contrast and color accuracy, but due to the technological complexity of manufacturing, OLED displays are more expensive.

QLED technology is now used by the main competitor of LG TVs – Samsung Electronics. Taking cues from LED displays, Samsung placed a metal nanofilter based on quantum dots between the LED backlight matrix and the LCD screen, which significantly helped improve contrast. However, this technology was only able to overtake OLED displays in terms of color volume. In terms of viewing angle, response time and other parameters, OLED displays are now leading.

Type of backlight and screen structure

Screen backlighting is used in LCD TVs. Most often it comes in three types: Edge LED, Direct LED or CCFL. The last type is the illumination of an LCD screen with lamps similar in structure to conventional fluorescent lamps, but significantly smaller in size. Now this technology is considered obsolete and is practically not used in LG TVs.

The best LCD TVs from LG use Edge LED or Direct LED backlights. In the first, the LEDs are located at the edges of the screen, which is why it is also called “side lighting”. Its main advantage is that the matrix and the TV itself will be extremely thin, but glare may appear at the edges of the screen.

In Direct LED technology, LEDs are evenly distributed over the entire area behind the matrix. These TVs have a fairly high contrast level, but they are more energy-consuming, thicker and more expensive than TVs with Edge LED.

Display diagonal and refresh rate

If the diagonal of the display determines only the size of the TV, then the quality of the picture depends on the refresh rate. On large diagonal TVs - 65 inches and above - with a refresh rate of 50 Hz, the picture in complex and fast scenes will look noticeably blurry. That's why the best LG TVs rarely drop the refresh rate below 100Hz.

At a refresh rate of 200 Hz, the image quality is certainly better, but not so much that it can be easily distinguished. 100 Hz is a fairly comfortable value, and it is not always necessary to overpay significant sums for screens with a higher scan rate.

Screen resolution

The number of pixels determines how clear the image will be. In inexpensive TVs you can still find a resolution of 1366x768 pixels, but the best LG models offer pictures in Full HD (1920x1080 pixels) or Ultra HD (4K with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels). LG Electronics was one of the first to use 4K technology in its TVs. Such TVs transmit images with excellent clarity, but the disadvantage of the technology is that only a few TV channels have switched to broadcasting images of this resolution, so there is little benefit from 4K yet.

To indicate the features of the screen, the letters “p” or “i” are often indicated after the numbers. In the first case, this means that even and odd lines are displayed simultaneously. The letter “i” denotes alternate output of these lines. Visually this is almost imperceptible, but in the first case the image quality will still be higher.

Power of installed speakers and their number

Of course, watching movies and shows with good sound is much more enjoyable. Most often, LG TVs are equipped with two speakers, but the best TV models are equipped with both four and six speakers.

For small rooms, 5W speakers are sufficient, but the best LG TVs most often have 10W speakers. However, sound quality depends not only on them. For greater comfort, it is advisable that the TV have Dolby Digital and DTS sound decoders. Well, in any case, you shouldn’t expect revelations in sound quality from a TV, even an expensive one - for this you need an external audio system.

Connectors on the back and side walls

The best LG TVs have always had a large number of interfaces. Even on budget models there are usually more than enough of them.

HDMI and USB connectors are required on models from this manufacturer, and they are often placed not only on the back wall of the TV, but also on the sides for convenient connection of game consoles or flash drives. In addition, there is almost always an RJ-45 Internet port, audio output, smart card slot and other interfaces.

Additional functionality

The best LG TVs have always had a lot of additional functionality. Only budget models can lose to competitors in this indicator. The top models of this manufacturer often have “picture in picture”, automatic contrast adjustment and noise reduction systems, support for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Smart TV.

Owner complaints about breakdowns

The most common malfunctions of LG TVs are power supply failures, tuner failures and display backlight failures. In the first case, this means that the TV does not turn on the first time. This malfunction can be eliminated by simply replacing the electrolytic capacitors. If the tuner breaks down, the channel settings are lost and there is no way to reconfigure them. In this case, most likely, the tuner will have to be replaced completely. Well, the display backlight most often breaks on LG TVs of the fifth series. Fixing this problem will require replacing the LEDs.

New LG TVs 2018

The current year's range of 4K UHD TVs were presented at the LG Roadshow exposition. Already in the spring of 2021, some models were available for sale.

The company offers its customers a large entry-level range with 4K. This is a distinctive feature of the South Korean brand from its competitor Samsung.

Over 25 models are presented, with diagonals from 43 to 86. The new UHD TVs operate on the new webOS 4.0 and support ThinkQ artificial intelligence platforms. 4-core Alpha 9 processor, previously used in 2021 models.

If you are looking for a large 4K TV at an affordable price, then in the model segment of the South Korean company you can choose a TV that meets these parameters.

Next, consider a review of the 2021 LG TV series.

4K SUPER UHD TV with Nano Cell technology LG SK7900

On the eve of the World Cup, LG Electronics (LG) presented a special series of TVs for the Russian market, which included a SUPER UHD TV with Nano Cell SK7900 technology.

Unlike older models, the TV does not support Dolby Vision, Technicolor mode and Dolby Atmos sound output. A more modest quad-core processor from 2021 models. The TV in all diagonal sizes, 43/49/55 inches, has an IPS matrix with a real matrix frequency of 60 Hz:

This model is equipped with a special “Football” mode, which gives additional clarity when watching sports competitions. This mode provides improved picture and sound quality to enhance your match viewing experience.

FULL HD

The company pays more attention to the OLED line, but at the same time, updates also concern Full HD.

The most popular models are from 32 to 50 inches. Since these are the models that are considered the most affordable in terms of cost, and also these diagonals are the most convenient.

SUPER UHD 4K TVs SK8100 and SK8000

SK8000

These TV models are much closer in characteristics to the 2021 LG models, primarily due to the fact that LEDs are used as backlighting on the bottom base of the TV, the EDGE backlight type. But at the same time, just like the older SUPER UHD models, they are equipped with Nano Cell technology and have a local dimming function. The local LED dimming function on the SK8100/8000 is called “LEDIT” (LPLED). Since the diodes are placed in a single horizontal strip along the bottom edge of the screen, when they dim or go out, they form vertical zones. But the number of such zones is very small, there are six of them, so “LPLED” cannot increase the contrast. Recommendation: on these models it is better to disable Local Dimming, especially since these TVs provide such an option.

TVs in this series have a wide selection; diagonal sizes range from 49 to 75 inches.

Super UHD 4K

This is the premium segment of LG. Here we present equipment with a new level of LCD TVs. NanoCell technology is used. The essence of the new method: a layer with nanoconductors is formed on the matrix, which absorb excess light from the diodes, and completely bring the picture closer to OLED.

The best TVs in this segment are represented by 4 models:

DiagonalPrice
49″$940
55″up to 1.9 thousand dollars
65″up to 3.3 thousand dollars
86″up to 8.7 thousand dollars.

TV market specialists name these methods among major brand ones. SUHD TVs from LG are a response to QLED models produced by competing companies.

Despite the high prices, there is still something to pay for here.

Impeccable image quality

The latest α (Alpha) 9 processor from LG provides particularly realistic images thanks to a rich color palette, high sharpness and depth of the picture. The main innovative element of this processor is the four-stage noise reduction technology, which is twice as much as compared to conventional analogues. The new algorithm improves image clarity by removing distracting artifacts and ensuring smooth frame transitions.

This processor also improves color reproduction with enhanced content display capabilities that significantly enhance the realism of the colors presented on the screen. The α (Alpha) 9 processor was designed to support high frame rates, delivering smoother, clearer moving images at 120 frames per second. Thanks to this technology, LG's 2021 OLED TVs

Oled TV

The Oled line brings together the best from the manufacturer. In the process of developing screens, self-illuminating pixels based on organic light-emitting diodes are used. Here is the perfect black color. The image on the screen is bright, saturated, and has no reference to the corners.

The company's developers noted that the image will now be 25% brighter, which will improve color rendition.

DiagonalPrice
55″up to 2.9 thousand dollars
65″up to 8.5 thousand dollars
77″up to 22.3 thousand dollars.

These truly have some of the best models in terms of hardware – 4K support, infinite contrast, 10-bit colors and HDR.

It should be said about the appearance of the TV. This is a truly chic design solution. Since it is a single-layer screen, which will surprise everyone with its thinness. Moreover, not everyone knows the image on the glass; the company also decided to stick to a seamless design.

Cinematic-level HDR imaging

LG's 2021 OLED and SUPER UHD TVs feature Cinema HDR, bringing a truly cinematic experience right into your home with support for Technicolor's Advanced HDR format. This was a logical continuation of the company’s traditions, which provided support for all major HDR standards from Dolby Vision to HDR10 and HLG. Images in HDR format undergo dynamic frame-by-frame processing using LG’s own algorithm – Enhanced Dynamic Tone.

“Our 2021 lineup of flagship OLED and SUPER UHD TVs represents the company's highest achievements in TV technology to date.

- notes Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment.

“LG remains at the forefront of the industry by offering viewers the best TV viewing experience using ThinQ® artificial intelligence technology and cutting-edge processors.”
